LOGGING OFF...writers abi wykoff & abby kuilan | designer rylee bokeschII could share a list of goodbyes as my time with The Olentangy Orange Courier comes to an end; of course to Mrs. Phillips, our writers, designers and co-editors. But also to our readers, those who reluctantly purchased and those who eagerly awaited each issue. To the administration who always bought, read and supported- forever giving us so many of the freedoms that every student publication deserves. And of course to our district staff, for pouring time, money and efforts into our school journalism program; getting us state of the art technology, workspaces and so much more. There are also so many more thank-you’s and hellos that I have to pass around. The school’s journalism program has allotted me so many opportunities and has opened unimaginable gateways for my future. looking back on my time with the newsmagazine has made me so eternally grateful for each and every experience that I have had on the staff. From sophomore year copy editing every issue (while it took a lot of time, it fine tuned my editing skills for future endeavors). Then junior year, working as the cover projects manager- I enhanced my creativity and management capabilities. now during senior year, I feel like we have never stopped moving around the newsmagazine room. There’s always a buzz, clicking keyboards and printing papers. And I have to say… I love it. That is easily what I am going to miss most about the newsmagazine, the noise, the energy and the life that each and every one of our staff members brings. as the control freak in me hates to step away from this phenomenal staff, I cannot wait to see what grows and fosters after the class of 2026 moves on. I am so grateful for Mrs. Phillips, my co-writing editor Abby and my designer editors Rylee and Sakara, for going through this amazing year of growth with me. -Abi Wykoff4 | seniorMy whole life, I had never been the type of person to go outside my comfort zone; I was perfectly fine with staying in my own lane and never having to try anything new. This changed when I decided to join The Courier at the end of my freshman year. Joining the publication was my first step into becoming more confident in who I was and my abilities, not just as a staff member, but as a person too. My sophomore year self would not be able to believe how much I have accomplished in The Courier and that my goal to become co editor in chief was finally achieved. It’s so surreal that this will be my final story after three years on staff as mainly a writer and a part-time designer, albeit a terrible one, to being a business manager my junior year, and then finally an editorin-chief my senior year. I won’t lie and say I didn’t have many ups and downs in this class, from not getting any valuable interviews to constantly turning in copies past the deadline (my bad) and to messed up subscription orders, they’re all moments I truly wouldn’t change for the world. I want to thank foremost, Mrs. Phillips, for giving me so many wonderful opportunities and truly helping create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, and creativity can flourish. This publication has been consistently one of my favorite moments throughout my day, and she is to thank. I want to thank the current staff and my co-editors in chief, Abi, Rylee, and Sakara, for making this such an amazing experience for my final year and helping make sure things were running smoothly. Finally, I want to wish the utmost best to all my underclassmen staff; I can’t wait to witness what you accomplish. -Abby Kuilan

GOODBYE KPit’s not you, it’s uswriters the senior courier staff | designer rylee bokeschsenior | 5Dear Mrs. Phillips, throughout these past few years, whether it was four or two, you have made a great impact on each and every one of the seniors in this graduating class. from “highs and lows” on Food Friday’s, to the early morning sell days, and the sta\" Christmas party; you have found a way to foster an amazing and relaxed environment for us. We truly could not have asked for a better advisor. It’s not every day that you have a teacher who commits so thoroughly to helping their students grow. #at’s who you have been for us. Someone who shares our passion for putting out the best possible magazine every month, someone who wants to help us tell the stories we are passionate about. It was always reassuring and refreshing to know that you were by our side throughout the whole process of publication. You pushed us to become the best writers and designers we could be, to give all of the time and e\"ort we could. You let us address our weaknesses and lean into our strengths, and above all, let us be ourselves. #at means the world to us, truly. #roughout the missed deadlines, unfortunate printing mishaps, and chaotic brainstorms, you have always been the calm to our storm, $nding the answers to all of our questions. we want to thank you for always believing in us and pushing us to grow and explore journalism, both within the high school and for many of us as a future career. Many of us would consider you an “in school mom”, which is a label perfectly $tting of your comforting and caring personality, you have been there for each and every one of us when we needed you to be, and for that we are so grateful. Not only have you made e\"orts for us within school, but outside of it too; getting to know each and every one of us while learning and caring about our lives outside of the classroom. While our journey with Courier is coming to an end, we all want you to know what a truly monumental impact you have le% on all of us with your peaceful presence and wisdom. Nõstälgîä6 | seniorcolumnist shiv majmudar | designer sakara rossWii1In trying to organize/deliver a piece about nostalgia for the feverdream/nightmare that was 2025/26, I’ve decided that I need to think pretty deeply about it. As in? What to include, what to exclude, what to mention, what to pass over. When a lot of people look back on their senior year one day, they might not remember the minutiae of the day-to-day, but they’ll remember what they watched, what they listened to, what horrendous trends wormed their way into our brains, and what is actually worth keeping. E v e n though a youth m o n o c u l t u r e died in the 90s, I’m still going to pretend like it exists. Here’s what everyone was talking about our senior year. What we will look back on with either fondness or disdain or a bit of both. Buckle up. MoviesBack in my comfort zone. I did this every month for a year and a half, so let’s get into it. I’ll do a bulleted list so this is easy to read (unlike that one-sentence article I did last issue…why did I do that?).