Believe in a Better Tomorrow Village

For some, those words are so easy to read. Then there are
others who cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. For
those who knock on Eva’s doors for a hot meal, a pillow to lay
their head on, or a chance to rebuild their life after substance
use, a better tomorrow may not look so easy to grasp.

For nearly 40 years, Eva’s Village has helped build better tomorrows for thousands
of men, women, and children who may not have felt any hope.

In the past few months, we’ve begun to return to pre-COVID numbers. Watching
our programs and services expand is adding new life around Eva’s Village. Our
clients are returning to work, and our Workforce Development Team has been
helping other clients prepare for employment. Many of the mothers in our Hope
Residence have newborn children who now have a chance of having a better life.
Better tomorrows are happening all around Eva’s Village, and we are not letting
anyone’s hand go until we know they can stand on their own two feet.

Together, we can help build better tomorrows for all.

May God bless all of you and your families,

Eva’s Mission Has Never Been More Urgent

Dear Friends,
It is an honor to welcome you this evening as we gather to acknowledge the

extraordinary work, dedicated staff, and devoted partners of Eva’s Village, and to
share some of the innovative, life-transforming initiatives taking place in Paterson.

Eva’s Village is a thought-leader in the fight against homelessness, hunger
and addiction. We not only provide survival-level resources to men, women and
children, but we also go into the most challenged parts of our community to make
connections and offer practical solutions. Our highly-trained and devoted staff build
name-knowing relationships within our local community and learn their stories. We
recognize and assist all those who desperately long for safe and affordable housing,
sustainable income, and stable lives. We are the advocates that break down the
barriers and help them to find the path toward happier, healthier, and financially
secure lives.

Despite the pandemic, our staff and our partners worked tirelessly and seemingly
effortlessly to continue services and support for everyone who came to us in
need. We assisted men and women seeking food, shelter, supportive housing,
or substance use treatment. We provided quality childcare for women in our
residential substance use program to remove the threat of losing custody while in
recovery. We walked with program graduates as they navigated the challenges of
securing independent housing. And we did it with the help of our partners.

As we celebrate 39 years of service, we do so mindful of the many contributions
others offered to make the life-changing work at Eva’s possible. Thank you for your
presence and partnership, and for being a part of the future of Eva’s Village.

Dear Friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Eva’s Village as you celebrate your
39th Anniversary Gala. Your commitment over the years for our friends and neighbors in need
have tremendously impacted the Ninth Congressional District. I am so thankful for all your hard
work.

For 39 years, Eva’s Village has brought hope and healing to the vulnerable and
underserved members of our community. Over the past year, we have faced one of our most
challenging times as a nation. I know each of you at Eva’s Village had to go above and beyond
to provide good service, and I am so appreciative. As you celebrate tonight, reflect on all the
people you have helped over the past 39 years. They will never forget how Eva’s Village was a
force for good in their life. Your wide array of programs addressing basic needs of food and
shelter as well as issues around addiction and mental illness have provided thousands of
individuals with a brighter future and a sense of hope. I commend your community of dedicated
professionals and caring volunteers, who have provided comprehensive care for all. I am proud
to call Eva’s Village a true friend of the Ninth Congressional District. May you continue for
many years to come!

On behalf of the 9th Congressional District, I would like to congratulate Eva’s Village
once again as it celebrates its accomplishments in our community. As your Representative in
Congress, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if I may be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Bill Pascrell, Jr.

Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney

Where Hope Begins Award

Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney is a native of Queens,
N.Y. He attended Cathedral Prep from 1984 to
1988 and was an outstanding baseball player for
the high school seminary team. He was inducted
into Prep’s Hall of Fame in 2013. After high school
graduation, Bishop Sweeney entered Cathedral
Seminary House of Formation in Douglaston and
studied at St. John’s University. He then entered
the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in
Huntington, N.Y. and received a M.Div. in Theology.

On June 28, 1997, Bishop Sweeney was ordained
a priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn by Bishop Thomas Daily. In 2004, Bishop
Sweeney was named by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn as the Vocation
Director. During his time as Vocation Director, which lasted until 2010, he also
served as the first Director of the St. Pope John Paul II House of Discernment.

