many animals can!

We use our eyes to see things. We use our nose to smell.

We taste food with our tongue. We bite food with our teeth.

Most of the time, we use more than one part of our body

Describe what you feel.

Seema was watching the tree leaves
move slowly. She wondered who was
moving them. She asked her mother.
Her mother told her that ‘wind’ was
moving it. Seema wanted to know
about wind. Let us read to understand.

62

What is air?

Air is present all round us. We cannot see or smell it. We cannot taste or
touch it. All living organisms need air to live.

What is wind?

We can only feel air when it moves.
For example: We can feel air when we do these following activities.

We ride the We run. We swing. We stand in
cycle very fast. front of a fan.

When we do the above activities, we feel the air move against our body.
The moving air is called wind. Wind helps us in many ways:-

Wind makes the windmill to work. Wind helps the paper plane to fly.

Wind helps the sail-boat to sail. Wind helps us to fly kites.

63

Activity

1. Take a balloon.
2. Fill air into it. You can also take help from an adult.
What happens when you blow air into the balloon? Tick the right answer.

 The balloon becomes small in size.
 The balloon becomes big in size.
Draw the picture of the balloon before and after air was blown into it. Does it look
different?

Uses of air

Air fills up space and gives shapes to things. In
the above activity, when you filled the air into
balloon, it became big.
We use air to fill things like a football, cycle
tube, swimming tube, balloon etc.
All living things need air to live.

Dirty and clean air

Have you seen smoke coming out from factories and
vehicles? This smoke mixes
with the air.This makes the
air dirty. Breathing dirty
air harms our body. Plants
and trees help to keep the
air clean. So, we should
plant more trees.

Get Set Go!

What are the common things in all the vehicles ?____

85

We go from one place to another for different purposes. For this we need vehicles

like bicycle and bus. These vehicles are called means of transport. Long ago,
humans or animals pulled carts to carry goods or to travel. Now we have faster
means of transport.

There are three types of transport: the land transport, water transport and air
transport.

Land transport

On land, we use bicycles, scooters, motorcycles, cars, buses and autorickshaws.
Some of them are fast and some are slow. Some have two wheels, some have
four wheels and some have more than four wheels.

bicycle scooter motorcycle

car bus autorickshaw

Trains carry hundreds
of people from one
place to another.

In India, metro rail
is the latest mode of
transport. It carries
people to different
places within the city. In Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, we have
metro rail for local transport.

86

Water transport

Ships, steamers and boats are the means of water transport. People use ships
to travel long distances on the seas and oceans. Boats and steamers carry
people and goods along the rivers.

Air transport Did you know?

Aeroplanes and helicopters are the Aeroplanes are the fastest and

the fastest means of transport but they
are too expensive. Helicopters are not
very popular because they cannot carry
many people. People, who want to go to
a very, very distant place like the moon,
will need a rocket.

Aeroplane Helicopter Rocket

87

Fuel

Cars, scooters, buses, aeroplanes run on some fuel like petrol, diesel,or compressed
natural gas (CNG). As we get energy from food to work and play, vehicles get
energy from these fuels. But fuel comes from earth, and earth has limited fuel.
We must save fuel.

Did you know?

Buses in Delhi run on CNG because
it generate less pollution.

Animals as means of transport

Many animals help us to carry people and goods from one place to another.
• In deserts, people use camels for transport. The camel is called the ‘Ship of

the desert’.
• Elephants carry heavy logs in forests.
• Mules and ponies help us to travel in hilly areas.
