GROWTH+ Winter 2015 , Prof. Achim Menges
The following project was developed using Grasshoper within
the scope of an algorithmic design course. The script enab-
le the user to set the rules and controls for a growing process. The
outcome is not foreseeable in the beginning but during the pro-
cess the parameters can be changed and influence the gro-
wing process in a desirable way and be used for different needs.

SARAJEVO A new landmark for Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzogovina
HIGHRISE
Background The site of this project is located in the district
„Marin Dvor“ in the city center of Sarajevo. The task was
to develop a new urban concept which would upgrade
the entire city center. This concept should include an
high-rise which will be planned in detail with the focus
on the load-bearing structure and the facade‘s design.
Concept In an effort to serve as a new district‘s identity and
bring density to the post-war rehabilitated area, the high-
rise will feature space for the community on its open floor
plate, anchored by high-end retail and dining. This ensures
a good integration of the high-rise into the neighborhood
and the surroundings. On the urban planning level, the
attractivity of the district will be increased by creating new
plazas and green areas which will attract new residents.

INTERNSHIP Behnisch Architekten, Boston , Mar - Sep 2015
During my internship in Boston I had the opportunity to apply
the acquired knowledge from school in practice. In the office I
was a team member during the Schematic Design phase of the
Harvard University Science and Engineering Complex. My main
task was to develop the building envelope, which plays a crucial
role in the energy performance and occupant comfort in the
building. The process demanded high parametric design skills.
Using Grasshopper for Rhino I was able to design and Street-view
construct the building envelope in several studies and stages.
I also coordinated with different professional consultants and
created models, with which structural and financial decisions
could be made. With the help of my 3D visualizations the
office was able to clarify things more quickly and efficient
with the client and to continue develeping the design.

THE DREAM A museum for mentally challenged artists, Stuttgart
OF FLYING
Background The building offers exhibition rooms and working
spaces for mentally challenged artists and was inspired by the dream
of Gustav Mesmer (one of the artist) to develop an aircraft, which is
operated only by muscle power, with the ability to fly from hill to hill.
Concept Visitors can experience the feeling of flying, by walking street-view
across a bridge from one exhibition room to the other. On
their way, they fly over the two main rooms of the building:
the lobby and the artists studio. The visitors begin their tour
at the spiral staircase in the lobby, which leads them to the
exhibition rooms. Handicapped people can use the elevators,
which are located in every exhibition tower. The outer side
of each elevator is made entirely out of glass. This allows
everybody to experience the feeling of flying here as well.

COURTYARD A new interpetation to the courtyard house typology, Tunis, Tunisia
HOUSE
Background In consequence of the lack of living space in
Tunis, a new interpretation of the traditional courtyard house
was required. The courtyard house in the arab city is a result
of two main factors: the climate and social relationships.
Concept The complex offers three units and a restaurant. Each unit
has two classical courtyards with different purposes and usage. In
order to minimize the circulation area, a bridge connects the parts of
the house on the second floor. This space operate as a courtyard in
winter and absorbs the sun rays penetrate through the shades. The
larger courtyard in the unit offers a place to relax near water and
plants. On the contrary the smaller courtyard is planned for housework
and has a fireplace for heating and cooking (organic vs. mineral).

School in Jaffa playgrounds
Background The main goal of the project was to create a building
that would function as a school but also as a culture and social
center. The design process was influenced deeply by the ongoing
conflikt between Jews and Arabs in Israel and had its focus on
integrating the campus in the urban context. The new building aspires
to fulfill the educational and social vision of „Hand in Hand“ - the
organization that operates three more bilingual schools in Israel
beside that - and was designed according to new pedagogic paradigms.
Concept The school functions like a small city with public, half public and
private zones and is divided into clusters that share a main courtyard. Each
cluster operates like a small school and the teaching-staff is able to design
their program with great flexibility. The public zones are accesible directly
from the street and can be utilized around the clock for public activities.
