FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 . USIMToday NEWS / Campus The presense of a political person holding sessions with students at the university on the current of PRN is considered as a political agenda? This is the point the author is trying to make: not everything needs to be resisted right away; it should first be reviewed and evaluated. We must always uphold the values of open-mindedness as an undergraduate student and young people. At certain times, it’s necessary to mentally prepare ourselves to view a situation from a wider angle. We don’t necessarily have to disregard something’s virtues just because we don’t like it. When evaluating things, students must be rigorously critical. The author adopts a cool and truth-seeking attitude while being intrigued by the official statements and claims made by the student organisation by listening to and studying this fact from a broader and fairer point of view, i.e. listening to the arguments of both parties before conducting an assessment. After attending the “Temu Anwar” program with the students on last Saturday, the author believes that all of the discussions revolved around topics related to our country’s administration, such as the announcement of the financial budget and the 12th Malaysia plan. The prime minister also places a strong emphasis on the prospects for young people in higher education and post-graduation employment. Be modest in prejudice The subject of politics is rarely brought up by the prime minister, just sometimes if it is so closely linked to the nation’s current economic woes and the government’s management of policy implementation to enhance his speeches. The topic of discussion has nothing to do with urging the public to support a particular political party in an outrageous way which some students who joined the program were misinformed. The author reiterates the need for modest prejudice once again. When an intriguing issue emerges in today’s society, we do not always have to be the first to speak out against it without giving it careful consideration. By attempting to comprehend and investigate a subject from various perspectives, we can broaden our point of view. If it is true that there is a mistake, flaw, or negative effect, inform society in a way that is honourable, responsible, and acceptable. It excels at more than just writing in the virtual world or verbally protesting. This life has allowed us to help and motivate others. We all reside in the same country, a peaceful and diverse nation, so spread good, uphold the truth, and avoid inciting the enmity of our society. We must be tolerant of one another without giving up our rights. -Editor in Chief STUDENTS SHOULD LEARN EVENT MANAGING SKILLS AT UNIVERSITY The Dean of Fakulti Pengajian Quran dan Sunnah, Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd. STUDENTS PARK ILLEGALLY AT KK1 There were some students’ cars without parking stickers In Residential College 1. (Photo taken: Shahirah) The Security Department of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) previously made it mandatory for all USIM staff and students who drive their vehicles to campus to get a vehicle sticker by February 27, 2023. However, several students, particularly those in Kolej Kediaman 1 (KK1), still do not have stickers on their vehicles. Ulya Nafisah binti Abd Rahman, Perubatan Pergigian Dan Sains, 1, said that vehicle stickers are not provided to first-year students because they are not allowed to bring vehicles. “Other than the first year students are not allowed to bring vehicles to the campus, the procedure for applying for a vehicle sticker is complicated and difficult because it is necessary to prepare various supporting documents at the Office of the Student Affairs Division (BHEP), and only students receiving a confirmation stamp can get a sticker at the USIM Security Department. “Due to the somewhat complicated procedure, this is the reason why students are lazy to apply for vehicle stickers because it takes a long procedure to get it,” Ulya said. Block B Resident Fellow of KK1, Mohd Adam bin Yunus said that even though the administration does not permit first-year students to bring their cars, they do so illegally. “We will urge them to move the vehicles because unregistered vehicles are not permitted to park in the KK1 area. “We will report to the Security Department to make an operation to sue the students who do not have stickers on either motorbikes or cars,” Adam said. After receiving reports and complaints, the Security Department had done operations at KK1 to solve the issue. The Security Assistant, Mr. Azizy Bin Jamian, said that they have instructed the Student Representative Council (MPP) to issue a statement reminding first-year students that they are not permitted to bring vehicles without valid reasons and approval from the Principal of the Residential College. “ At KK1, the security division has conducted operations for three straight days. We will issue summonses if the students are still hesitant to apply for the vehicle sticker. “We will also lock the tires of the vehicles if the students continue to default, but we are lacking of car wheel clamps at it is fairly difficult to lock all the vehicles at the same time, but our side will sue repeatedly regardless of whether it is staff or students,” Azizy said. Recurring thefts occur at Kolej Acacia USIM NILAI: Recently, Kolej Kediaman Acacia experienced a theft issue at a female student dormitory. According to a student who lives there, Heba Shehab, Architecture, 3, this problem had occurred more than once before. “We are very concern of this issue because this theft case occurred three times within a week,” Heba said. She also expressed her opinion that the college has significant weaknesses in terms of safety and security, which puts the lives of its residents in danger, especially the females. “The safety is being improved, but so far only a small step has been made, which is the installation of door latches on the bathroom doors. “However, numerous additional measures are required to improve the security,” she said. She said that the college can make an access card ensuring that the main gate is accessible exclusively to residents there. According to Hostel Warden of Kolej Acacia, Ecik Muhammad Khairi, they also work on numerous preventative measures on a constant basis. “We fixed the CCTV, put in door latches, and asked the police to patrol frequently,” he said. According to