Botanical Garden Work: The Uses of Herbs
(Cassumunar ginger, Bengal root, known locally as "Plai" in Thai)
Scientific name: Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.
Family name: ZINGIBERACEAE
Characteristics:
The outer colour of Plai is yellowish brown, with inner colour of greenish yellow. For
fresh rhizome, Plai possesses succulent texture. Its taste is found to be intensely hot and
unpleasant with unique scent. For freshly aged main stem, Plai appears to be dried out with
mild hot taste.
Medicinal Uses:
Plai is used medicinally in relieving pain, bruise, ankle pain, abdominal bloating, and
muscle pain and myositis (ก ล ้ า ม เ น ื ้ อ อ ั ก เ ส บ ) . Plai is also proved to be natural source of
antioxidant herb that helps to relieve the pain in stomach due to Peptic Ulcer disease (โ ร ค
แผลในกระเพาะอาหาร).
Benefits of Plai:
Plai rhizome at the age of over 2 years can be processed into essential oil to produce
Plai oil balm.
Recipe and Method of Making Plai Oil Balm for 3 Liters 400 g.
1. Soft Paraffin 200 g.
2. Hard Paraffin 800 g.
3. Bee wax 500 g.
4. Cetyl alcohol 400 g.
5. Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum camphora) การบูร 140 g.
6. Menthol 400 ml.
7. Methyl salicylate or Wintergreen oil (น้ำมันระกำ) 200 ml.
8. Eucalyptus 50 cc.
9. Plai extract

Methods:
1. Mix the ingredients No. 1-8 in the stainless pot and put on fire until well melted.
2. Add Plai extract into the said mixture and stir well before turning off the gas.
3. Store the cooked mixture in the glass jar. Leave it cool and close the lid. Plai oil
balm can be used to relieve the muscle pain including the pain from insect bites.
