A Northern League Roundup

The Colliers picked up their first 3 points of the season last Wednesday night with a last gasp winner at
North Shields. Gerard Richardson nicking the only goal of the game. 3 days later Guisborough Town
made their longest trip north of the league season and left with all 3 points in a fiery encounter that has
3 goals and 3 red cards. Hopefully Jay Hornsby isn’t as badly injured as it looks but the challenge that
led to the young fullback limping off added anger to the events. Moments later Shaun Henderson, Da-
mien Stevens and Guisborough’s Anthony Hume all saw red as both teams clashed after Henderson’s
late challenge during which Stevens appeared to be on the receiving end of a wedgy! (see pic below).

Elsewhere in division one Blyth AFC went top after a home win against West Auckland Town and then
becoming the 2nd Woodhorn Lane based side to leave North Shields with 3 points within a couple of
days. Dan Wilson looking a great signing whilst leading the scoring chart with 5 goals in 4 league
games for the Braves.

New boys Whickham, our next visitors to Woodhorn Lane, sit bottom of the table after losing their first 4
games back in division one. The latest being a 1-0 loss away to tonight’s opponents Consett. The Coun-
ty Durham side boasting an 100% record after the opening 3 games scoring 10 and only conceding 3 in
the process.

Whitley Bay’s hopes of some sort of response to their 8-0 hammering at Dunston last week evaporated
as West Auckland won 2-0 at Hillheads while Bishop Auckland are enjoying a much better start to this
campaign after putting 5 past Ryhope CW who hit 2 in response.

In division two Billingham Town and Chester-Le-Street both scored 7 goals at home beating Bedlington
Terriers (7-0) & Northallerton (7-2) respectively.

Redcar Athletic enjoyed their afternoon as they beat Durham City 4-0 while Easington Colliery winning
2-1 at home to Jarrow.

IT’S PLANE & SIMPLE FOR BOWEY!

By Brian Bennett

Gerard Richardson’s late winner against North Shields on Wednesday night was
the perfect tonic for the whole of the Ashington FC contingent. It certainly helped
dispel the gloom and doom after their inglorious defeat by Knaresborough in the
FA Cup five days earlier as the Colliers got their first three points of the season.

However for manager Steve Bowey, it was the perfect ending to what was a tiring day: “I had been away
abroad on a family holiday and been up since 4.30am as we flew back into this country landing at Glas-
gow Airport at 1.45pm,” he said, “I then drove to Stanley to drop my wife and kids off before heading to
the ground at North Shields and arriving at 6.30pm - but I don’t feel tired at all after this great result – cer-
tainly not as tired if we hadn’t got the win. The effort, enthusiasm and the work rate which the lads put in
tonight were what I’m all about - and that’s what I want them to produce. I’ve just told them – if you put
110 per cent graft and determination in, you will get rewards and that’s what they did. North Shields are
a very good passing side who had good spells of the game and they have some lively players but we
stuck to our task. Glenn Caygill came in at centre half and David Edwards, a midfielder, slotted in beside
him - and I thought the two of them were brilliant. We also had signed Adam Humphries and Lewis King -
the latter who is an 18 year old and on loan to us from Spennymoor Town - and we shook things up a bit to
try and get a result.”

He continued: “I have just said that apart from Saturday’s defeat by Knaresborough, we have been a little
bit unlucky with the results but tonight’s performance typifies what I’m in football for – the sheer joy I got
out of the game especially when we scored in the 92nd minute. It’s what football is made of – every one of
us was celebrating as if we had won the FA Cup - but it was also a step in the right direction. We’ve taken
three points and now we need to focus on Saturday’s home game against Guisborough Town. The lads
will enjoy tonight – after a result like this, it’s easy having to get up for work in the morning so I’m very,
very happy. It’s the old cliché where I would have been happy with a point but we got a corner and Kyle
(Downey) has put a ball across and Gerard (Richardson) has ghosted in and scored a magnificent goal
for us - his third of the season. Gerard is great in the air – and to be fair, it’s an unstoppable Alan Shearer
esque-like header. I thought the celebrations were fully deserved. You come away from home and have-
n’t conceded which was the most important thing tonight. We have shipped a lot of goals of late and I told
the lads ‘if you keep a clean sheet we’ll come away with a point’ – but we’ve done better than that.”

He went on: “In the first half, Shields had a lot of possession and looked dangerous. They moved the ball
around well and put a few good balls into the box and they probably felt a bit unfortunate not to have
gone into the dressing rooms at half time ahead. But you’ve got to take your chances and if you look at
the game as a whole, our goalkeeper (Conor Grant) didn’t make a lot of saves despite North Shields hav-
ing a lot of good play in dangerous areas and whipping a lot of balls across the box but with no one on the
end of them. Shields will be gutted in their dressing room - it’s not nice when you lose in the last minute –
but they are not alone as we’ve been in that position before.”