him, because Kolej Acacia is located outside the university area, they do not have the same level of security as colleges within the university area. “We hope that, with all of these enhanced security measures, this incident will not reoccur,” he said. Shaarani, thinks that USIM students are too homogenous and naive. According to him, the environment at USIM and the activities students participate in lead to a homogenous environment. “USIM alumnus said that students here are too naive and I agreed on it too. “I tried to understand why this connotation was given to USIM students, and what I found was that student environment is very homogenous,” he said. Dr. Sharifudin said one possibility of this situation is because the majority of students at USIM are from religious school backgrounds. “This type of schools usually will separate between the male and female students, so maybe this is one of the reasons why this happened,” he said. He also expressed his concern for USIM students, who will face the challenges and compete with others once they graduate. “Once you graduate, the environment will not be the same anymore, it will be very vicious,” he said. Commenting on this topic, Dr. Sharifudin wants to encourage students to get along and socialize with everyone. “I am not telling the students to over socialize. What I am saying is that students need to interact with people in order to develop social skills that benefit them,” he said. He said this in the program ‘Jom Brisk Walk’ with the Vice Chancellor, which was attended by lecturers, staff, and students in USIM. Dr, Sharifudin also expressed his gratitude and happy for the enthusiasm and cooperation of all those who have been involved with this program. “Alhamdullillah, although this is for the first time but it is well received and we will organize more programs like this in the future,” he said. Dr Muhammad Raqib listens to the students’ presentation. THREE FKP LECTURERS SELECTED AS EVALUATORS FOR THE UM MASTER’S STUDENT PROJECT Three seniors lecturers from Fakulti Kepimpinan dan Pengurusan were selected as external examiners for the Momentus 2023 showcase at Universiti Malaya from 5th until 6th of June 2023. Dr Muhammad Raqib Mohd Sofian, Dr Suria Hani A. Rahman, and Dr Safiyyah Ahmad Sabri, all from the Communication Programme of Fakulti Kepimpinan dan Pengurusan (FKP), were the three expert examiners from USIM. Momentus is a creative project with the theme “Connecting with Nature” undertaken by students in the Master of Media Studies (MMS) program at the Department of Media and Communication Studies at UM. One of the students who attended the showcase, Tasyamin Khalish, Komunikasi, 3, said that the showcase was very interesting because it attracted people with interactive games such as throwing a ball into a hole, a quiz about nature, and other activities. “As we were gaining knowledge about nature, we also received prizes for winning the games we played there,” Tasyamin said. Dr. Suria Hani, one of the examiners, on the other hand, mentioned the language difficulties among the Chinese students at UM, which caused the evaluator problem during the presentation session. “I had to ask a few times to understand what they wanted to explain. “I think for international students, it is essential to master the English Language while being able to learn the local language. Moreover, a moderate level of English is enough to start learning; however, they need to make improvements as they progress,” Dr. Suria said. Meanwhile, another examiner, Dr Safiyyah, also agreed with Dr Suria that language barrier is one of the biggest challenges because almost all the students she needs to assess are Chinese and Indian students. “Time constraint is also a major challenge because I have to read 5-6 reports in one day, most of each report contain around 100 pages. “With the short amount of time and the noisy and non-conducive environment, the evaluation process becomes even more difficult,” Dr Safiyyah said. According to Executive Director of CMCF, Mediha Mahmod said that the objective of this forum is to address that many viral religious issues have been debated on social media without confirmation from those who are experts. “This forum is a platform to provide explanations and. enlightenment to the community from experienced and qualified panel members,” Mediha Mahmod said Meanwhile, one of the members of Content Forum and a lecturer at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Dr. Nur Kareelawati Abd Karim, this program was also a collaboration between Content Forum and USIM through the involvement of 3rd year communication students. “This collaboration has started since 2022 with a total of 81 students in year 3 involved in organizing the Communication and Satellite program of the Creative and Cultural Industry Consortium,” Dr. Kareeelawati said. According to one of the participants of this program, Nazirah Md Zaid, this forum has helped her see the truth about the viral religious issues that were previously only discussed based on a public perspective. However, with the presence of experts who explained briefly and concisely, this perspective has been corrected. “Young people now don’t like going to this kind of forum because the context is heavy, but the concept of this forum is more relaxed with the presence of celebrities who liven up the program,” Nazirah said. USIM student sexually harassed by foreigner in Desa Jati 2 NILAI: A female student from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) was sexually harassed when she was taking a lift to go back to her house around 12.00pm on 4th July 2023. According to the victim, Aisyah (not real name), Perakaunan, 3, at that time she was taking the lift alone from level G to her house in level 5. Then a foreign man stopped the lift and entered also. “At first I didn't have any issues. But when I wanted to get out of the lift, the man touched my body at the back,” Aisyah said. She was surprised at that time and hurriedly ran towards her house. Luckily nothing happened to her. Many rooms had been reported to be ambushed by the monkey, making the rooms dirty and smelly with the blood from its injured tail. According to the Timbalan Pengerusi of Jawatankuasa Siswa/i (JAKSA) KK1, Khairatul Najah, only the big monkey resides around the block, unlike other monkeys living in the forest. “Monkeys always disturb in the morning and evening, then return to the forest before night. “But this monkey seems to be staying