Building a Culture of Approval Relational Values At Work Session 3: Giving Approval
Giving Approval How Am I Doing at Giving to Others? • Now that you know more about approval, it is important to focus on giving it! To learn how well you are doing at giving this need, take this short assessment. • Click here to take the Approval Individual Assessment (Part 2). • Show You Care: After you have taken the assessment, share your results with a colleague or co-worker. “I took an assessment recently, to help me know how I am doing at giving approval. According to the assessment…(I need to be more intentional about giving approval to others; I am somewhat effective in giving approval to others; or meeting this need is one of my strengths). How do you think I’m doing at giving approval?” Remember: When people are imperfect in the things they do, don’t forget to see who they are. A person’s worth isn’t the same as their performance. Who they are ≠ What they do” Week 3 © Relational Values Alliance 7
Practice Giving: Take Action: Make a Plan to Give • To become a more approving person, we need to practice giving approval to others. Click HERE to learn 30 positive character qualities you can affirm in others, then watch the video for inspiration. • Video: Teacher with Talkative Student • Show You Care: Choose one positive character trait (use the list above if needed) that you see in one of your co-workers. Share these words, “I’m always impressed by your _____. I see this trait in you when _____. I’m really grateful you bring this quality to our team.” • Next, what two specific people will you give approval to this week? ° Who needs you to notice a positive character trait and talk to them privately? Name the quality and when you’ve seen it. ° Who has done great work recently? What character trait(s) did this person live out while accomplishing this work? Share both. ° Who needs you to notice something that’s impressive or honorable? Who needs to be bragged on in front of others? ° Who needs a handwritten note of approval from you this week? Tell them how grateful you are to be working alongside them. • Choose these two people and how you plan to give to them. Share your plans with another colleague, friend, or mentor. 8 © Relational Values Alliance
