Reflective Essay

I have gained a lot of knowledge and values from the adjunct certification program. In the
beginning of the session when objective was not cleared, teacher helped and encouraged not me
only to every student individually. We are involved more in active learning that is higher order
thinking (analysis, synthesis, evaluation) than listening. This ACP course promotes students
„interest in the subject and encourage their participation. In this program, BOPPPS was highly
dominated tool which we have learned to apply in our classes. BOPPPS includes the following
elements that are Bridge, Objective, Pre-Assessment, Participatory Learning, Post-Assessment
and Summary. BOPPPS has the basic tools of a student-centered learning lesson. It helps us to
focus on student learning by making the purpose of the lesson clear, by assessing students‟ prior
knowledge, by engaging students in active learning, and by reinforcing what has been learned
through summaries and assessments. These components involve activities that allow students to
clarify, question, consolidate and appropriate new knowledge. It promotes students „interest in
the subject and encourage their participation. These tools provide sense to our students that
teachers are enthusiastic about their teaching and confident about their students „learning
abilities. The whole session, we worked on BOPPPS strategy however three “PPP “ are most
powerful tools because they are the source of knowledge, confidence, courage ,interest,
persuasion and implementation before, and after into the classroom. I want to underscore the
importance of interacting with writing in a positive way by examining creativity and word usage,
in addition to the mechanics of writing. We write the way we think and speak, and by analyzing
our writing we begin to analyze our thoughts and speech as well. When students discuss their
writing they are able to see their thoughts and statements from someone else's perspective and
they gain awareness of their own language development. In this age of technology where a lot of
communication is done electronically, it is more important than ever those students develop the
ability to state their thoughts clearly and accurately in writing.

There is no doubt; I have used a lot of incorporated knowledge into my classroom during
teaching. I have learned three basic levels: text to text, text to self, and self to the world and I am
ready to apply confidently into my classroom. From the first day and till now of my class, at least
thousands of books, I have thoroughly studied especially their writer‟s point of view about
education and knowledge. I have gone through different perspective, opinions and philosophy
about student and classroom from fifth century to twenty first century. It is really interesting that
all of them have discovered that classroom is the most effective tool of education. I have
attended only five classes, however a lot of knowledge and variety of strategies about effective
learning and teaching, I have learned into my classroom. Since 1994, I have been teaching; first
school then college and last ten years in University and now in lone Star College. Throughout the
whole life I got a great teaching and learning experience because I believe teaching and learning,
both run together. Learning is a continuous process, it does not have end. In classroom, every
student is different. They belong to different culture, religion, language and race, however one
thing is common they are all human being and they want individual respect. From the first day of

my class, I have worked on this strategy. I respect my students and peruse them to do the same
attitude with other students also. Mostly the word “democracy” we use for politics. However, in
my dictionary, it defines individual respect that is most effective and persuasive tool for my
classroom. The most important tool, I have used in my classroom that is technology, the most
powerful and interesting tool “http//www.classtools.net”.

Research indicates that teachers‟ preparation their knowledge of teaching and learning,
subject matter knowledge, experience, and the combined set of qualifications measured by
teacher licensure are all leading factors in teacher effectiveness. ACP helps us to develop the
knowledge and skill what we need into the classroom to produce higher student achievement
and accomplishment for their better future. I believe that Students get more involved and
learn best when we apply the following strategies into classroom:

 By applying the BOPPPS strategy, pre- assessment, students will be prepared to
share, ask and understand the objective into the classroom

 Use new instructional technology http//www.classtools.net/widgets/quiz40/.Students
will take more interest

 Encourage participation and interactivity in the learning process.
 Find out the students have learnt confidently about the topic.
 Explore students‟ ideas through using „open‟ questions
 Encourage students to put knowledge into their own words
 Pursue the students to elaborate and justify their views, „How did you know that?‟,

„Why?‟
 Allow students extended turns to express their thoughts and reveal their

misunderstandings
 Hold back demonstrations or explanations until the ideas of some students have been

heard
 Use whole class discussion to help students see where their study of a topic is coming

from and where it is going
 Allow students‟ comments to shift the direction of a discussion
 „ Model ‟ ways of using language to present rational arguments, so that students can

learn by example.
I believe by applying the above strategies, I can create more effective and enthusiastic
atmosphere of the classroom.

Coming to an end I would like to say that every year before starting the new session,
faculty should sit together and talk and share variety of strategies to enhance learning and
teaching abilities. Because, communication is the most effective tool like Adjunct Certification
Course, we organize seminars and workshops for better and up to date teaching and learning
experiences. I have learned a lot how we have to share successes and challenges with colleagues
that help us to grow our teaching professionally and confidently, and more students will benefit
academically.

This ACP course has great development opportunities for Adjunct Instructors. I believe it
will open new doors soon towards full time teaching. I say thank you with bottom of the heart to
Lone Star College for this excellent opportunity of learning and my professor who helped me a
lot.
