Please hold your applause until the rider makes a final haltand salutes the judge.Have you ever wondered what would happen if a triathloninvolved more moving parts?Welcome to the sport of eventing! Morven Park has hosted recognized Horse Trialssince 1973, when the event was under the direction of cavalry master Major JohnLynch and the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute.Like a triathlon, eventing (also called Horse Trials) features three different equestriandisciplines—dressage, show jumping, and cross-country. Each phase demonstratesthe grace, bravery, and athleticism of the horse/rider combo, fully embracing thedefinition of a well-rounded athlete.Horse Trials Explained

Horses and riders put on their cross-country gearand test their bravery and athleticism over terrainfeaturing logs, ditches, embankments, and waterobstacles. Depending on the level of competition, course lengths range from 2 to 4.5 miles, and areridden at a gallop, with exact speed requirements foreach level. It’s safest to enter the cross-country course at thebeginning of the competition or during breaks. Theannouncer will indicate those breaks.Spectator tips: Horse and rider are in a state of concentration, so please holdyour applause until you see them cross the finish line.Over a course of 12–15 jumps that can easily be knocked down, horse and ridershowcase their ability to think quickly on their feet. Horses may touch a rail withoutpenalty, but if the rail falls, or if the horse refuses to jump, the rider receives fourpenalties per issue.SHOW JUMPINGCROSS-COUNTRY
