Why do I encourage such behaviour? I do so
because it is proven that when you question
why things are done, you will come up with
some interesting observations – some valid,
others less so. But it only takes one valid
observation to lead to a ‘breakthrough’
moment in terms of how we do things that
can change the fundamentals of how we go
about our business.
After all wasn’t it Albert Einstein who
stated that the definition of insanity was to

So, as we all strive for a competitive

Roof Refurbishment on

EastEnders Set

IT WAS A STAR-STUDDED
AFFAIR FOR OUR COBSEN-

RECENTLY HAD THE PLEASURE
OF COMPLETING A £135K
BOILER ROOF REFURBISHMENT
FOR WATES GROUP AT BBC
STUDIOS ELSTREE… THE VERY
SAME STUDIOS WHERE
EASTENDERS, HOLBY CITY AND
THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN
PROGRAMMES ARE FILMED!

The roof build up was an Omnis
0.7mm gauge steel liner with a
bar and bracket system and
mineral wool insulation, whilst
the top sheet was a sinusoidal
powder coated sheet with
dummy roof lights. Our team
also fitted the UPVc fascia and
gutters.
The building is part of the
“Albert Square” (EastEnders)
redevelopment whereby a whole
new Albert Square set is being
built on the old staff car park!
The Boiler house will eventually be the backdrop for some EastEnders scenes as a brewery
and we are told they are going to apply milk to the roof to age it appropriately!
The top image shows the building prior to major demolition and alteration with an asbestos
roof covering. The bottom photo is of the completed building, which is housing the electrical feeds
and heating boilers for the entire studios.
Whilst the works were being carried out, our operatives often had to stop working so filming
could continue. Our Senior Contracts Manager, Graham Geal was onsite regularly and often saw
the EastEnders actors walking about set!

AVONSIDE AWARD SEASON

Avonside Edinburgh Win

Slating Award at NFRC

Scotland Awards

MASSIVE CELEBRATIONS WERE HAD AT OUR
AVONSIDE EDINBURGH BRANCH AS THE TEAM
WERE RECOGNISED FOR THEIR HIGH STANDARD
OF SLATING WORK ON THE DALBEATTIE
LEARNING CAMPUS PROJECT.

Enjoying an awards ceremony hosted by BBC
Scotland’s Jackie Bird in The Principal Grand
Central Hotel in Glasgow on Friday 26th October,
Avonside Edinburgh were commended for
delivering 6000m2 of slating (including vertical
slating), Single Ply flat roofing, RWG, aluminium
gutters and downpipes, leadwork and PPC
flashings whilst employing local operatives on the
award-winning project.
Our Glasgow and Edinburgh Area Director,
Chris McLean said: “We were delighted to receive
this award in a category renowned for the high
calibre of entrants. The project was technically
challenging with a demanding programme. The
team put in a great deal of effort to deliver a
quality project and we’re very proud of this
accolade.”
The Dalbeattie Learning Campus, which
secured The Construction News Community
engagement project of the Year Award, replaces primary and secondary schools with one single,
Dumfries and Galloway Council’s range of nursey, innovative learning campus.
What’s memorable about the project is the
commitment contractor Graham Construction
had to getting feedback from pupils, with the
majority of students’ suggestions being
incorporated into the project.
One child even asked for a slide to enable
them to leave school at the end of each day by
riding down it…much to the child’s (and no doubt
many teachers’) delight, a slide was installed!

were projected onto the Avonside stand, which

At a time when the roofing industry is

them in good stead for a fulfilling and rewarding
