TEACH A LIFE, FOR LIFE
FIFTH STRINGS CONCERT

27 MAY 2018
10 SQUARE AUDITORIUM

TEACHER EILEEN’S
MESSAGE

Thank you for joining me this afternoon at Teach a Life,
For Life’s Fifth Annual Concert.

Today’s location is the grandest in our history so far –
a beautiful auditorium at 10 Square, Orchard Central.

A few of you may remember that we held our first concert
in a condominium clubhouse, with about eight students.
Twice, we had our event at a bookstore in CityLink
Mall (Booktique Where Writers Shop). And last year, we
performed at the Hood Bar & Café in Bugis+ (see photo
page 2).

The purpose of these performances is to provide students
with a platform for playing the pieces they have learned,
in a loving and encouraging environment – and have fun
in the process.

Whereever we may be, let’s continue to play the music in
the spirit of continuous learning and fun. Thank you.

Dykes is from England. At the age of ten, he started to perform at
St. John’s Church. Did you know that he played the piano and the

ALAN MENKEN (b.1949)

Alan Menken was born in Manhattan, USA. His popular works include
the movie theme for Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. One interesting
fact is that when Alan was a young boy, he wanted to be a dentist!

Tale as Old as Time was written in 1991. It describes the relationship
between its two main characters, Belle and the Beast, and how the
couple learned to accept their differences and in turn change each
other for the better.

HENRY CLAY WORK (1832–1884)

Henry Work was an American composer. In addition to My Grandfather’s
Clock, his other popular works include Kingdom Coming and Come Home,
Father. Henry was a self-taught musician – so he’s an inspiration for me!
:D

My Grandfather’s Clock was written in 1876. That was 142 years ago!
The work was inspired by a true story of two brothers who owned a
hotel where the clock stood. The clock was as old as its owners, and after
one of the brothers passed on, the clock started to lose time.

J. B. LULLY (1632–1687)

Lully (pronounced “loo-lee”) was a famous French composer, dancer
and violinist who was born in Italy. Lully worked for the king, Louis XIV,
and he wrote many operas, ballet music and church music. His music
was often fast and lively.

The gavotte is a French dance, and Lully wrote many gavottes for
the king. However, the Gavotte in A minor is believed to have been
written by Lully’s student, Marin Marais, and dedicated to Lully.

londonderry air MARIAN WANG
TEH ZI CHUN
Arr. Edward Huws Jones

Londonderry Air has a long and interesting story behind it. It uses the
ancient Irish tune “Danny Boy”. The most popular lyrics (“Oh Danny Boy,
the pipes, the pipes are calling...”) were written by English songwriter
Frederic Weatherly in 1910.

The tune was said to have been written by a blind harpist, Rory Dall
O’Cahan. It was then heard by another blind harpist Jimmy McCurry, and
in turn was heard and finally written by Jane Ross. Jane sent the copy
of the tune to Dr George Petrie, who was devoted to the study of Irish
music. Jane did not have a title for the tune, but explained that it was a
very old air from County Londonderry in Ireland.

In 1965, the melody was used in a song named “A Lover’s Concerto”,
which has the same tune as the famous Minuet in G.

Ambroise THOMAS (1811–1896)

AmbroiseThomas was a long-time director of the Paris Conservatory. His
work Mignon, written in 1866, was a wildly-successful three-act comic
opera based on Goethe’s novel, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. The story is
about a romantic rivalry between two female characters – dishonest
Philine and loving Mignon. By 1919, Mignon had been performed more
than one thousand times at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The opera’s
popularity inspired the Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate to write this
virtuoso showpiece Romance et Gavotte de Mignon, Op. 16.

TEH ZI CHUN
F. J. GOSSEC (1734–1829)

Gossec was a French composer. He could play both the violin and the
harpsichord. And because of his long 95 years of life, he lived through
the Classical and Romantic periods!

Gavotte was written in 1750. The original melody is easily recognisable
to people as it has been featured in a number of Looney Tunes. Also,
because of the popularity of the melody, the simple rhythms and
melodic decorations, it is great for many concert shows.

LUIGI BOCCHERINI (1743–1805)

Boccherini was a composer and cellist who was born in Lucca,
Italy. His other popular music include Gloria in F major and Credo in C

patrons included the Prussian King, Friedrich Wilhelm II and French
Prince Lucien Bonaparte.

The Minuet was written in 1771 for social dances, where short steps
are choreograhed. The minuet as a dance form was popular in France
in the 18th and 19th centuries.