inside the block because of its injury and also disturbs at night,” she said. Based on the report of a student residing in KK1, Nur Afiqah Natasha, the monkey had made a mess in her room one night. “It was a total disaster, and I cannot forget the incident. “Even though I had closed my door and windows, still the monkey can get in. “My bed, table, and prayer attire become dirty because of the monkey,” she said. Luckily the monkey has successfully been caught after being trapped in a room with the help of JAKSA and residents in Block E. “Some students secretly give food to the monkeys and do not handle the trash properly, which attracts the monkeys. “We assume this because only a few monkeys can be spotted around the campus during the semester break,” he said. USIMToday . FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 NEWS / Vox Pox STUDENTS FACE DISCOMFORT DUE TO CONSTRUCTION WORK AT FKP The construction work being carried out at the Fakulti Kepimpinan dan Pengurusan (FKP) had caused various problems for the students. The construction aims to upgrade the air-conditioning devices throughout the faculty. However, the construction has caused several difficulties, especially for the students, as it is obstructing their path to attend classes. According to Muhammad Ikhwan Aiman Bin Iwan Kerisnawan, Fakulti Quran dan Sunnah, 3, the construction activity has restricted the movement of students. “This construction does not pose a significant risk, but it disrupts students’ activities and causes discomfort, particularly for those who bring vehicles such as cars and motorcycles that must pass through dusty roads. “I hope that the construction process will be carried out carefully and can be completed quickly,” Ikhwan said. In addition, Nurul Nabilah Binti Ramli, Fakulti Syariah dan Undang-Undang, 3, also expressed concerns about the construction as it could damage students’ vehicles that pass through it. “There are several risks due to the construction, as the potholed road condition can easily damage vehicles and also gets dirty due to the dust that results from their excavation,” Nabilah said. Moreover, she really hoped that the construction on the main road could be done as soon as possible. In addition, Nurul Farhana Husna Binti Ahmad, Fakulti Kepimpinan dan Pengurusant, 3, also shared a problem she faced, which was having to park her vehicle far from the faculty. “The construction being carried out is indeed inconvenient because I have to park my vehicle at the cafe and USIM students required to take online classes due to air conditioner problem The pipe connection work at Fakulti Syariah dan Undang-Undang. Consequently, students have to attend classes online for at least 4 weeks. Some lecterurs and students are frustrated because they have to do online learning and they are not comfortable with the air conditioner problem. We interviewed various lecturers and students to gather their feedback. According to Dr Is’haq Ibrahim Ahmad Bani Melhem, a lecturer in the Faculty of Leadership and Management, the only option for lecturers to resume the learning session is through online classes. “Other than online classes, the faculty management can offer alternative solutions for lecturers to having physical classes by scheduling classes during the teaching and learning period. “It supposed to be done when students are on their break because we are nearing the end of the semester so it interrupts the learning sessions,” she said. walk far through FPQS to go to classes in hot and dusty weather, compared to before, when I only needed to park at FKP,” Farhana said. Tajuk Clickbait: Malas membaca menimbulkan kekeliruan Oleh NUR ALYA ATHIRAH BINTI SHAFIK DAN DR. Filem "Mentega Terbang" mencetuskan kontroversi, mencemarkan imej agama Islam USIMToday . USIMToday . Gambar sekadar hiasan. 18
Strange Experiences Throughout the Journey as a Grave Digger The image of Awie after completing the grave digging. The weary face portrays the fatigue of a grave digger named Mohd Sobri Bin Mohammad, who is 56 years old. A native of Lenggong, Perak, he is also a coffee shop owner and the muezzin at the Masjid Ar-Rahmaniah in Gunung Semanggol. Originally, Mohd Sobri, affectionately known as Awie, merely filled in for one of the grave diggers in the Gunung Semanggol congregation. This was because the Mosque Chairman had already ap pointed three permanent grave diggers. Awie reminisces about the first time he was approached by the mosque committee to work as a grave digger in 2008. “One day, the Funeral Charity Committee, Imam Nasir, and Mr. Zaini came to my shop asking for my help in grave digging work. “This was because Mr. Zakaria, who was old and had health problems, was often unable to perform his duties as a gravedigger. “After thinking it over several times, I finally agreed to accept their invitation to replace Mr. Zakaria,” he explained while sipping his hot coffee. Since then, Awie has actively been involved as a grave digger up until now. Digging graves is not as easy as the public may think. The grave digger is currently digging a grave for a new burial in the Gunung Semanggol cemetery. The image is an illustration of the difference between graves without coffins and those with coffins. However, this work does not feel awkward to Awie because it is not his first time being involved as a gravedigger. “I have been involved in this work long before I moved to Gunung Semanggol. “Previously, I worked and lived in Gerik, Perak, where whenever there was a death in the village or the local community, we would all join together to prepare the graves because it has become a tradition to help one another when faced with adversity,” he said. He also described his initial feelings when he first became involved in grave digging, stating that it was not enjoyable because such work is not liked by many. However, despite the lack of enjoyment, it falls under the category of Fardu Kifayah, which makes it obligatory when no one else is willing to take responsibility for carrying out this task. Strange Experiences As a gravedigger, one cannot escape encounters with mystical occurrences and strange stories that are often experienced by grave diggers. Awie, too, has personally experienced some mystical encounters. He also shared strange stories he has encountered and how he dealt with those situations. “There are many stories I could share, but not all of them, as I still respect the privacy of the deceased. “I want to recount these strange