HORIZONS, A FAMILY FISCAL YEAR 2019
SERVICE ALLIANCE

Chief Executive Officer

MICHAEL BARNHART

Since its founding as Family Services 60 years ago, Horizons has worked to instill hope,
strengthen communities, and brighten futures by providing life-changing services to under-
served populations. It has been the support of our friends and neighbors that allows us to
accomplish so much as an agency. Our annual report highlights the impact that our services
have in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor. On behalf of our staff and clients, let me just
say thank you for your generosity over the last year. I look forward to doing this meaningful
work with you in 2020. Together we can change thousands of lives in eastern Iowa.

Board Chair

KARLA GOETTEL

I first became aware of Horizons and the important work they do in 2009. I had founded
“Flood Them With Love,” an all-volunteer organization to aid flood survivors. Then-CEO
Scott Jamieson offered to take us under the Horizons umbrella to make contributions to
FTWL tax deductible. Our organization exploded in size and we were able to help 350 flood
families, totaling 1,000 people. In addition, Horizons offered our families financial and
mental health counseling. I felt so indebted to Horizons that I eventually joined the board
and served as Board Chair.  I love Horizons, for the work they do to provide hope to our less
fortunate neighbors and for the wonderful, dedicated employees who work there!

Former Horizons Executive

LOIS BUNTZ

In 1996 I became Executive Director of Family Services.  Our core programs were Meals on
Wheels, Consumer Credit Counseling, Mental Health Counseling and the Survivors of
Homicide Victim’s program. We moved our offices twice in the next seven years and in 2003
launched the first capital campaign “Sharing the Bounty.”  The 1.3 million dollar campaign
helped purchase an existing warehouse facility, remodel it and build a state-of-the-art
kitchen. These changes enabled the agency to expand its Meals on Wheels program and
reach more home-bound seniors, add mental health counselors, and create new community-
based programs. After nine years I left to become the CEO of United Way of East Central
Iowa. Horizons, A Family Service Alliance has continued to grow and evolve, providing
essential and unique services to vulnerable children, individuals, and families.

Former Horizons Executive

BOB BUNTZ

Horizons, A Family Service Alliance, came about from the joining of Family Services and
Alternative Services in the spring of 2005. The purpose was to form an organization with the
capabilities of serving children, families, and individuals of all ages with far greater impact
than either could accomplish on its own. Both organizations were committed to
strengthening the human services community through this cooperation as well as those that
followed it. They were also aware of the need for efficiencies and collaborative use of
available resources at that time and into the future. Over the course of the next two years,
the blending of resources and services led to a system that served an increasing number of
clients more effectively.
