Rani Lakshmi Bai was born in Varanasi. She was fondly called ‘Manu’. Manu
was very different from other children. She was smart and fearless.

Along with her studies, Manu learnt horse riding and swordfighting too. She
got married to the king of Jhansi. After marriage, she got her new name-
Rani Lakshmi Bai.

Sadly, she lost her husband at a very
early age. After her husband’s death,
she became the queen of Jhansi. The
British people thought that Rani
Lakshmi Bai was alone and weak.

They attacked her and wanted to
capture her fort.

The queen was very brave. She tied her
son on her back and fought with the
British people.

The war continued for many days. But
she did not give up. Sadly, she lost
her life fighting for freedom. Rani
Lakshmi Bai was a great leader. People
still remember her for her bravery.