SONATA IN E, ALLEGRO NG YI XUAN
TEH ZI CHUN
G. F. HANDEL (1685–1759)

Handel was born in Germany. His popular compositions include
Hallelujah, The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and Air in E Major. Handel’s
father, a lawyer, was at first not supportive of his musical aspirations. As
a boy, Handel had to practise in secret, when his parents were asleep.
However, the Duke of Johann Adolf was so impressed when he heard
the boy play the organ that he convinced Handel’s father to let him
study music.

There were no specific reasons why the Sonata in E was written. People
have even wondered if it was actually written by Handel. Mondern
scholars have labelled this work as “spurious”.

ROBERT LOPEZ & KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ (ARR. Eileen Chai)

Remember Me is written by the Academy Award-winning songwriting
duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez for the Disney movie
Coco. In the story, young Miguel realises that his real great grandfather,
Hector, was a great musician, who loved singing “Remember Me” to his
daughter, Coco, every night. Joining me on the guitar is Uncle Ben. This
moving piece I am playing today is arranged by Teacher Eileen.

AMANDA JEAN NG ADVENTURE IN D MAJOR
AMANDA JEAN NG
BEN KRANEN

As an adult student, I enjoy focusing on performance skills as well as
improvising and composing techniques. At first, I was daunted by the
thought of creating a piece and performing it, but it has been a very
fun process!

I started writing this piece in February 2018. I chose D major because
it was one of the first keys I learned and it’s very comfortable to play
in. It’s really an ‘adventure’to explore what I can do in this scale and try
to express my feelings in a melodic form. I also drew inspiration from
the genres I like – pop/rock, video game and movie soundtrack music.

As this is my first foray into composing, I thought “Adventure in D
Major” was a fitting title!

Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany. A Romantic composer,
he wrote a number of major works for the orchestra, including four
symphonies. Brahms was an uncompromising perfectionist, which
meant that he decided to destroy some of his works and leave many
others unpublished.

His Hungarian Dances are a set of 21 lively dance tunes. They were
completed in 1869. The No. 5 is a well-known piece based on a csárdás
(traditional Hungarian folk dance) piece originally written by the
Hungarian composer Béla Kéler.

FROM THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
ANDREW LLOYD WEBER (b.1948) BEN KRANEN

Andrew Lloyd Weber is the elder son of the late William Lloyd Webber
(composer and organist) and the late Jean Hermione Johnstone (violinist
and pianist). In addition to pieces for The Phantom of the Opera, he also
wrote “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar, “Don’t
Cry for Me, Argentina” from Evita, “Any Dream Will Do” from Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and “Memory” from Cats.

The Music of the Night was composed around 1986 for The Phantom
of the Opera, which premiered in the same year. The Phantom sings this
song to Christine as he tries to persuade her to “belong to him”.

ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678–1741)

Vivaldi was an Italian composer who is recognised as one of the greatest
composers of the Baroque period. He was also a violinist, teacher and
a priest. His very popular work is the Four Seasons. He wrote many
concertos for instruments and heavily contributed to the development
of the violin as a solo instrument.

The Concerto in A Minor is from a set of 12 concertos for stringed
instruments, first published in 1711 in Amsterdam. These concertos were
Vivaldi’s first music pieces that were published.

YASMYNN VIOLIN SONATA IN F, OP. 24, ALLEGRO
DINOALFIAN
Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN (1770–1827)
TEACHER WAN SHAN
Beethoven was an influential German composer whose music spanned
both the Classical and Romantic periods. His works include nine
symphonies, five piano concertos, thirty-two piano sonatas and one
violin concerto.

The Violin Sonata in F, also known as the Spring Sonata, was
published in 1801. The Allegro movement opens with a lyrical theme
that harmonises beautifully over the delicate keyboard accompaniment,
creating an echo effect between the violin and piano. The development
begins in a minor key, causing a muscial conflict. In the recapitulation,
the minor key creeps back in with the opening motif.

MAEGAN CHEW violin CONCERTO NO. 3 IN G, ALLEGRO, K.216
TEACHER WAN SHAN
Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756–1791)

Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria during the Classical period. A a
music prodigy, he started playing the piano at age 5. One of his most
famous pieces is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

In 1775, Mozart developed a love for violin concertos; hence the piece
I’m playing today. The Violin Concerto No. 3 was written when Mozart
was just 19. The first movement, Allegro, is written in sonata form, a
structure that was widely used during the Classical period. As I perform,
you can hear that the motif begins the piece and recapitulates in the
second half.
