Design to elevate people’s potential | EUA
We believe at its core, architecture and engineering is not about bricks,
mortar, wood, glass and steel. It’s not really even about plans or aesthetics.
Sure, these are all important but anyone can give you these things.
We believe at its heart, design is about people.
We believe design has the power to unleash true human potential. The
power to enable people to be their best. The power to inspire people to be
better human beings.
This is a big promise.
We don’t make it alone. Our team includes our clients. It includes everyone
who uses and enjoys the spaces we create. Delivering on the promise
requires dedication, listening closely, working diligently, collaborating
relentlessly and executing brilliantly. It’s no small task; we can only
accomplish it together.
We believe great design is about more than elevating the environment.
We believe great design is about elevating people’s potential.

Focus on efficiency to provide
quality + patient-centered care
well into the future
The client’s goal was to develop a functional, practical
and flexible campus; creating a signature statement for
the hospital system and enlarging Froedtert & MCW’s
presence in southeastern Wisconsin. This new health center
is designed to be a destination medical facility with multiple
specialties at one location.
With a focus on efficient operations, dual access exam
rooms and core staff work areas immediately adjacent
to all patient areas help reduce staff distance and
footsteps. The registration areas, waiting rooms, staff
break rooms, conference rooms and offices combine
functions, allowing for improved operations. A centralized
registration offers a multi-suite setup, enabling one central
registration desk to direct patients to waiting areas closer to
individual departments.
The campus is designed for the future. As a component of
the new Oak Creek town center, this facility enhances the
lives and contributes to the attractiveness of the community.

Consolidate practices to create a warm
+ inviting healing destination
Positioned alongside Interstate 94 for maximum visibility
and access, Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin,
combines two autonomous operations into a single
location for maximum patient and staff efficiency.
With an intent to create a community destination for
health and wellness and increase patient referral
numbers, the patient experience was improved by
offering a variety of personalized spaces. Quiet zones,
open seating, hospitality lounges, clear wayfinding
and abundant daylighting contribute to the serene,
welcoming environment. To support workflow and allow
increased caregiver access to patients, staff efficiency
is optimized by clustering private exam pods around a
central workstation, with centrally-placed exam tables to
allow access from all sides and support varying patient
acuity. Moving away from private offices at the previous
locations, physicians utilize pod-style work zones with a
high-end physician retreat.

AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER +
NEW CONSTRUCTION
Focus on providing exceptional
patient care to deliver a comfortable
+ high-quality patient experience
EUA and Miron Construction worked to design a new
urology clinic and ambulatory surgery center that delivers
a comfortable and high-quality experience for patients.
The team equipped the client with options for efficient
design and long-term maintainability strategies. To
minimize patient steps and reduce anxiety, care was
placed in streamlining patient flow and separating pre-op
and post-op traffic. Analyzing procedures done at four
different facilities and appointments at two, the team
developed a facility that could meet and flex to future
demand for the combined practices.
The design concept, inspired by a “Respite in the Woods”
theme, offers a calming and serene environment for
patients. Natural elements are incorporated through
the use of wood and organic patterns and large
back-lit art bring light into the space. This intentional
use of materials and lighting creates clearly identifiable
areas and points of reference for patient wayfinding.
Large canopies create a visually appealing entrance while
assisting in easily navigable areas. The reception areas
are designed with flexibility for advances in patient care
and future technology.

RENOVATION
Bring best-in-class services to the
community + deliver superior patient +
employee experiences
Driven by nearby competition and to be the provider of
choice in the area, Froedtert South’s new surgery center
expands services and improves the patient experience.
The four-story advanced surgical wing addition
accompanies the medical office building completed
by EUA in 2011. To increase speed-to-market, early
collaboration across trades reduced the design schedule
from 18 to 10 months.
To maintain a cohesive aesthetic, the design incorporates
exterior elements from the main hospital. A 65-foot
tower bookends the campus and references an existing
tower on the site. Inside, a three-story hospitality-inspired
lobby is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and a
monumental stair with a wraparound mezzanine. The
cafe and courtyard are connected to the hospital’s atrium
area for ease of access. To increase patient safety, day
surgery is immediately adjacent to the main hospital, and
within prep/recovery, a centrally-located staff core and
nurse stations have high visibility into patient rooms.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the ASC can be
converted to a hospital-based reimbursement model
should the need arise.

MOUNT PLEASANT
HEALTH CENTER
NEW CONSTRUCTION
A new site + a new model of care
focusing on expanding services
in the community
In order to capitalize on the growing workforce in this
industrial area, speed-to-market was a major driver for
this new clinic and ambulatory surgery center (ASC). The
new facility consolidates several services into one location
while expanding imaging and outpatient services in
the community.
Working within the Ascension standards, the planning
maximizes patient convenience and staff efficiency. First
floor departments are organized around a large, daylit
waiting area with clear entries to the various services. The
second floor surgery center has six operating rooms and
three procedure rooms. All ASC recovery rooms are fitted
as PACU rooms to reduce patient movement and
increase efficiency.
An innovative reception layout creates a patient focused
retail feel during the registration process. Standard exam
room layouts allowed the building shell to advance quickly
while interior planning was confirmed. The result is a
distinctive building with flexible planning that provides the
best experience for patients and staff while allowing for
future flexibility as care needs change in this fast-growing
community. The team met the speed to market goal with
the design and construction duration lasting a mere 16
months from programming to occupancy.

AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTERS
+ OUTPATIENT DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
2. COMPETITIVE SITE LOCATION Froedtert & MCW Orthopedic Sports and Spine Center
Selecting the right location is important to ensure Ascension Shorewood Clinic
consistent patient volumes throughout the year. Providers
should take into account a number of considerations
besides traffic flow and visibility:
• A growing population (young consumers + families)
• Nearby retail
• High traffic or busy intersection
• Emergency department nearby
Exterior signature colors and signage heighten awareness
of the provider’s brand and consistency of care.
3. FLEXIBLE ROOM DESIGN
Creating a flexible exam room ensures all patient needs
are met. Moveable computer screens and dedicated
patient table space encourages interaction between
patient and provider while fostering conversation.
Multifunctional furniture can maximize smaller spaces
with adaptable exam chairs or beds. This enables patient
choice for comfort for physical examinations, while
couches or chairs provide space for family members.
4. CENTRALIZED REGISTRATION
Centralizing the registration desk creates a single stop
for patient check-in, avoiding multiple check-ins across
physician practices and improving patient flow. Some
pre-visit steps, like registration, do not require the patient
to be physically present. Installing an electronic kiosk or
implementing an online solution minimizes wait times,
streamlines the process and optimizes provider to
non-clinical staff ratio. The design will flex to support the
intended registration process and facility goals.
