“Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu.”

May all beings everywhere be happy and
free, and may the thoughts, words, and
actions of my own life contribute in some way
to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Yoga not only offers“asanas”or physical practice, but meditation,
breath techniques and a strong philosophical core with moral,
ethical and societal guidelines to help us lead a Pono (spiritually
righteous) life.

Living Aloha means Being Yoga: it is both a work out and a work
in. With regular and simple practices, a balance is achieved:
we feel more relaxed from tension, get clarity of thought, self
confidence, cheerfulness and a sharper memory. So as far as
these qualities are concerned, Yoga should be part of a holistic
answer and new paradigm of conscious living.

We cannot go any longer using old methods that have proven
over and over to fail and cannot fulfill a human being’s creative
potential. We need the values of oneness, authenticity, peace
and unity.

So instead of sitting silently and allowing the sorry state of
our society to continue in the decay, I invite us all to become
the solution. Teachers, parents, brothers, let’s make Yoga a
fundamental subject, like math or grammar. Let’s ask for holistic
education from our governments and nourish it from the core
of our homes. Let’s teach our Keiki practices that heal from
within and fill our souls instead of feeding the popular belief
that in order to be happy we need more stuff, achievements
and online followers.

Yoga offers us a much healthier approach in which we need to
approve ourselves, love ourselves, and know ourselves.

I hope our teachers, thinkers and especially our leaders,
take yoga into serious consideration because it offers great
possibilities, solutions and hope.

N IA Love Your Body,
Love Your Life

by Jennifer Loftus

Love Your Body, Love Your Life is one of Nia’s mottos.
Nia is a cardio dance group fitness class to music that
incorporates martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Nia’s
philosophy is that through movement we find health. Nia
fitness is based on the idea that exercise should feel good
inside and out.

Nia as a lifestyle practice is a way for me to move through
life, choosing wellbeing in body, mind and spirit. As I
continue to condition for life in my NOW body and guide
others to do so, I am always inviting in awareness. The
choices invited by the Nia practice help me remember I
always have a choice in any situation, and that gives me
personal power.

And ahhh… that ever present element of life… change!
Nia is never the same and conditions me to dance with
change. I am always fascinated by the science of the body
and how to move with it. Nia allows me to continue to
choose the sensation of pleasure as I move—avoiding the
“no pain, no gain”mentality.

I want to feel good in my body as long as I am in a body,
and be able to do all the things I want to do. A functional
fitness practice that is fun, this draws me to Nia like a
magnet. As I call on the tools and gifts of the Nia practice,
I enhance my life force energy. The more life force energy
I have, the more I can allow what I bring to the planet to
ripple out into the world and encourage others to do the
same. Moving with Nia keeps me in balance as I invite
in and embody the different movement energies of Nia,
keeping them ready to call into action off the mat.

Tuning into, embracing and moving WITH my palette
of emotions through music and movement keeps my
emotion in motion. I remember to play and have fun
with Nia! As I continue to listen to the voice of my body
throughout my day and what it needs, life in a body
becomes more pleasurable. As I move with greater
consciousness and understanding, my body, mind and
spirit respond with a resounding,“YES!”

Jennifer Loftus is a certified and licensed brown
belt Nia instructor. She teaches Nia classes twice
a week at Island Spirit Yoga in Lahaina, Maui.
Jennifer holds space for authenticity, truth, inner
wisdom, playfulness, creativity, healing and fun
in her classes.

Asking around, we hear three main reasons why people in Maui County don’t get
involved in local politics:

we Deliver 1) Some Hawaiians don’t participate as a matter of principle, because they believe

IslandFreshDelivery.com upwind of our communities. The law called for the companies to stop their
experiments until a study can show that what they are doing in Maui County,
specifically, is causing no undue harm to our people or our local environment.

History was made when Monsanto and Dow reported the most money per capita
ever spent on a local initiative election in the United States, over $8 Million, (with
more surely spent under the table) and elected Maui County officials openly
spread lies trying to defeat the law.

History was made again on Election Day when the people rose to the calling and
duly voted to approve the law. And yet again days later, when the same Maui
County officials turned against the people to collude with the corporations and
refuse to certify or enforce the people’s vote.

