Along with swimming, reading is another way

that Laura loves to relax and unwind. So what

does she like to read?

“I like really good stories. I’m easily swayed

by bestsellers lists because I feel if this amount of

people love this book well there’ll be something

in it for me. I’m sort of into the chilling, thriller

genre more than any other one, if I was given an

option. I don’t know why I would consider that

light reading because I’m a complete scaredy

cat. I’m a total wuss, but that’s the kind of thing I

like,” she laughs.

A quick Google on Laura Woods is a little

confusing. You see the Laura we know, but then

you see another Laura, also a presenter. I ask her

if she ever gets confused with Sky’s Laura Woods

and our Laura laughs.

“That’s such a good question! It’s such a funny

one as well. By all accounts she seems to be really

nice. We’ve had reason to be in touch with each

other over the last couple of years.

“I will always see a surge in people engaging

with me online after a darts championship. I

may have had a show on that day as well and I

get all these really nice messages saying, ‘Oh

well done’ and I say ‘Thank you!’ and then I

realise they’re in the UK – none of them are

“I actually showed my sons the other Laura

obviously there’s loads of people with the same

name around, but this girl happens to do a

similar job to me in England,’ and I showed my

sons the photo and my eight-year-old said, ‘Oh I

prefer that Laura Woods!’. I had to laugh.”

On that note, we start to finish our chat and

I ask Laura one last question before I let her go:

who would she choose to play her in a film about

her life?

“Oh for God’s sake!” she laughs. “Hopefully

This is one of the best literary o erings so far this
year, focusing on how an unexpected death upsets
the equilibrium of two 50-something couples who
met in their 20s and still have strong connections.
When one of the husbands – who was the pivotal force in the
foursome – dies suddenly, it’s le to the other three to pick up
the pieces, which they don’t do very well.

Inspired by true stories from a devastating and little-
known era in Japanese and American History, The
Woman In The White Kimono illuminates a searing
portrait of one woman torn between her culture and her heart,
and another woman on a journey to discover the true meaning of
home. It’s inspired by the true story of Ana Johns’ father, who
as an American US Navy soldier in the 1950s fell in love with a
Japanese girl.

Platform Seven

by Louise Doughty (Faber & Faber)
This is a late-summer read, as it’s not out till the
end of August, but the hotly-anticipated novel from
the bestselling author of Apple Tree Yard is worth
waiting for. Not your average spine-tingler, it’s
eerie and unusual, as it is narrated by the ghost of a woman who
came to a sticky end at the eponymous platform.
