Beauty goes retro as eighties influences take hold:
think thick flicks in neon brights and structural strokes
of blush offset by a barely-there base. “It’s such
an exciting time for makeup, it’s about expression,
original beauty,” says lead makeup artist on our shoot
Attracta Courtney. “It’s eighties but in a very modern
way.” Hair is choppy and unstructured, a contrast to
the precise lines on eyes and cheeks. “The hair was
very important, to keep it mainstream. The key trends
were a pony with a low side parting, and a boyish bob
while still revealing the beautiful girl beneath. It’s very
playful, it’s social media beauty.”

boyish and most importantly
au natural. “Brows are almost
secondary this season; when
you are wearing such strong
colours on the eye, you don’t
want them to compete. It’s
about being natural and
groomed.”

Blush

From Jill Stuart and Wunderkind to Anna
Sui and Vivetta, pink reigned supreme
across the catwalks. A move on from
strobing and contouring, Courtney created
a structural slash across cheeks that can
be easily translated to an off-runway look.
“It’s a clean ,fresh line in beauty. There’s
a softness to it; take away the line and
there’s a wearability to it.” A strawberry
wash of colour on the lids prevented
colour overload. “A simple accent of
colour in a different shape makes such a
big statement, it’s language, it’s thinking
outside the box.”

shades. “The pastels bring in the
softness of femininity.” Shapes

from previous season’s squovals

Two tone eyes

“Are you prepared to step over
the line? This look is about colour
clashing splashes of eighties
inspiration, it’s about the rave
culture, about strong pops bold
enough to be seen under the club
lights.” Keep eyeshadow bright
and precise and double up with
contrasting floating eyeliner for a
more-is-more effect.
