A memorable night

Nur 'Aisyah bt Zulkifli (F1D)

A MENMIGOHRTABLE

“What you give you’ll get back”. This quote can be used for good and bad
situations. This is a story about something that I never expected to
happen in the pandemic era.

Never shall I forget that night, at my hostel, that turned my life into one
long night. I only heard whispering at night. People were busy studying
since it is exam week.

I was sitting at a study table in my room comfortably, trying to figure
out how to answer the math question. I could hear the sigh
of confusion from my roommates. Sometimes I heard the
sound of clicking the calculator. It’s just an ordinary
night for students that have an exam.

Suddenly, we heard a knocking sound at the door and one of my
friends from the next room appeared while calling my name.

I quickly grabbed my scarf and went to her. I wonder
what she’s going to tell me but she just pulled my
hands and took me to her room.

I was shocked to see one of my friends, Minji, was
panting hard. She’s having short breaths and her face
was as pale as death. I quickly checked her right away
and asked them to inform the warden about this.
As fast as lightning the warden called an ambulance.
Minji was suspected with coronavirus since she had
some symptoms , plus our hostel is one of the big
cases of it so the percentage of being covid patients
was high. In that case, the warden couldn't take her
to the hospital.

We waited anxiously for the ambulance
to come and it has been almost one hour.

The darkness showed that it was twelve
o’clock and the witnessed Minji almost
fainted two times. I almost cried seeing

her like that.

After a few minutes we heard the siren
and saw the ambulance driving at high-
speed with three hospital’s staff wearing
full PPE suits. Without hesitation they

lift Minji to the ambulance.

‘Everything will be okay and I can go back to study’. My
thought betrayed me when one of the hospital’s staff asked for
one person to go with them as Minji’s guardian.

We were just too stunned and started to look at each other. I'm
already feeling uneasy by the two pairs of eyes that already
stared at me. Without thinking of anything, I quickly hopped
in the ambulance and they drove as fast as a race car. I sat
blankly in the ambulance.

Dumbstruck with what happened. Everything happened
at a twinkling speed. While holding Minji’s wallet,
phone and mask, I sat with a mixed feeling.
The staff asked me to wear the mask so I
just grabbed the mask on my hand and wore it.

As we arrived at the hospital, they immediately
took Minji to the emergency room.

I got out of the ambulance
looking confused since it was my
first time going to the hospital
without my parents.

Scared , worried and anxious
stirring up my feelings. It was 1am
but the hospital was still crowded with people. I
waited behind the column and got my
consciousness.

Looking at the tinted mirror, one girl wearing baju
kurung, toilet slippers and messy standing in front of me.
I'm just laughing painly because I look like a dowdy girl.

I waited 30 minutes trying to disturb myself with
anything but I didn't bring any wallet or phone. Sigh.

The people there were busy chattering and some of
them were walking in front me looking me up and down.

In the meantime, I saw my warden

ran towards me and asked if
everything was good. The doctor didn't

inform me anything about Minji
but I hope everything was fine.

The reality suddenly hit me when I started to think about
the exam tomorrow since I haven't finished studying yet.

Regret feelings wrap me.

After a while, the doctor told us that Minji wasn't infected
by the virus but was having anxiety and her body didn't
get enough water. She had to stay for a while to monitor

her condition until she got better.

I saw Minji's parents were talking to the warden then I
told them about Minji's condition. I felt sorry when I
looked at Minji’s mom's eyes. Worried and teary.

After having some chat, I went back to the
hostel with my warden then took a bath. It's
already 4am but I am still trying to study but
it ended with nothing. I just gave up and went

to sleep tiredly.

The next morning, I only hope for a miracle that I’ll pass
the exam. When I opened the paper, my tongue-tied as all
the questions were easy peasy and doable. I grab my pen
and start writing the answer with eager beaver.

As expected I got a high mark for my paper on that day. I
think God really helped me and it’s karma from helping
my friend.

It's such a memorable yet traumatic night for me but still
I enjoyed the moment and was thankful because nothing

serious happened..