experiences so that everyone can learn from this true story,” the 58-year-old grave digger said. Strange Story: The Burning Grave There is a strange story that Awie and the other grave diggers experienced when they came across a burning grave in the Gunung Semanggol cemetery. “One quiet morning, Imam Nasir informed me that there was a new body to be buried. As usual, we prepared all the necessary equipment for the digging work. “During the digging process, as most of the area in this cemetery had sandy soil, we used a 1-meter-long iron rod to probe the ground to determine if there was an existing old coffin buried there. If we encountered it, we would move to another spot,” he added. According to him, the cemetery area was layered, with older graves beneath without any markings. It was their practice to probe the ground with the sharpened end of an iron rod. If the probed area made contact, it meant it already had an occupant, and they would search for a new spot. “There were instances where, while probing to ensure the selected spot was empty, we still discovered a body inside. This happened because the original coffin had already deteriorated inside. So, we would cover it back and find a new grave spot nearby,” Awie said. The cemetery area at the Ar-Rahmaniah Mosque used coffins made of plywood. Some were even made from floorboards, as they took a long time to decay and had strong durability. Awie also explained the difference between graves that use coffins and those that do not. Graves that do not use coffins are called “Liang Lahat,” which means the area is hilly and dry. These types of graves require the expertise of the grave digger to break through the dug soil walls to place the body inside. Liang Lahat occupies a relatively large space and takes extra time to create. Graves that use coffins do not require much effort and can be completed in a shorter amount of time since the grave digger does not need to break through the grave walls to place the body. Once the location is identified, the digging work commences with Imam Nasir. “During the first excavation, nothing strange happened, but when I continued the digging until knee-level, suddenly, I saw burnt black soil resembling fertilized soil. We then excavated and removed the black soil,” Awie explained, his face wrinkling. During the process of removing the soil, we smelled a strong odour similar to the scent of something burnt. However, as we continued to level the grave floor, I noticed the remains of a charred and withered coffin board, resembling charcoal. We moved the board aside and continued the digging until it was completed. Such a phenomenon never occurred again throughout Awie’s tenure as a gravedigger. According to him, he also asked Imam Nasir about the occupant of that grave, but it turned out to be an unmarked old grave. “Truly, during that incident, I was shocked and believed that Allah SWT had bestowed His servant with sustenance and a reminder of the reality of the punishment of the grave,” the elderly grave digger said. The incident that took place in the cemetery remains fresh in Awie’s memory and has brought him a deep sense of reflection, especially as a grave digger. Nonetheless, the burial work continues as usual because it is a task entrusted to him. FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 . USIMToday People / LIFESTYLE 19
USIMToday . FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 LIFESTYLE / People Mrs. Amilin got her new second car from Tupperware Brands Malaysia as a free gift in 2022. Mumdream is one of the earliest boutique businesses that focus on Muslim pregnant women. Before the existence of this business, a lot of pregnant dresses were designed with short sleeves and eye-catching which do not suitable for Islamic teaching. So, I interviewed the owner of Mumdream, Mrs. Amilin who is also a businesswoman with five children. Thanks, Mrs. Amilin, for welcoming me as to interview you. Can Mrs. Amilin Tell me what makes you inspired to focus on the business world? It happened when I was breastfeeding my second child in 2006. I searched for any Muslimah pregnant mom dress, but unfortunately, none were there. Only dresses were designed for non-Muslim pregnant moms, which are not covering the aurah at the time. So, when I think about it, why not start running a business that focuses on Muslimah pregnant women? It may be weird for the first time because none of the boutique businesses focuses on Muslim pregnant moms. Many believed that the business could not hold much longer, but for me, it is a challenge to prove them wrong and could grow up the business. In 2007, I started to run my business, Mumdream with six dresses made by a tailor using my own design. Designing is not my talent, but I try to do it because of my passion and interest in creating Muslimah pregnant moms’ dresses that cover the aurah. For the starter, I used an online platform called Photopages (an old website that no longer exists). Only a moment after I posted the dresses in Photopages, a customer contacted me to buy a dress. I was really happy at the time. About a year later, I opened my first boutique shop in Bangi. Now, millions of dresses had been ordered from China which follow the design that I made. Other than Mumdream, what business do you do as backup? I joined Tupperware to learn about their system, but as time consumed, I was already on the level of getting a car as a reward. This made me wonder which business I needed to focus on more whether my business boutique or Tupperware. “I already achieved my goals in joining Tupperware. Why should I continue it?” I thought by myself one day. So, I made istikharah (a specific prayer for asking for the best choice) many times before I could get a solid answer. I also got a lot of persuasion from my down liners to keep insisting I stay in the Tupperware business but I still not get any solid answer yet. I even gave all of my commission from Tupperware to the charity hoping Allah to give me the answer other than performing istikharah. Later, I earned a Honda Jazz and free trips from Tupperware which made me think that I should keep running this business. Apart from Mumdream and Tupperware, I also own four homestays in an apartment nearby IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. I am thinking to add more units of homestay because I aim to have a total of ten homestay units. But after this, I am searching to make homestays in another place because some of the