6 Ways to Save
Energy

Ways to Save Electric Energy
We do not have to be in the dark to save the electric energy.

Nor do we have to stop using electrical appliances.
What we have to do is

Using electricity efficiently
depending on our needs.

Let us educate ourselves to achieve that.

Education for Sustainable Development 1

Why should we
conserve energy?

With the use of fossil fuels for combustion, the human

energy storey, which began with gaining control of fire, was thrust
into a new dimension. As a result, fossil fuels, which are crucial to
communal existence, have become the driving force behind global
political and economic activities. As things currently stand, the fossil
fuel that has been accumulated as a consequence of natural
processes over millennia is set to be exhausted in this century. That
can be a powerful enough force to spell the end of human
civilisation.

Furthermore, the environmental difficulties created by global
warming caused by the emission of greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere as a result of the indiscriminate use of fossil fuels would
worsen in the coming decades. Many living creatures, including
humans, face extinction if global temperatures rise by 2°C because
they are unable to withstand environmental calamities and heat.

Using energy wisely is critical as a solution to the aforementioned
global concerns and as a method of saving our energy. This E-book
will provide you the information you need to get started.

Ironing clothes

The kerosene lamp went out of use and electric lamps came in when a house
was supplied with electricity and the coconut-shell iron went out of use and the
electric iron came in, in the same way.

Selecting an efficient electric iron:

There are three types of electric irons in the market.

1) Normal electric irons - 750 W – 1000 W
2) Spray irons - 750 W – 1200 W
3) Steam irons - 1200 W – 2400 W

3 Education for Sustainable Development

For the efficiency of the iron:

Ironing clothes takes 20 – 30 minutes every day in a house with individuals
going to work and children going to school. As a result, ironing adds 8 – 24
units to the power cost.

Despite their high wattage, steam irons are the most efficient of the three types
of irons. . As a result, this type of iron is better suited for larger families that
require significant ironing.

Because the steam may be directed on the fabric being ironed, areas with more
wrinkles may be ironed with a single stroke. As a result, the time spent ironing
is 50% less than with a standard iron.

Even though a standard iron has a lower wattage, it takes longer to heat up and
iron garments and consumes more power when compared to other types of
irons.

Making plans to decrease ironing time is critical for energy savings before
beginning to iron garments. So, before you begin ironing clothing, prepare the
hooks on which the garments will be hung. Separate the clothing that must be
ironed and those that just require mild ironing.

• Clean the bottom plate of the iron by ironing a raw banana leaf.
• Use distilled water for steam irons.
• Follow manufacturers’ instructions to prevent steam exit holes from

blocking up.
• Clean steam exit holes with some cotton often.

Ironing clothes methodically:

• Before ironing, grade clothing according to thickness.
• Start ironing with thicker material and finish up by ironing thinner

cloths. Reduce the temperature control of the iron accordingly.
• Disconnect the iron before ironing the last few pieces.
• When placing the iron aside during ironing, keep the bottom plate of

the iron vertically.
• Get used to ironing clothes once a week especially if a normal iron is

used.
• When ironing, place a thin aluminum foil under the table cover,

enabling the ironing of both sides of the garment ironed.

Fan Installation and

Control

From the data, the percentage of energy consumption of electrical appliances used in
Malaysia is 10%. Although it is low but very important to save energy consumption

That’s the concept on how to reduce energy when using
a fan such as:

❑ Control the fan speed according to current weather
❑ Unplug the switch of fan after using it
❑ Use fan which consists 4 stars and above for saving more electricity

consumption

5 Education for Sustainable Development

Buy electrical that can
reduce electricity
consumption

❑ If we are still using a refrigerator that is 10 years old or older, switch to the latest
refrigerator. This is because most electrical appliances nowadays are more energy
efficient. Buy electrical appliances that have a high Energy Star rating.

Example : Air conditioning – there is 5 star sticker

❑ 5 Star

More stars available
more save electricity
consumption.

❑4 Star

Buying electronic
with rating sticker can
be read as saver for
electricity.

Washing Machine

How to reduce energy when using a washing machine such as:

➢ Use more loads- less
power is use and
remember your washer
will use about the same
amount of energy no
matter the size of the load,
so fill it up every time you
use it.

➢ Natural dryer- Develop a
habit to use dryers only

when sun is not out or there
is urgent need to dry your

clothes.

➢ Turn off power supply-

On standby mode your

washing machine will

consume power even
though it’s small amount.

Education for Sustainable Development
❖ How to reduce energy when using a
washing machine such as:

➢ Pre-soak stains- This
will give better
cleaning experience,
reduce the number of
washing cycle and
save some energy.

➢ Reduce number of
cycle- reduce machine
usage and also the
electric bill

➢ Modern machines-
has double energy
saving compare to the
old machine.

Turn Off The
Switch & Unplug

An efficient electric :

❑ Make sure the switch is off & the plug is remove when electrical
equipment is in use. The plug needs to be removed and not just turn
off the switch because there is still electrical energy flowing.

❑ Eg : Television, oven, lamp, aircond, laptop, washing machine, fan
and etc.

❑ Please turn off the light switch before leaving the house before bed
and during the day.

Change The Light

What’s an led?

❑ LEDS (or light-emitting diodes) are small sources of light that work when
the movement from electrons illuminate semiconductor material. This
longer lasting technology is usually found in traffic lights and exit signs, but
now consumers can find options like LED light bulbs and even Christmas
lights. Companies like GE are working to make LED technology more
affordable and practical for homes. The Department of Energy estimates
that rapid adoption of LED lighting in the U.S. over the next 20 years can
reduce lighting electricity demand by 33% by 2027.

Education for Sustainable Development 10

Example : Incandescent bulbs

Incandescent bulbs create
light by passing

electricity through a
metal filament until it
becomes so hot that it
glows. Incandescent
bulbs release 90% of
their energy as heat.

In a CFL, an electric
current is driven through
a tube containing gasses.
This reaction produces
ultraviolet light that gets
transformed into visible
light by the fluorescent
coating (called phosphor)
on the inside of the tube.

LED lighting products use light

emitting diodes to produce light

very efficiently. The movement

of electrons through a

semiconductor material

illuminates the tiny light sources

we call LEDs. A small amount

of heat is released backwards

into a heat sink. In a well-

designed product, LEDs are

basically cool to the touch.

11 Education for Sustainable Development

❑ Reduced Energy ❑ Longer Life
Costs
The life of other lighting
LED lighting can sources average
save you up to 80% between 1,000-20,000
on your existing hours. LED ighting has
energy bill. Plus, a 50,000 hour life. This
you may qualify for means lower
an Energy Rebate. maintenance and
relamping costs.

ADVANTAGES
USING LED
BULBS:

❑ Enviromental Advantage

LED lighting is mercury
free and generates less heat.
Ideal for sustainability and
Green solutions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, by following the given steps,
we can save on the use of electricity in
Malaysia. The parties mentioned should
also take a place to help the community in
the way that has been told in this book. We
hope that the community can fulfill its
responsibilities by adhering to the measures
to save the use of electrical goods properly
and perfectly. Ultimately, the use of good
electrical goods can maintain the beauty of
the environment in our daily lives.
