The Names of God:
Emmanuel

Flourishing in Faith
Emmanuel
“God with Us”
“The Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria with all his pomp…Its
outspread wings will cover the breadth
of your land, Emmanuel...Devise your
strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose
your plan, but it will not stand, for God is
with us” (Isaiah 8:5–10).

Emmanuel can be
translated “with us is God.”
It is the name of a child,
symbolizing the presence
of God to deliver his people
and to make them whole
again (Matthew 1:21–23).
Emmanuel is a declaration
of trust and confidence
in the Word of God to be
fulfilled (Isaiah 7:14).
The Emmanuel prophecy
speaks of the fulfillment of
God’s will, despite all the
plans and preparations
Syria, Israel, and Judah
make against it. God is with
both the Assyrian army, as
an instrument of judgment,
and the prophet Isaiah, as a
messenger of God.

The word of the Lord would
come to pass no matter
what the three nations did
to prepare against it (Isaiah
8:5–10).
Pray for Yourself
“Lord, thank you that I
am not alone, as you are
present with me (Matthew
1:23; John 1:14). Save me
from my tendency to lack
faith in your promises
(Isaiah 7:14). Make me
whole and flourishing
because I wish for your
presence to be observed by
others in my life (Matthew
28:19-20).”

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to
give him the name Jesus, because he will save
his people from their sins. All this took place
to fulfill what the Lord had said through the
prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth
to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel
(which means God with us)” (Matthew 1:21–23).
Emmanuel has come. At the bidding of the
angel of the Lord, Joseph calls his name, “Jesus”
because he will deliver his people from their
wicked ways. “She will give birth to a son, and
you are to give him the name Jesus, because he
will save his people from their sins”
(Matthew 1:21). Emmanuel points to Jesus’ role
to bring God’s presence to humanity. “The virgin
will conceive and give birth to a son, and they
will call him Emmanuel (which means “God
with us”)” (Matthew 1:23).
Pray for Others
“I pray for _______ to be thwarted in his/her own
way and to avoid striving against your will for
his/her life and vocation (Isaiah 8:10). Increase
his/her trust and confidence in the redeeming
work of Jesus to heal, protect, and deliver on
his/her behalf (Matthew 1:21).”

Faith Relationships Wellness Vocation Finance
In “whole-life” discipleship, the focus of John 10:10 broadens from
only focusing exclusively on faith to including other dimensions
of “abundant life” or flourishing such as relationships, wellness,
vocation, and finances.
In “whole-life” discipleship, missional churches engage
their members and reach seekers through giving priority
to a Spirit-empowered faith which can be defined with
observable outcomes using a biblical framework. The
metrics for measuring Spirit-empowered faith or the growth of a
disciple come from Scripture and are organized/framed around
four distinct dimensions of a disciple who serves from Ephesians
4:11–12.
Therefore, the “40 Spirit-Empowered Faith Outcomes” have been
identified and organized around:
• Serving/loving the Lord—(Acts 13:2) L1-10.
• Serving/loving His Word—(Acts 6:4) W1-10.
• Serving/loving people—(Galatians 5:13) P1-10.
• Serving/loving His mission—(2 Corinthians 5:18) M1-10.