apartment’s residents do not approve of my action by making homestays there. They complained about the behaviors of the customers that did not respect the community like making noise and not fully obeying the rule especially when using the pool. I am thinking to search for any available spot to make homestays that is nearer to my home. So, I studied about the marketplace for my homestays from my uncle, who is also a senior in managing homestay. Many businesses had been affected during the pandemic, what impact does the pandemic gave on your business? Bangi still operates until now to do the packaging as people were demanding more on online platforms than a walk-in. I felt so heartbroken to see my business’s progress at the time. Luckily, I still had my Tupperware business, which is still ongoing as the demands are quite high. People began to realize they did not have enough containers to store their food during the pandemic, so they bought them from Tupperware. Alhamdulillah, this is one of the plans from the Merciful of Allah for making me stay in the Tupperware business so that I can still do business during the pandemic. I heard that the Tupperware business will close soon. What is your action after hearing this rumor? There are some rumors about Tupperware is going to close soon. But it does not affect me because as long as the products still exist, I will keep selling them. If the products are already out of stock and stop production, I will search for another business opportunity. A business owner always needs to find opportunities to grow up their business. As a person who has a lot of experience in the business The demand for pregnant moms’ dresses dropped drastically because people did not leave home during the pandemic. So, they did not need to wear any pregnant dresses as they do not step outside. We only got sales from products that specialize for women in the abstinence period. These affected my busines, so I had to close all of the business branches, which are located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Sungai Buloh, Shah Alam and Klang. Only the headquarter in Mrs. Amilin Husin and his husband, Mr. Mohd Faizal already discuss the matter of their house management so she can focus on doing her business. Whether it is a short-term or long-term goal, you must make it clear and achievable. world, what is your advice for other business owners? Know your goals when doing your business. Many businessmen seem to have a huge amount of money but do not have a clear goal in their business life after successfully collecting the money. Whether it is a short-term or long-term goal, you must make it clear and achievable. Goals are not static, and you could change the goals depending on time. You should do what you can do not what you are interested only. Even though you do business with what you are interested in, the business cannot guarantee success. If we do not have knowledge in one field but know we can do it, we will double up our effort to learn them. The determination on learning the field makes us different from those who already know the field. We should not apply sentimental value to our business if we know the business cannot hold much longer. Based on my observation and experience in business, I saw many Malays cannot leave out their collapsed business because of its sentimental value to them. They were afraid of what people would say to them and felt the place had many memories for them. That is why we should not hear what people say to us. What is important are, we need to know our strength and the actions that give us good benefits and results. “ Focus three businesses at the same time 20
do something for USIM. I never imagined that I would become MPP before my third year while entering USIM during the Covid-19 pandemic and not knowing USIM yet. I also had a target to achieve something for myself, but now, with the hope and support of the people who voted me as MPP, it made me feel called to take on this position and be responsible for it. Do you have a position in other associations besides MPP? Before becoming MPP, many offered me to become the president of the club, but I declined because I wanted to focus on myself. However, after becoming YDP MPP, I only left one club, which is the Persatuan Mahasiswa Anak Jati Terengganu (PERMATA) and held the position of Vice President. How do you manage your time with various activities and associations that you are involved in? For me, so far, it is still bearable because in PERMATA, I am just a Vice President and sometimes I even collaborate on programs between PERMATA and MPP. If I can divide my time, on a scale of 1-10, I can divide 6 for MPP, 1 for PERMATA, and 3 for studying. In addition, my GPA is currently 3.83, where I feel that all the activities and associations that I am involved in do does not hinder my learning because academic performance is still a top priority. Can you explain a little about MPP’s work? In general, MPP is a mediator between the management and students. The MPP job scope depends on each of their positions where each exco has their own “parents”, such as the Exco Kerohanian working with Pusat Islam, Exco Kebajikan Pusat Wakaf dan Zakat, and so on with other exco who have their own “parents”. Although MPP is a middleman between management and students, students also have the right to voice their opinions either through MPP or Dewan Syura Siswa. For information, Dewan Syura Siswa is held on June 17th and 18th, and student feedback will be discussed in the Dewan Syura Siswa. How does YDP Handle Students Stigma Against MPP? My principle, if someone critWhat contribution did YDP make to USIM? With a short amount of time, there wasn’t much I could do. However, what I urged to the MPP was, “If you can’t do everything, then don’t leave everything.” What I have done is focus on “reviving” existing facilities such as futsal courts and netball courts. For me, repairing existing facilities is more important than acquiring new ones. We all have our own strategies and work, some may be active outside of campus and some not. Prior to becoming the MPP, my plan was to be active outside of campus by giving talks, etc. However, once I became the MPP, I had to focus on the students because it was my duty. Thus, my hope for students is to explore the world because our youth is our asset, and this time is our golden age to explore. Avoid the 3Ks ‘kuliah, kafe, katil’. I hope that everyone has their own life goals because