On April 15, 2020, Pope Francis named him to be the
eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson. On July 1, 2020 in
the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, Cardinal
Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R., Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark,
ordained him to the Order of Bishops and installed Bishop
Sweeney as the Bishop of Paterson.

We are so lucky to have Bishop Sweeney in the Diocese of
Paterson. An inspiration to us all, we congratulate him on
this honor.

Our Honorees

St. Joseph’s Health
Frontline Workers

The Community Service Award

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the
frontline workers at St. Joseph’s Health
dedicated themselves to treating and healing
our community. But, over the past 18 months,
the dedication and commitment displayed by St. Joseph’s
frontline team was unwavering and nothing short of remarkable. As one of the
hardest hit communities in New Jersey, the residents of Paterson and neighboring
cities relied on these frontline workers more than ever to take care of them and
their loved ones. St. Joseph’s and the frontline team served as a beacon of hope
during our darkest time.

We are so fortunate to have St. Joseph’s Health right in our back yard. They have
been and continue to be such an important partner in caring for the population that
we serve. We are especially proud of partnering with them to offer recovery support
and treatment to survivors of opioid overdose before they leave the emergency
room through the Opioid Overdose Recovery Program.

During the height of the pandemic, St. Joseph’s Health partnered with us to offer a
free on-site vaccination clinic here at Eva’s. This effort helped vaccinate hundreds of
our at-risk neighbors as well as Eva’s staff.

Thank you, St. Joseph’s Health, for all that you do!
Together, we are building better tomorrows for so many.

Our Honorees

Eva’s Village
Frontline Workers

The Monsignor Puma Award

The transformations that make it possible for
individuals struggling with hunger, homelessness,
and addiction to rebuild their lives at Eva’s Village
would not be possible without the dedication
of our frontline workers. Many of the issues our clients face
were exacerbated by the pandemic. The individuals who knocked on our doors
received the help they needed to survive during the most difficult of times,
thanks to the dedication of our staff.

During the height of the pandemic, many of the administrative staff members
at Eva’s became frontline workers because the need was so great. We are so
proud of everyone at Eva’s who stayed the course during a very tumultuous and
unpredictable time. They so selflessly gave of themselves to be sure others were
safe and receiving the services they needed. They were truly doing God’s work.
We applaud their dedication and sacrifice.

The generosity of our donors has allowed our important work to continue,
especially during this pandemic. All of these individuals, staff, clients, volunteers
and donors, are often behind the scenes, doing the hard work that make miracles
happen, whether they are supporting our programs, working
with clients or making progress towards goals to build long-
term recovery and make a fresh start.

Building a Better Tomorrow

Helping Our Most Vulnerable Neighbors
Lead Healthy, Independent Lives

For nearly 40 years, Eva’s Village has been a thought leader on the
implementation and best practices to ensure that Paterson community
members experiencing food insecurity, housing insecurity, substance use
disorders and unemployment have the tools they need to overcome these
barriers to healthy, stable, and financially secure lives.

Established in 1982 by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma as a soup kitchen providing
sustenance with dignity along with mental and physical health evaluations
and referrals, Eva’s Village has evolved into one of the most effective anti-
poverty nonprofit organizations in New Jersey.

Eva’s operates a continuum of services, offering food, emergency shelter,
treatment for substance use, childcare to mothers in our treatment
program, connections to peer support and treatment to emergency room
overdose patients, sidewalk outreach, and supportive housing to our
vulnerable neighbors.

With our holistic behavioral health and supportive social service programs
model, professional staff, 3,000 committed volunteers, and dedicated
Board of Directors, Eva’s Village helps more than 5,000 of New Jersey’s most
marginalized and underserved individuals and families break cycles of
poverty, homelessness, and addiction each year.

Our model is unique. Our results are real. Our success is measured one life
at a time. Our mission has never been more urgent. Thank you for being a
part of the future of Eva’s Village!
