EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION EXPLORING CREATIVITY Libbie Cowan Childcare Centre, Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool Centre & JK This year, the MNjcc Early Childhood Education (ECE) program joined many early childhood programs across the province opting into the Canada Wide Early Learning Child Care program (CWELCC). This program’s funding allows us to lower fees over a five-year period to $10-$12 per day – aligning with our values of providing affordable and inclusive education to families in our community. Our ECE programs continue to evolve, and this year, grew to include many program specialty enhancements: We introduced Suzuki violin lessons, giving our students a unique opportunity to use handson exploration to discover creative talents We built in swimming time for our ECE children, encouraging a positive and safe experience around water at an early age We provided amazing opportunities for the children in all our programs to use hands-on exploration to discover their interests in our Reggio Studio We added a new Hebrew engagement specialty, utilizing the Sheva framework to teach basic Hebrew language vocabulary and learn about Jewish holidays in a fun and accessible way Our talented ECE teachers and staff continued their critical work of keeping our curriculum dynamic, relevant, and enriching. This year we continued our investment in the growth of this core team, facilitating professional development days, offering training courses through a partnership with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), and working with the JCC Association and City of Toronto to tap into many virtual professional development opportunities to foster continuous learning for our team. 101 CHILDREN REGISTERED FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT THE MNJCC With gratitude for the foundational gifts of Thomas and Marjorie Schwartz, and to Harold and Shelley Wolkin for your generous support. z”l
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION EXPLORING CREATIVITY “The school has been such a high-quality experience for my daughters. It has continued to provide development, through caring teachers, with clarity to the parents every step of the way. My daughters come home feeling curious, eager for another day and most importantly, happy. Even in these difficult situations, it has been a relief to be in a school where we can be sure that all the measures are taken so our children can be as safe as possible. I highly recommend the full experience it offers and offer my deepest thanks to the administration and educators who create this positive experience for our family.”
INCLUSIVE JEWISH COMMUNITY CELEBRATING JOYFUL MOMENTS TOGETHER Lishma Learning Program Our Lishma program brings together students from diverse Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds to learn and explore new possibilities for deepened Jewish connection and engagement in an intimate and open environment. Lishma serves a diverse student population, and we continue to be in close relationship with our students, building our programming in response to their curiosities and passions. This year, there was great enthusiasm for our classes Tikkun-ing this Shattered Olam: Kabbalah 101, Controversy and the Jewish Tradition, and Tending the Jewish Garden. The intimate nature of the group means that we program nimbly, and our students regularly report that they feel we are meeting them where they are at, and not where we think they should be. This was a transitional year for the Lishma team, both with the introduction of two new staff members (Rabbi Eliza MacCaroll of Holy Blossom Temple, and Lauren Schreiber Sasaki of Miles Nadal JCC), and with the return to in-person learning. Downtown Israeli Connection Our Israeli Connection team has an important goal: creating opportunities for joyful connection and meaningful impact through inclusive celebrations of Jewish Life and Israeli culture. This year, our Israeli Connection programming brought our community together for performances that inspired empowerment and inclusivity, including: Three sold-out Leonard Cohen tribute concerts, with some 500 people in attendance Three performances of Chaverot Hachi Tovot (Best Friends), an Israeli play, at our Al Green Theatre, lay-led by professional artists from our community through our Hachibur Theatre program MORE THAN 800 PEOPLE AND 20 VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED THIS YEAR THROUGH OUR ISRAELI CONNECTION PERFORMANCE SERIES PROGRAMMING With thanks to Nani & Austin Beutel, The JB & Dora Salsberg Fund, UJA Federation, Mosaic United, and ICEJ Canada for their continued support.
INCLUSIVE JEWISH COMMUNITY CELEBRATING JOYFUL MOMENTS TOGETHER "Pride Shabbat was full of queers praying together, including full-blown adults who used to be my campers (for whom I was an adult queer role model), little queer kids (some of whom have queer parents), and people older than me (carrying Toronto queer Jewish history from before I was born). Tonight I felt myself in the middle of history, past and future, and felt certain than when I go to my grave one day, I'll know that I did my best and had an impact." Pride Shabbat The MNjcc fosters rich and diverse LGBTQ+ Jewish life in Toronto, providing queer Jews opportunities to gather, celebrate and thrive through dynamic programming focused on community, advocacy and inclusion work. Through our Pride programming this year, we worked hard with our community to provide important opportunities for exploring identities and finding belonging in an open, low-barrier-to-access, non-judgmental space. Our annual LGBTQ+ at the J Pride Shabbat dinner was a sold-out event, and one of 18 Pride events hosted by the downtown Jewish community. We shared a beautiful evening celebrating Pride together, led in a beautiful service by three queer clergy members – Kohenet Annie Matan, Rabbi Miriam Margles, and Aviva Chernick. The space then transformed into a beautiful rainbow of Shabbat tables complete with Pride and Trans Flag challah, candles, and a delicious dinner. We are endlessly grateful to everybody who participated, and who helped us create this space! MORE THAN 150 PEOPLE ATTENDED OUR SOLD-OUT PRIDE SHABBAT DINNER! With gratitude to our many Pride Shabbat sponsors for their generous support.

This year, more than 2,100 children and adults participated in our Freddie Shore Swim School and more than 100 community members joined us for our lifesaving, lifeguard, first aid and leadership programs, gaining confidence and self-esteem, and building lifelong skills. “My son’s instructor this session was so amazing and actually got him to feel comfortable in the water for the first time!”