many of us feel like we have no value when in fact every human being has value within themselves. “We are who we are, and we do not need validation from others to say we are great. If we know we are great, that’s enough!” “Just go with what we have, if there is something that does not align with what we plan, actually it is the best for us.” This is the life principle of Yang Di-Pertua Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar, Shamsul Aiman Mua’mar Bin Shamsul Bahrin, who was born in Terengganu and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bahasa Arab dan Kesusateraan Islam in USIM. In an interview with journalism student, Alya Athirah, he explained that what we plan in this world may not necessarily be given by God, but in fact what Allah gives is the best for us compared to what we already plan. Thank you to YDP MPP Shamsul Aiman for agreeing to be interviewed. Can you tell a little bit about why you are interested in becoming MPP? Leadership has been taught to me since I was young. My mother and father taught me discipline from a young age as well as to help others. Holding the position of Yang DiPertua MPP is not a commendation or an important thing in my life. However, with more than 7,000 votes, it placed me as their hope and made me realize that I need to icizes the MPP, look at what is being criticized. If they have proof that can prove that criticism, I will accept it with an open heart. But if the criticism is baseless and without a purpose, I will not entertain it because whether we are MPP or not, we are qualified to voice our opinions. In addition, at the age of 18, we can vote and give suggestions in the cabinet, so there is no limitation on anyone’s voice to express their opinions and suggestions. There is an issue where students complain that MPP is too busy that they cannot reply to whatsapp. What is your comment as YDP? What I can say is, MPP is also a student, and sometimes, they may overlook things because many people contact or complain to them. For example, Exco Kebajikan dan Keselamatan is divided into transportation, welfare, and security and facilities. They have different job scopes. So, if there is an issue or something that a student asks about related to that issue, it is a crucial thing for them because they handle it themselves. To solve this issue, usually, students will directly ask me, and I will immediately call them to help resolve whatever I can. "We are who we are." FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 . USIMToday . FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 LIFESTYLE / Travel Back To Nature At Lukut “If he doesn’t wake up at 9 am, we will just go.” We were supposed to leave at 8:30 am, but one of our friends still didn’t wake up. Literally, we start the journey with a little grievance because we cannot reach him. But after a few tries, he finally woke up so we are ready to have some adventures! The morning weather is a bit scorching. Although it is only 9 o’clock in the morning, it is a bright ray of sunshine. We set the maps to our destination at Lukut, Negeri Sembilan. An hour’s drive will be very exciting right? Along the street, many trees were planted on both sides. It’s absolutely breathtaking to see the village’s wooden houses and lush gardens along the way as the eyegasm. The extremely quiet road makes this trip very rejuvenating. Uncle Wong happy farm located at Lukut, Negeri Sembilan is a farm that provides outdoor and adventurous activities to try. It is just 15 minutes away from Port Dickson and from Nilai, an approximately 1-hour drive. This place was originally a bee farm. The owner’s been beekeeping for more than 10 years. Due to the MCO, he planned to venture into tourism so he came out with an ATV, kayak and paddle boat. But he still has the bee nests at the farm to keep the originality of it. Surrounded by the rich and variegated natural landscape, the farm is encircled by stunning, inviting lush greenery. As we walked around the sweeping area, we inhaled deeply and enjoyed the earthy and refreshing air. Stepping inside, we are welcomed by one of the staff, with a bountiful smile, who tells us to look around first. At one of the desks, there was an old man, in his mid-50s, sitting there looking at his phone. This farm had a total of 3 staff. After we looked around, we had some conversations with one of the staff, Mr. Zenhao. We questioned him briefly about the operations and history of the farm. Hearing that Uncle Wong, the owner of this farm, was the elderly man from earlier caught everyone off guard because he seemed A group of teenagers riding ATV A smile of satisfaction enjoying the moment of fresh air in the morning while kayaking. like one of the tourists. While listening to the explanation of Mr. Zenhao, our eyes are always looking toward the vast artificial lake. The lake is clean and the color looks clear green. We could see small fish swimming in it. Without thinking long, we continued to choose to start our first activity by kayaking and paddle boating in this lake. This is our first-time doing water activity and we are very excited. Just a few steps down to the jetty near this lake, we were greeted by another worker with a friendly smile, who helped us put on life jackets before starting the activity. This was our first experience of kayaking. The feeling of excitement overcame the fear of the water. We felt incredibly peaceful when the kayak we were in moved through the water of this lake. Apart from looking at the lush vegetation surrounding the lake, our eyes were also presented with the beauty of the wide-open sky and a flock of swans swimming together. After a half hour of kayaking around the lake, we took a rest for a while right in the center of the lake. We felt so peaceful at that time listening to the sound of air entering our ears. As we took a rest, we realized the majesty and beauty of Allah’s creation. This magnificent sight serves to demonstrate the greatness of Allah and inspire gratitude and humility in people. Then, we felt like reached the kayaking time limit so we decided to go back to the jetty. “Just play, just play,” uncle Wong said. We were very touched with uncle Wong’s order. The activity was infrequently possible, so we grab the chance to enjoy it. Time flies so fast that we don’t realize we have spent about 1 hour on the surface of the water appreciating the beauty of nature. We didn’t ride the ATV but there are tourists that ride it and they seem