Morven P Center fo 9 Since 2014, the Morven Park Center for Civic Impact has offered free programs to kindergarten through 12th grade students. Using hands-on activities, the team teaches students how to be active and engaged community members and discover that their voice matters. In 2025, the team reached 9,000 Loudoun County students and even expanded to Arlington County where 88 students used the Watershed Allies virtual lesson. Updates to the center’s online portal made it easier for teachers to sign up for virtual lessons, and the team piloted new lessons for 3rd and 5th grades. Our current database documents, and curre names, including 17,7 identified as enslaved self-emancipated.4,492Key MetrAlthough it began as a project to learn and document the names of the enslaved at Morven Park, the 246 Years Project has grown to have a national scope. This free, online database strives toshed light on the lives of enslaved people whose records of existence were largely limited toproperty ledgers from the beginning of African slavery in America in 1619 to emancipation throughthe ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865.A small team of Morven Park volunteers work to enter documents from the Loudoun County Clerkof the Circuit Court Historic Records & Deeds Office, Oatlands, Old Stone Church Foundation, andthe Town of Leesburg Thomas Balch Library into the 246 Years Project database. In 2025, thistotaled 11,112 names and 1,270 documents. As this free database grows, we hope to make new discoveries like that of Betsey Willson, whosestory appears on the next page, and restore their stories. Learn more and explore the database at246years.org.

11Betsey Willson lived an extraordinary 102 years, when she passed away in 1887.Think of what she saw in her lifetime:She was just two years old when the U.S. Constitution was signed.Twenty-nine when the British burned the White House. And by the time the 13th Amendment ended slavery, she was eighty years old.For most of her life, Betsey was enslaved by the Swann family of Morven Park.In 1833, Thomas Swann took out a $1,500 loan and used five enslaved children ascollateral — among them were Betsey’s children, Jane (15) and Sandy (13). If Swanncouldn’t repay the debt in 90 days, the children would be sold at auction. One canonly imagine the terror that hung in the air during those long three months.Thankfully, Swann repaid the loan in time, and Jane and Sandy were spared. When Swann died in 1840, an inventory of his property listed Betsey, Jane, andSandy. His will passed Jane and her daughter Martha to his son Wilson Swann, whileBetsey herself likely went to Wilson’s brother, Thomas Swann, Jr. Both men inheritedparts of Morven Park — and most of the people their father had enslaved. In the years that followed, Betsey became a grandmother again. Her daughter Janegave birth to Henry in 1853 and another son in 1857, both recorded in the 246 YearsProject archives. After the Civil War, the paper trail fades. Betsey’s name does not appear in the 1870or 1880 census, and her exact whereabouts are lost to history. Then, in 1883, her name surfaces again in a most unexpected place. When ThomasSwann, Jr., by then a former Mayor of Baltimore, Governor of Maryland, and U.S.Senator, died, newspapers covered his funeral. The Washington Evening Star notedthat an elderly woman, Betsey Willson, accompanied his remains as they passedthrough Washington, D.C. The article described her as having been born inAlexandria, remembered the War of 1812, and once served as nurse to the youngThomas Swann, Jr.Four years later, at the remarkable age of 102, Betsey Willson passed away, havinglived through revolution, war, and emancipation.Betsey Willson: A Century of Change

12Grounds and GardensAs a private park open to the public 365 days a year, Morven Park’s 1,000 acres offers visitors a placeto play, learn and discover. Visitors can walk through scenic formal gardens, picnic under the boughsof old oak trees, and hike miles of beautiful nature trails. In 2025, we painted and upgraded several of the equestrian center barns, added new informationkiosks to key areas around the park, and continued to plant, mulch, prune and maintain our gardens. We also replaced the roof on Corbell House, which currently houses the Preservation & History Team, and the nearby Laundry/Dairy Building. These stone and stucco buildings date to the early 1800s,when Morven Park was owned by the Swann family.