ACCESS AND INCLUSION ELEVATING BELONGING Everyday Friends and Families Diversity and social inclusion are at the heart of what we do at the MNjcc. This year we continued to grow our award-winning programming for those with mobility, sensory, developmental and intellectual disabilities. Our successful social network program, Everyday Friends, expanded to include more participants ages 18-35 for a wide variety of fitness, social, and artistic activities. Our program grew to add a new stream, Everyday Families, designed as a structured forum for parents and caregivers of young adults with developmental disabilities to join peers facing the same concerns and challenges to share, learn, and advocate. ReelAbilities Film Festival Toronto The ReelAbilities Film Festival Toronto (RAFFTO) returned for another successful year, showcasing the best of Deaf and disability cultures through film and art, with our new Artistic Director Lora Campbell at the helm. Kicking off the festival with our Opening Night Silent Disco at the Bata Show Museum, the festival offered 9 panels and workshops where marginalized creatives spoke about the intersection of their disabilities as well as other identities and how they inform in their work. We held our inaugural Pitch Competition where a filmmaker was awarded all of the resources needed to make their next short film which will screen at our 2024 festival. We had over twenty applicants for the pitch competition and look forward to making it an event larger event next year with even more support for filmmakers. EVERYDAY FRIENDS PROGRAMMING EXPANDED TO 60 PARTICIPANTS – THE LARGEST COHORT SINCE ITS INCEPTION. RAFFTO’S MULTI-ACCESS SCREENING MODEL SAW MORE THAN 1,000 PARTICIPANTS JOIN IN PERSON AND VIRTUALLY FOR 29 SCREENINGS With gratitude for the generous support of the Wagner Green Family Trust, The Azrieli Foundation, United Way, Ruth Mandel – WHO GIVES FUND, Fran Odette, Gill Lefkowitz, the Ontario Caregiver Organization, and to our many RAFFTO sponsors.
ACCESS AND INCLUSION ELEVATING BELONGING "I like that the Everyday Friends program gives me the opportunity to be social and to do things that I wouldn’t necessarily do. I also like that this is an opportunity to connect with old friends and new friends. This social aspect is very important to me because I live by myself so I need to find social connections in other ways. I also enjoy that there is a vast range of activities that I can participate in."
ARTS AND CULTURE CONNECTION THROUGH CREATIVITY This year we continued to expand our cultural offerings, providing opportunities for our community to explore the arts, literature, and music that define our culture. Through educational programs, lectures, and workshops, we have fostered an environment where intellectual curiosity thrives. As we continue our recovery from the effects of the pandemic, our Al Green Theatre and bookings team have made great strides, and we continue to build resilience and strengthen our processes to emerge stronger than ever. We’ve increased our staff coverage, and our quick response time has allowed us to more nimbly respond to last-minute inquiries. Thanks to our strong team, nearly 80% of our rental spaces are booked through to the end of summer 2024, with bookings extending into 2025. Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture Presented in partnership with The Women’s Art Association of Canada, and generously sponsored by the Fingerhut/Metcalfe family, April 2023 marked the 2nd Annual Beverley Fingerhut Memorial Lecture, created to commemorate Beverley’s lasting legacy as a devoted community member and Lay Leader. Alexandra Epps, accredited lecturer for The Arts Society and Guide and Lecturer for Tate Modern and Tate Britain, taught 90 older adult and senior attendees about iconic Art Deco artist Tamara de Lempicka.
ARTS AND CULTURE CONNECTION THROUGH CREATIVITY Making Music Together From adult ukulele classes to a 65-singer pop choir performance, music at the J had us clapping, dancing and singing together all year along. In our 31st year of Suzuki music at the J, we continued our partnership with the Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool Centre and the Libbie Cowan Childcare Centre, providing weekly music classes through the Suzuki Early Childhood Education program. We were also able to provide Suzuki Music classes for the first time to participants ages 2.5 to 4 in the youngest units of our Summer JCamp. Learning music at such a young age has countless positive impacts for a child – from improved self-confidence to better communication skills – and we are so pleased to be able to provide a nurturing, non-competitive, and fun learning environment for our kids to learn new skills. For those who are slightly older than preschool age, music proved to be a way to continue to connect and combat isolation. Close to 100 seniors registered to enjoy the smooth & swingin’ hits of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. performed by The Jordan Klapman Quintet, in celebration of the Chanukah holiday, in our very own Al Green Theatre. For some, it was their first time back in our building in 3 years! This year also saw the return of a beloved monthly Friday afternoon tradition for the first time since 2020: Shabbat in Song. The sing-along sessions provided a number of joyful and spiritually uplifting concerts featuring songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and English performed by popular musicians, cantors, and Rabbis. 92 OLDER ADULTS AND SENIORS CAME TOGETHER FOR OUR SHABBAT IN SONG PROGRAM “Thank you so much for all the work and effort you put into tonight’s concert. It was our family’s first time and it was so lovely to hear the music and to see what a wonderful community this is.”
ENGAGEMENT AND PARTNERSHIP OUR COMMUNITY THRIVED TOGETHER Over the past year, the MNjcc collaborated with more than 200 diverse partners to support programs that connect people with their community. Many of our partners work closely with us to create communities of practice, serve as advisors, and give and receive training. Their ongoing support allows us to continue to deliver the diverse, dynamic, and inclusive programming available at the MNjcc and in the community. Thank you! 18Doors Accessible Media Inc.