very happy. But we are taking pictures with the ATV. The ATV have its levels. The different of it is the times. For the advance ride, the ride is on an exciting jungle track with the estimated times 60 minutes. Afterward, we decided to look around to see what is the main attraction at Uncle Wong. We saw some beehives that were called ‘lebah madu kelulut’ in Malaysia. The easy word to understand is sweet honey. The bees were hard-working like ants. Both of them were doing it with one purpose which is for their beloved queen. Not only that, but we also walked around and found a pond. At first, we thought that the pond was empty with nothing inside it. Our eyes stared anxiously observing the muddy water. After taking a few seconds we only noticed that the pond was full of tortoises. Some of the tortoises were swimming in the pond and some of it was chilling while sunbathing with their gang. Before we call it a day, we take pictures with Uncle Wong at the signboard area at the entrance where his name is written as the memories. We are all photographed with the staff member’s gracious offer, with an expansive smile, who always requests us to shoot photos in different styles and places. We had a ball at the Uncle Wong Happy Farm while on this trip. Despite the close proximity, we enjoyed it immensely. As a first-timer doing such activities, this will be a delightful memory for us. As students, we are not only creating memories of our education, but we are also collecting memories that are memorable outside the campus. We will remember the odor of green grass, a delicate breeze, and the relaxing river water ambient sound. On the way home, everyone is hungry after having enjoyable activities. So, we stopped at the “Haji Lalu Restaurant” for lunch. The main dish in the restaurant is Nasi Kandar with numerous dishes we can choose from. Actually, Liyana is a bit of a chatterbox at the restaurant talking about the farm. We intended to return home to rest after eating, but we think it is still noon. So, why don’t we go to some places where we can spend some money? Faris then decided to drive us to Alamanda, Putrajaya. We went into many stores but did not buy anything. After a few minutes of deliberation, Faris purchased blueberry-flavored donuts, so he is over the moon. We decided to go home after 2 hours. Faris took us on a walk around Putrajaya to relieve stress from the numerous assignments. Surely, Putrajaya would be our next destination for our next retreat. 22
Resort Beside Banting Road Have you ever wondered about visiting a place that you saw on TikTok? We also felt the same thing. So we visited Tadom Hill Resort at Banting, Selangor, which one of us found while scrolling TikTok. At first, we thought of booking two chalets there for one night via the website. But it seems not worth it because it is only 30 minutes from our place, Nilai. So we planned to visit there for only a day with a group of four: Irfan, Alya, Ayuni and myself, Akif. We departed from Nilai at 9.20 a.m. and reached there around 10 o’clock. Our trip went smoothly because only a few cars were on the road. I don’t expect this place to be here,” I said at first after seeing a signboard written “Tadom Hill Resort” beside the main road. We thought the resort would be deep inside a village because there are a lot of chalets and activities provided, based on the Tiktok video and the website. But the place is only beside the main road to Banting. We slowed down our turquoise Kelisa and entered the dirt road connected with the main road. The scenery was mesmerizing. We spotted a small hill, a lake and some bamboo huts. But there were no other people besides our car as we arrived there. “Maybe we came a bit too early,” we all have the same thought. We ventured further around the place and found a group of cars parked neatly in one place. Without further ado, we parked the car in an empty spot. The first thing we saw as we stepped out of the car was a huge wooden gate entrance with “Tadom Hill Resort” carved in the middle. We went there and found a counter desk below the gate entrance. “Do we need to register here?” Ayuni asked a staff member at the counter desk. “Yes. You need to pay RM10 for the entrance only, with no activities, and it is only valid for an hour. “But if you want to include some activities around here, you need to pay RM20, which is valid for the whole day,” the staff explained. Then she pointed at a whiteboard containing the list of activities that could be done around the resort. We took some time to decide because Alya and Ayuni fear water activities. So it would be a waste if the RM20 package had been taken but did not enjoy the activities. Irfan and I took the RM20 package to experience the activities around the resort, especially water activities, while Ayuni and Alya took the RM10 package to walk Visitors are riding bamboo rafts around the lake. Go Kart is one of the activities provided there besides archery, ATV and flying fox. around the resort and discover the facilities and lodgings provided there. After settling with the payment, the staff wore a bracelet in different colours depending on our chosen package. We walked into the main entrance and felt astonished by the surroundings. There were many visitors besides us and also some foreigners walking around the resort. “Let’s try the coconut shake after this,” Irfan said after noticing a coconut shake signboard near the entrance. Irfan and I returned to the car to get our bag containing extra clothes and a towel before doing any water activities. A couple with a baby was walking toward their car, which had been parked nearby us. We had the chance to chitchat with the husband for a while. They just checked out from the resort and told us they enjoyed their short vacation here. After that, we returned to the main entrance, where the other two were waiting. Healing with Water We walked toward a security hut at the side of the lake. The security told us to take a life jacket and leave our bag in a basket in front of the hut. After that, Alya and Ayuni left us and walked around the resort to see their lodgings and facilities. The life jackets come in all sizes. Both of us took life jackets and went to the wooden port. Several visitors were already at the lake. At the count of three, we jumped down from the port. Plop. It was cold initially, but our bodies could adjust to the temperature afterward. We kept our bodies floating for a while in the lake before swimming toward a tree at the lake shore with a swing and a wooden diving platform. “Akif, you go jump there. I’m scared,” Irfan said when he saw the wooden diving platform was about 3 meters. I climbed onto the tree by the wooden stair that had been prepared. Irfan waited at the bottom of the tree. Two Chinese women were already at the tree but did not have the courage yet to jump. So they gave way for me to jump first from the diving platform. The jump created a big splash. People at the lake clapped as they watched me make a backflip in midair. FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 . USIMToday Travel / LIFESTYLE 23
