From the Rabbi’s Study

You may remember as I began my tenure here at Temple Mount Sinai I
made a commitment to try to sit with each and every member of the congregation. If
you are reading this, there’s about a 50% chance we’ve had an opportunity to have
that sit-down. This past month I hit the half-year mark. I’ve sat with so many
people, and met so many more in less formal seĴings like group gatherings and
Shabbat one g, that I’ve hit that awkward point of often being unsure if we’ve met
yet or not.

When I was geĴing started here, I sat together with the leadership of the
congregation to discuss our shared goals for this first year. Of primary concern was
meeting the congregation as quickly as possible, while allowing everyone who
wished the opportunity to meet me as well. My hope is that that has so far been
successful (but that’s for you to tell me!), even as it is an endeavor which will be ongoing. If we haven’t met
yet, please give me a call so that we can schedule some time to sit down.

As I got to meet people, I learned very quickly a couple of things. First, the roots of this
congregation are deep. I would venture to guess that there are not many temples around the country as old
as Temple Mount Sinai which have so many descendants from the founding families still around. At the
same time, a significant section of our congregation is made up of “new” families, those who themselves
moved to El Paso and have found a home here. Despite that, I have heard again and again how welcoming
this community is, how at home people feel here no maĴer their background. At the same time, I heard the

desire to connect more and more to one another. The notion that the temple is the
center of Jewish religious and social life seems to resonate. We wish to be a place of
support for one another, a part of our lives at every step from birth through death
and for each joy and challenge along the way.

A major initiative which comes from this message is our Caring Community
project. Once a month those who are homebound or of a certain age receive Shabbat
boxes created and delivered by a large cadre of volunteers so that those who are
loneliest know that we’re thinking of them. At the same time, the Caring
Community is organized to visit those in the hospital, to welcome new members
and to deliver a yahrzeit candle to those who are observing a first yahrzeit.
There is so much more we can do, and we are limited only by our own creativity and by the time
and energy of volunteers and staff. That being the case, it was clear that as I tackled the goal of evaluating
our current staff model, we have a need for someone who focuses on people. Someone who can bring us
together with those we may not have met before, and who can spend his or her energy on helping to make
this a place of a stronger and more connected community. So we began our search for a Membership and
Programming Coordinator. As I write this article, a small commiĴee is reviewing resumes, though I
wouldn’t be surprised if more up-to-date information is announced before or soon after this bulletin goes to
print.

From the Rabbi’s Study

(continued from page 1)
As all of this is taking place, I have strived to get the hang of everything at the temple so that we
can get into the groove of day-to-day programming and operations. We’ve started our second semester of
Religious School, adult education is taking place most weeks every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and
services and lifecycles are on-going as well. With regards to worship, I made the promise not to change
too much within my first year, but evaluation of what’s working and what isn’t continues.

There are two other on-going items that I’d like to share with you. First, Grace, Lori Gaman and I
are looking at the goals and mission of our Religious School. Within the next few weeks we will be pulling
together a group of lay leaders along with parents to evaluate and work on what must be, for any
successful Religious School, a constant process of reflection and imagining. What is clear to me as a
newcomer is that we have an amazing school with wonderful teachers and an inspired Director. Our kids
have a great time and they walk away each Sunday morning beĴer human beings and more
knowledgeable Jews.

Second, since I’ve arrived our Social Action/Social Justice work as a community has been largely
on hold. One of the questions I’ve tried to ask everyone that I’ve sat down with has been “What bothers or
frustrates you in our society, in our country, in our world?” Many of your answers have led to the work of
the Caring Community. At the same time, it is clear that we as Jews understand our responsibilities to the
broader, troubled world around us. Bringing together a group as large as we are around a single initiative
meant to bring healing to our world can be very tricky. As I mentioned in one of my sermons during the
High Holy Days, our politics and the perspectives are varied. We have to be careful to ensure that in
working to do kindness for the world, we are doing all we can to avoid ostracizing someone while living
up to the Prophetic call of our tradition. That being the case, if you have any thoughts on the direction
Temple Mount Sinai should take to bring about a more just society, please be in touch.

As you can see, things at our temple have been busy, and they’re not about to get any less so. We
have a lot to do, but everything is based on an amazingly firm foundation of history and community. This
is such a special and remarkable place. I hope you are as proud as I am to be a part of it all. If so, please let
me know how you’d like to be involved. And just in case you don’t really like reading these long articles,
allow me to recap the two items I would ask of you:

If we haven’t met yet, please give the temple a call so we can schedule a time to sit down!
If you have ideas regarding what Temple Mount Sinai should do as a community to help make the

world a beĴer place, please let me know.

