EUA OUTPATIENT EXPERIENCE 1

July 2019

Design to elevate people’s potential | EUA

We believe at its core, architecture is not about bricks, mortar, wood, glass and steel.
It’s not really even about plans or aesthetics. Sure, these are all important but anyone
can give you these things.
We believe at its heart, architecture is about people.
We believe architecture has the power to unleash true human potential. The power to
enable people to be their best. The power to inspire people to be better human beings.
This is a big promise.
We don’t make it alone. Our team includes our clients. It includes everyone who uses
and enjoys the spaces we create. Delivering on the promise requires dedication,
listening closely, working diligently, collaborating relentlessly and executing brilliantly.
It’s no small task; we can only accomplish it together.
We believe that when we create a school that people love to be in, instructors are
inspired and students stay engaged. When we create a welcoming caring environment
where family actually enjoys visiting, then families strengthen. When we design
workplaces that empower people to do their best, then organizations can thrive and
grow in previously unimagined new ways.
We believe great architecture is about more than elevating the environment.
We believe great architecture is about elevating people’s potential.

OUTPATIENT + NEW CONSTRUCTION

Consolidate practices to
create a warm + inviting
healing destination

Positioned alongside Interstate 94 for maximum visibility
and access, Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin,
combines two autonomous operations into a single
location for maximum patient and staff efficiency.

With an intent to create a community destination for
health and wellness and increase patient referral
numbers, the patient experience was improved by
offering a variety of personalized spaces. Quiet zones,
open seating, hospitality lounges, clear wayfinding
and abundant daylighting contribute to the serene,
welcoming environment. To support workflow and allow
increased caregiver access to patients, staff efficiency
is optimized by clustering private exam pods around a
central workstation, with centrally-placed exam tables to
allow access from all sides and support varying patient
acuity. Moving away from private offices at the previous
locations, physicians utilize pod-style work zones with a
high-end physician retreat.

AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER +
NEW CONSTRUCTION

Focus on providing exceptional
patient care to deliver a comfortable
+ high-quality patient experience

EUA and Miron Construction worked to design a new
urology clinic and ambulatory surgery center that delivers
a comfortable and high-quality experience for patients.
The team equipped the client with options for efficient
design and long-term maintainability strategies. To
minimize patient steps and reduce anxiety, care was
placed in streamlining patient flow and separating pre-op
and post-op traffic. Analyzing procedures done at four
different facilities and appointments at two, the team
developed a facility that could meet and flex to future
demand for the combined practices.

The design concept, inspired by a “Respite in the Woods”
theme, offers a calming and serene environment for
patients. Natural elements are incorporated through
the use of wood and organic patterns and large
back-lit art bring light into the space. This intentional
use of materials and lighting creates clearly identifiable
areas and points of reference for patient wayfinding.
Large canopies create a visually appealing entrance while
assisting in easily navigable areas. The reception areas
are designed with flexibility for advances in patient care
and future technology.

OUTPATIENT + NEW CONSTRUCTION

Provide expanded services that
enhance the community

Working closely with a developer, Ryan Companies,
and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin,
EUA built a new, highly visible three-story health center
with a wellness and sports medicine focus. Specialty
services offered in this facility are the first of its kind
in Milwaukee’s North Shore communities, making it a
destination for patients and athletes alike.

A particular draw for local high school and college
athletes, the facility is home to a two-story performance
gym and rehabilitation space, including a 60-yard
football field, sand pit, batting cage, weight training and
cardio area. Athletes train with the convenience and
security of knowing medical needs can be met on-site,
including physical therapy, primary and urgent care,
orthopaedics, imaging and spine care. An on-site lab and
retail pharmacy provide additional convenience.

OUTPATIENT + NEW CONSTRUCTION

Design a purposeful flow to improve
staff + patient movement

Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin
consolidated three existing clinics into one new state-of-
the-art orthopaedic and sports medicine facility to serve
Menomonee Falls and the surrounding communities.
As a result of EUA’s Lean-led design process that began
with a stakeholder visioning session, followed by existing
clinic tours to observe processes and flows, new patient
referrals have increased by 56% and monthly rehab visits
by 48%.

The design supports strategic operational processes
featuring shared registration and exam pods with central
team work areas to support a team-based approach.
Exam rooms have separate patient and staff entries and
feature a standardized layout to improve staff efficiency
and patient movement.

The building includes a two-story sports simulation space,
therapy pool, physical therapy / rehabilitation gym and
treatment rooms and radiology.

OUTPATIENT + RENOVATION

Create an efficient and community-
focused clinic to provide a high level
of care to patients

Starting their own private practice, this group of
physicians wanted to transform a former veterinary
college on a tight schedule. With various satellite clinics
throughout the area, their new clinic serves as a central
location to offer heart and vascular services and provide
exceptional patient care. From a welcoming reception
area to comfortable exam rooms and simple circulation,
this transformed clinic focuses on the patient experience
and staff efficiency.

In the center of the exam rooms are collaborative staff
workstations with glass fronts to provide transparency and
ease-of-access to patients. An open office area and staff
break areas allows physicians and staff to interact and
share knowledge throughout the day.

With a tight timeline, EUA worked with the Owners and
Construction Manager to ensure constant communication
and allow for flexibility throughout design and
construction to create a facility that realizes the vision and
goals of the clinic. A future-focused design, this space
allows for potential expansion and incorporates state-of-
the-art technology while maintaining adaptable spaces as
technology advances.