USIMToday . FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2023 LIFESTYLE / Travel After I jumped a few times, we went back to the port via the ground path that connected with the stairs at the tree. This time we want to ride the bamboo raft. We asked the lifeguard if we could ride one because we did not see anyone riding the raft by the lake. “How far can we ride this raft?” we asked. “You can ride it as far as you can around this lake,” one lifeguard explained while waiting for another lifeguard to prepare the raft for us by the port. We needed to balance our bodies as we rode onto the raft. The lifeguard then gave us a wooden paddle for each of us to paddle the raft. We paddled as far as we could from other people and rested a while on the raft because paddling the raft used much energy. People rode the rafts after seeing us ride one. Maybe they did not know about the raft’s activity. While resting on the raft, we saw a group of visitors riding flying fox across the lake. They rode down from a hill to the lakeshore. We paddled back to the lakeshore and passed the paddles to the lifeguards. There was some conversation between us with the lifeguard after that. They told us that the lake is about five to photo,” she warned. We were a bit shocked because most Malaysians are good when strangers take photos of them and make some poses. Maybe the foreigners had their own rule regarding strangers. We only had a little conversation with the white woman because she seemed uncomfortable with us. “Ayuni! Take my picture!” Alya shouted and asked Ayuni to take her picture while playing with a floral swing nearby. A mini playground that was made of bamboo is also provided as an attraction for children. It has a slide with a grass mat, a swing and a short little bridge. The parents need to be cautious when letting their children play in the mini playground because it is a little high for them and they may risk falling from the little bridge. Also visible was a group of girls who were having a picnic by themselves under a shady tree near the lake. That was aesthetic! This shows that the resort has spacious areas, allowing visitors to do many activities around the resort. Replenish the Energy We headed to the cafe to grab lunch as our stomachs growled loudly. A serene environment surrounded the cafe. We picked a table with a perfect view of the tranquil lake and made ourselves comfortable. After flipping through the menu prepared on the table, we decided to try a few dishes and drinks. Unfortunately, the cafe was busy preparing a buffet, and only certain cuisine was available. Each of us ordered different dishes based on the menu as we could exchange our dishes. Later, the waiter returned and told us that some of our dishes were unavailable because of the lack of ingredients. So we needed to change for another dish that piqued our interest. The sight of a group of students from Universiti Malaya doing team-building activities. seven meters deep. Alya and Ayuni were already waiting for us by the lakeshore. We put back the life jacket and took our bag from the basket. After both of us changed our clothes, Alya and Ayuni showed us around the resort based on what they had explored while we were enjoying the water activities. Bamboo, Bamboo and Bamboo As I mentioned, we planned to stay one night here, but we forfeited the plan because the prices are not affordable and expensive for students. It made us curious why they put the price. After reaching here, we learned the reason for the expensive price. We could see that all the facilities and lodgings here are made of bamboo. What surprised us, even more was that the drain also had been carved to look like real bamboo, even though it was made of ceramic. While strolling around the resort, we found a group of international students from Kuala Lumpur doing their activities under a big round bamboo hut. It was a rare sight, so we took photos of them. Before we could capture any photo, a white woman, who seemed to be their teacher, approached us. “Sir, you cannot take the We also ordered refreshing drinks such as watermelon juice, coconut shake, and orange juice to beat the heat. We were excitedly awaiting our lunch. While we were chatting to one another, the waiter finally arrived and delivered our dishes. But unlike Irfan’s lunch, it arrived late, which made him upset. What made it worse was that his drink had been served with another drink. The dishes we have in the café to regain our energy. All the huts was made by bamboo. What surprised us even more was that the drain also had been carved to look like real bamboo, even though it was made of ceramic. After we finished the meals, we agreed to give an overall rating of 7 out of 10. The cafe does have fantastic food and drinks, but we wish they would improve their service. It was a lovely experience dining in a picturesque environment and enjoying lunch in an aesthetic cafe. It was already Zuhr, so we quickly headed to the Musolla Bambu near the car park with a gate entrance leading to it. After we got through the gate, we only saw a big spooky bamboo hut. Dried leaves are everywhere, showing the bamboo hut was not kept well like other areas. But the inside of the bamboo hut is completed with prayer equipment, such as prayer mats, telekung and an ablution area. It is divided into two partitions, one for men and the other for women. It was comfortable to pray there. Then we rolled out back to Nilai after all settled with the prayer. It was an interesting experience for us to do the short vacation together where the location is also nearby. Unfortunately, we have not done all kinds of activities around the resort like ATV, flying fox, archery and gokart because we only had a low budget and were already exhausted. But this resort is recommended if someone wants to heal their mental health with nature. “ 24