— “Sinners” snapped up the Oscar for Best Screenplay, and arguably should have gotten a few more. It’s brilliantly directed, shot, acted, all of the above. But what makes it stand out (for me) is that it’s original, feels like a labor of love rather than something a studio demanded. Plus, vampires. — “K-Pop Demon Hunters” stole the charts and the screen. It’s still golden. — “Wicked: For Good” took people back to Oz. We got a lot of !ying monkeys, scarecrows and awkward press interviews. — “One Battle A\"er Another” won Best Picture. It’s supposed to be really, really good. Take it from the gold statue; I haven’t seen it. — I can’t wait for 2026 in movies. “Dune 3” and “#e Odyssey”, enough said. Music#is is what the world was listening to. As far as the charts go. If you’re alive and breathing, you’ve probably heard of these artists.– Bad Bunny had a banner year—a Grammy for Best Album, a SuperBowl hal\"ime show, Top Artist Globally.— Taylor Swi\" released an album in 2025, “#e Life of a Showgirl.” — #e Weeknd, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Sombr, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars all topped the charts this year. — Have to shout-out Arijit Singh, who became the $rst Indian artist to reach the Top 10 Most-Streamed. — #ere’s also the music you couldn’t escape at the dentist’s o%ce: “Ordinary” by Alex Warren and “Beautiful #ings” by Benson Boone. Both topped the charts last year. — Olivia Dean won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Deserved.— Artists such as BTS, Harry Styles, U2, Foo Fighters, Rihanna, Kanye (oh God no) and Olivia Rodrigo are dropping new albums in 2026!Culture at LargeEverything I’m about to mention makes me nostalgic for 2016. —Labubus —Katy Perry went to space, apparently. We also put people on the moon, too. Wait, did I forget to talk about “Project Hail Mary” in the movie section? Oh well. —AI SLOP. —Anything involving 6-7— “Performative males”— Matcha and quarterzips, respectively—What’s worse than brainrot? Italian brainrot.—#e Jet2 Holiday #ing— “Aurafarming”— “Looksxxxmaking” (how many Xs are there?)I’m only scratching the surface, I know. But I don’t think I can do this anymore. I’m already nostalgic enough, thanks. #ere you have it. What we will be nostalgic for some day. I can’t really $nd it in myself to feel that way right now, but time will do strange things to all of us. Anyway, that’s it. Have a great summer, reader. I’m out. Sat 05/2811:11 pm

In November 2022, ChatGPT was o!cially released for public use. It began to pick up popularity in early 2023 a\"er users shared positive experiences with the chatbot on social media. Now, it is utilized as a tool for multiple di#erent purposes including education and work. Schools and employers have started to set restrictions on AI usage. With the rise of ChatGPT, other AI platforms have also started to get popular, like Gemini and Blackbox AI. $rough the 2000’s, YouTube played a big part in the lives of adolescents. $ere were various di#erent trends and challenges that have come in and out of popularity. Slime making started to get popular in 2010 but really took o# near 2019 and 2020 during the pandemic. $ere would be ASMR compilations of YouTubers playing with slime and selling slime. Along with slime, there was an in%ux of other ASMR videos like keyboard typing, soap cutting, chalk eating and running things over with a car. During the summer of 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket challenge started as a way to bring ALS awareness (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). $e trend gained a lot of traction and was even done by many celebrities. $is trend returned in the summer of 2025, with people nominating and dumping cold ice buckets on each other’s head. senior | 7As the class of 2026 begins their &nal month in high school before venturing into the world to do great things, let’s take a moment to look through some of the monumental events that they’ve lived through, ranging from apps and trends that they made popular to global events that a#ected the course of their schooling.During the early 2010s, the word ‘cringe’ started to pop up on platforms like Tumblr and Reddit. $e word started to really take o# during the mid 2010s on YouTube where things like cringe compilations hit No. 1 on trending. In 2020, with the rise of TikTok, the word cringe was used to describe people who seemed to try too hard or had awkward behavior. $is led to the rise of cancel culture for in%uencers and users of social media, normalizing public apologies. Now in 2026, being cringe isn’t seen as an insult but as a mindset of being more free and self aware. In 2018, ByteDance bought popular app Musical.ly and rebranded it to TikTok. $e app really started to gain traction in late 2019, and its usage skyrocketed in early 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when many users were on lockdown. TikTok has since remained a popular app among Gen-Z and has had court cases to be banned in the United States. In January 2020, the &rst case of Covid-19 was discovered in the United States a\"er having originated during 2019 in China. $e outbreak of this virus put the world, including the United States, into lockdown. On March 13, 2020, it was declared a national emergency according to the CDC. Students had one week o# school, which turned into the rest of the school year, and a hybrid learning format for the next two years.
