10 Creature Companion | NOVEMBER 2023 • VOL. XVI • ISSUE 11 • NOIDA Industry Connect G one are the days when a family picture just had 3 generations perched on high chairs staring at a tripod camera. The world today puts up collages of happy parents holding onto their giggling kids and face licking pets. Yes, a pet today is a must. As this new world is waking up to the benefi ts of pet parenting on their mental and physical health, pets are also an increasing demand from the kids who seek solace and company when their parents are away. But with all this love, also comes the responsibility of raising your pets well and giving them the nutrition that they deserve. Walking down the dog food aisle at your local grocery store or pet store may feel overwhelming with so many choices. Pet owners, breeders, veterinarians, store employees, and the general public all have different opinions on what type of food is best for dogs. Despite the wide variety of recommendations, there are ways to objectively evaluate the best dog food diet for your pet at home. But food is no “one size fi ts all”, Your dog’s best food will depend on its unique needs, most importantly their life stage, weight, and known medical conditions. Dogs have different nutritional requirements depending on their age or life stage, and pet foods are generally formulated to meet the distinct needs of three groups: puppies, adult or maintenance and senior care. Some foods are formulated for “all life stages,” which means they can be fed to any pet. In order to make this claim, the food must meet the minimum requirements for growth and reproduction. This means that an “all life stage” food will have more calories and nutrients than what is needed for a healthy adult pet. While this is not necessarily harmful, it may lead to excess weight gain. Many veterinarians recommend choosing a food labelled for your pet’s specifi c life stage. Puppies need more calories, fat and protein than adult dogs; Puppy diets also contain higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals, like calcium and phosphorous, to support tissue growth and development until they reach maturity around 12 months old. It’s also best recommended for pregnant or lactating mother dogs to meet the enhanced needs of a mother dog. Your veterinarian may recommend switching a pregnant dog onto a puppy diet halfway through gestation until the puppies are weaned. Adult canines (four to eight years of age) should be fed a maintenance diet that helps them sustain a healthy weight and adequate energy levels. Compared to puppy food, the formulas have fewer calories, moderate amounts of most nutrients, and some additives that make dogs feel full upon eating. You may see some types of high-performance food geared toward active dogs between the ages of one and three. These diets are formulated to fuel the increased energy levels in young adults and athletic breeds with a unique blend of protein and fat. Caring for your senior dog should include a carefully chosen diet based on their specifi c health needs, such as the prevention or treatment of chronic disease. These formulas are designed to improve the immune system and may include specialty ingredients like glucosamine for dogs with arthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight is of utmost importance to your dog’s health. With this in mind, you should pay attention to the calories and feeding directions on the label. Your veterinarian can help you determine what an ideal weight and calorie target are for your pet. And let’s not forget the medical conditions while discussing this. If your dog has any medical conditions, including urinary stones, allergies, intestinal disease, or kidney issues you should consult with your veterinarian about the best dog food choice, as they may recommend a prescription diet. These diets are specially formulated by veterinary nutritionists to meet the unique nutritional needs of pets with specifi c disease conditions and studied in these patients. Your vet will advise you on which diet is best for your pet and whether or not the food is safe for all the canines in your home. Even if your pet doesn’t have a diagnosed medical condition, you can always discuss vet-recommended dog food at your pet’s annual preventive care examination. Note that not all formulas are created equal, and it’s essential that the product you choose is nutritionally complete and balanced to satisfy your pet's needs. It’s important to be cautious and take sanitary steps when serving raw food because the risk of bacterial contamination is very high. Simple steps can create an immunity shield around your pet, enhancing its life! Radha Sharma- Doctor, my golden retriever is five and a half years old and is very healthy and active. Recently, he has been unable to get up or sit and he's gone weak on his hind legs. What could be the reason for him to get spine problems at early age? Dr.Anand- Usually, at 5 years its highly unlikely that degenerative changes of the spine start but do get an x ray done of the spine to see any disc changes or degenerative changes. See if while getting up or playing, if he had any kind of exposure to any furniture being hit on the spinal area specially the lower spine. Also, get the Vitamin D levels checked. Mohit Verma- Doctor, I adopted a 5 year old dog recently who has never had any vaccinations before. Is it okay now to starts vaccines from beginning? Dr.Anand- You start afresh with vaccinations with first year, all doses being given as primary and booster to make minimum levels of antibodies in the system. Thereafter, once yearly boosters shall be sufficient. Samarth Khurana- Doctor, My female dog got spayed on recently. Although, my dog is super fit, she can jump and do everything like before, the stitches are still there. It is almost three weeks now, what could be the issue? Dr. Anand- Please ask the operating surgeon whether he had put absorbable sutures or non absorbable sutures on the skin. Aborbable sutures can take up to 4 weeks to dissolve if put over the skin and upto 3 weeks if put sub cuticular(under the skin) . Absorbable sutures, if they have applied they need to be cut now. Josephine Simon- Doctor, My 4+ year old male cat (not neutered) used to be very enthusiastic about food. But since the last two months, he has been being picky about food. He doesn't prefer dry food (MeO) and if given dry food, he will either eat it very slowly or just eat a bit and avoid the rest. He eats his wet food (Whiskas) in one go, but I have to sit with him, talk with him, and motivate him to finish it. I feed him 4 times a day. What could be the problem? Dr.Anand- Your cat’s issue seems to be more behaviour and environment related than medical. Still, get the liver values checked once and as far as environment is concerned, please check if there was a change in his schedule or environment from last few weeks. Sexual anxiety can also lead to such behaviour. Do think about getting the cat neutered as soon as possible. Anya Kapoor- Doctor, my semi-breed Persian cat has an acidic stomach. He is not sleeping and is puking a lot. I am giving him thyroid medicine. What is the problem here? Dr. Anand- Please review the diet being given to the semi persian cat. Also, get an x ray done for presence of any hair balls or food balls. Do review the level of T4 in her blood and thyroid medicine dosage also by the vet. Before selecting any breed, you have to take into consideration factors such as your lifestyle and environment. To truly connect with our feline friends, it's essential to delve into the intricate world of cat behaviour and body language. This article explores recent studies on cat behaviours and body language and sheds light on how cats understand us. Understanding Cat Behaviour Tail Talk: A cat's tail is a key indicator of its mood. However, for those who share their lives with pets, this joy can quickly turn into a nightmare. The Pet Panic During Diwali: Fireworks are a quintessential part of Diwali celebrations, but their loud explosions can have a signifi cant impact on our furry companions. The sound of crackers and fi reworks can be terrifying for pets, as their sensitive ears perceive these noises as thunderous roars, causing them to experience extreme stress and anxiety. The stress caused by fireworks doesn't just stop at mere discomfort; it can have profound effects on a pet's nervous system. Protecting Your Pets During Diwali While the fi reworks may not come to a halt, there are measures you can take to ensure your pets remain safe and comfortable during Diwali: 1. Create a Safe Haven: Designate a quiet and comfortable space within your home where your pet can retreat to when the fi reworks start. Ensure this area is equipped with their favorite toys, bedding, and water. 2. Close the Doors and Windows: Keep your doors and windows closed to minimize the noise from the fi reworks. This will help reduce the intensity of the sound inside your home. 3. Mask the Noise: Play soft and soothing music or use white noise machines to drown out the sounds of the fi reworks. This can help calm your pet's nerves. 4. Keep Them Inside: During the Diwali festivities, it's best to keep your pet indoors. If you must take them outside for a walk, ensure they are on a leash, as sudden loud noises can cause them to bolt in fear.
