Prophase
During prophase DNA and proteins contained in the nucleus, known as chromatin,
condenses.
Metaphase
During this stage, the nucleus disappears and the chromosomes appear in the
cytoplasm of the cell.
Anaphase
During anaphase, each pair of chromosomes is separated into two identical,
independent chromosomes.
Telophase
During telophase, a nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to
separate the nuclear DNA from the cytoplasm.
