SPEAKING

PREPARATION FOR SPEAKING

Taking turns in a discussion

A discussion is an interactive task – speakers take turns when they speak. It is
important to stay on the topic and show when you agree and disagree with other
people’s opinions. Sometimes, you may want to interrupt someone. You should
do this in a polite way.

1 Look at this discussion. Circle the best answers.

A: Thanks to social-networking sites, you can keep in touch with hundreds
of people all around the world. What do you think?

B: (1) I’m sorry to interrupt / I see your point, but how well do you really
know these people? It’s not like seeing someone in real life.

A: (2) I agree / You may be right but in the modern world, people live far
apart and it’s often difficult to keep in touch. For example, I went to
school in another country and now all my school friends live hundreds
of kilometres away from me.

B: (3) Yes I understand but / You misunderstood my point are these
people really important in your life? Of course, you have friends
who you meet every day in real life. (4) But what about /
I completely disagree people who have 500 or 1,000 ‘friends’ on their
site? You can’t possibly know all of them. And …

A: OK yes, (5) I see your point / I’m sorry to interrupt, but I only have
about 200 friends. I can keep in touch with them. It doesn’t take a lot
of time because I can see their updates on my phone all the time.

B: (6) I disagree / I understand. I don’t think you can really do that. We
really only have about 20 or 30 friends, in real life.

2 Match phrases from Exercise 1 to the strategies (a–d) below. Sometimes
there is more than one possible answer.

a interrupting I’m sorry to interrupt.
b introducing a new point
c disagreeing
d showing you respect another opinion