SAVE THE DATE!!

We’re Proud to Announce...

It’s official! This past summer, with big changes taking place at Temple Mount
Sinai, Carlos Gamez was hired as Interim Music Director. We’re thrilled to let
everyone know that Carlos is now “just plain” Music Director. With him as a
permanent part-time staff member, our music program will continue to shape,
evolve and change to engage as many of us as possible through the coming
years. We know that Carlos is anything, but “plain!” His love of music is con-
tagious. He’s shown himself to be talented, energetic, and passionate. Mazel tov Carlos, and m azel tov
Temple Mount Sinai!

Many Thanks...

...to Mark Heins and the Greenery Restaurant. Mark graciously provides
Temple with our delicious challah every week for Kiddush. He also donated
the soup and challah rolls that were included in the Shabbat Boxes in January.
We really appreciate the Heins family and their continued support of Temple.

LeƩer from the President

Dear Temple Family,

Rabbi Zeidman and I have just returned from Chicago where we aĴended URJ’s
Shallat Retreat. This program is designed specifically for congregations who are
transitioning with a new rabbi. Yes, it was cold (freezing, actually)! Yes, it was fun!
Yes, we learned a lot! And, yes, Temple Mount Sinai is transitioning beautifully!
Below are some of the key “take-away moments” from our time together:

When we arrived, it was snowing and 9 degrees. When we departed, it was snowing
and just as cold. Rabbi Zeidman was beginning to wonder whether our claims of
beautiful winter weather were really true having experienced a couple of “chilly”
days in El Paso in December. Needless to say, we both have a renewed sense of
appreciation for how wonderful it can be in El Paso and are glad to be back to our crystal blue skies and 60-degree
weather.

Whenever you have an opportunity to network with colleagues and associates (now friends) from across the country
and Canada, it’s fun! We were joined by approximately 20 other congregational leaders and new rabbis who have all
just gone through their first six months together like us. We spent valuable time together learning about each other,
from each other, and sharing ideas. Rabbi Bellush and her president were among the aĴendees – she is doing great
and sends her best to all of you!

The meat of the program focused on various workshops dealing with transition management, sacred partnership
development, and visioning and goal-seĴing. We learned that there are different stages congregations go through
when transitioning with a new rabbi. This process can take 12 to 18 months for some. It was comforting to realize
that Temple Mount Sinai has been doing everything just right in this regard. Our m ifgashim events, transition team
formation, focused observation on different areas of our operations, open dialogue with the congregation, and
patience in not moving too quickly has enabled us to move through the transition process more smoothly than most.
In fact, we are in the “New Beginnings” stage already – a time where our congregation has pulled together, feels
comfortable, and is eagerly anticipating the new chapter that lies ahead for us as a community.

A great deal of time was devoted to allowing the Presidents and Rabbis private time to evaluate, discuss and dream
together. Although our sacred partnership was already strong, I believe I speak for both of us when I say we added
yet another dimension to our relationship during the Shallat Retreat. Too often, we get caught up in the daily grind
to find the time to evaluate where we’ve been, what we’ve done, and where we want to go. We had some very
meaningful, frank, and thoughtful conversations about how to best work together to build upon the incredible
foundation that is Temple Mount Sinai.

If I could assign ourselves a grade for how Temple is progressing, it would be an A+! Our super fantastic Rabbi, our
wonderful staff, our forward-thinking leadership team, our supportive volunteers, and our dedicated and caring
membership – all working together -- have allowed us to achieve such high marks.

Our #1 take-away lesson is how very fortunate and blessed we are as a congregation. Rabbi Zeidman and I thank
you for giving us the opportunity to aĴend the Shallat Retreat and look forward to a bright future as we grow
together in the coming years.

Fondly,

Lori Gaman
President

Caring Community - Shabbat Box Project and More!

Our Caring Community volunteers have been very busy showing
Temple’s care and support for our membership! Our wonderful
group of volunteers continue to prepare, package and deliver
Shabbat Boxes each month to some of our older members and those
in need of some extra tender loving care.

Temple has received many gracious cards and donations in
appreciation of this wonderful new project. We are currently
working on the boxes to be delivered on Friday, February 5.

The Caring Community commiĴee is providing support for our congregation in many other ways
as well:

• Delivering welcome baskets to new members of Temple

• Visiting members who are in the hospital

• Visiting those who are ill at home and/or need some extra aĴention

• Baking and/or delivering cakes for the families of a member who has passed away

• Providing a candle to the family of someone who is observing a yahrĵeit

If you have any questions, or would like to participate in our Caring Community, please contact
Susan Jaffee at susanjaff[email protected].