These outrageous and unprecedented violations of the public trust have fueled
a fire that has been smoldering in this community for a long time. Activists,
Hawaiians and others, have risen up to demand action on a number of issues, and
the community has responded with its support.

Recent outpourings of public testimony against several environmentally and
culturally exploitative residential and commercial developments have been
extraordinarily effective in shutting these inappropriate projects down.

Because the public’s support for dealing with issues facing our community and
the demand for change to our obviously corrupt local government is finally clear
and present, candidates have come forth for this year’s election like never before.

OAHU

Licious Dishes +
Greens & Vines by Carlos Garcia

“W e are much more than just a restaurant serving food and drink.
We make choices every day, which result in perpetuating our
health and Mother Nature’s health by not using animal products.”
–Sylvia Thompson

I’m happy to say that Honolulu has been high on the list of vegan destinations on many web sites
recently. There are many vegan restaurants and one that really stood out on my last visit to Oahu is
also a raw food restaurant called Greens & Vines in Honolulu. There’s a powerful energy you feel with
“Living, Whole-food, Plant Based meals”. The body recognizes each bite made of vegetables, fruits,
nuts and seeds, so it is easily digested and energized. If we all ate like that, sickness would drop
dramatically. Raw Vegan food has been scientifically proven many times over, that it’s so powerful
it can actually cure you of disease. So it’s probably better to not get sick at all and live your life fully
instead of having to heal your life away.

A little history pre-Greens & Vines, on the way to Bermuda at a stop in New York, Sylvia Thompson
and her husband Pete, dined at raw food restaurant, Pure Food and Wine.“That’s when the lights
went on,”Thompson says.“Each bite was so vibrant, I didn’t even think—oh, it’s raw—and when the
dessert came, I had to ask, if it was vegan?”

Licious Dishes opened in May of 2007 doing Meal Plans, Grab N Go and Farmers’Markets in a little
shop at Dole Cannery as a certified kitchen with a small Grab N Go deli fridge near the door where

customers could pick up pre-packaged meals-to-go, and their
Meal Plan orders on Fridays. Their food has always been totally
Gluten-Free (no grains), Vegan (no animal products-100%
whole-food, plant based), Non-GMO, and much of it is organic/
locally grown. It is truly“Raw”, uncooked and unprocessed. It’s as
close to the land as you can get (i.e., whole foods).

In 2011 after winning the Critic’s Choice Star Advertiser Ilima
Awards, while serving up their food and blowing away everyone
that tried it at the awards banquet, her husband Pete gave
her the green light to start the raw vegan restaurant including
wines. It took a year of the legal/construction process and finally
opened on October 28, 2012. The restaurant became Greens
and Vines and is at the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapiolani
Boulevard in Honolulu. It’s been a hit with locals and tourists
ever since.

There is more demand now for Meal Plan services because
many people live very busy lives and don’t have time to go
out to restaurants, supermarkets or to even pick up meals
to-go everyday. The packaged meals can be eaten at dinner
time or taken to the office for lunch. Each week they offer six
healthy, packaged, gourmet meals (see their website
www.e-LiciousDishes.com for information and to order four
rotating Meal Plans that are available at designated locations
around Oahu.)

Creativity reigns in meals like:

Cauli-Thyme Mash, Miso Shallot Gravy – made of Cauliflower,
Macadamia Nuts, Lemon Juice, Thyme, Garlic, Olive Oil.

BasilTomato Olive Spaghetti (Marinara, Zucchini “Noodles”,)
side Spinach Salad with Red Onions, Olives, Mint.

Middle EasternTaco – Almond Falafels, Romaine Lettuce,
Marinated Sweet Onions, Garlic Tahini Sauce, Non GMO
corn tortillas.

And they’re all made from scratch in their certified kitchen.

You can also sample and purchase their food
at these farmer’s markets:

KCC, Saturday mornings, 7:30 to 11:00

KAILUA, Thursday afternoons, 5:00 to 7:30

KAKAAKO, Saturday mornings, 8:00 to 12:00

Queen’s Medical Center, First Wednesday, 9:00 to 1:30

“So many people keep asking us, when are you coming to our
neighborhood? The time is now to spread our roots around
the island”, says Sylvia. “If you’re interested in becoming a Meal
drop-off point for locals in your neighborhood to pick up,
please let us know”.

It’s no secret that
Hot Yoga is popular.

benefits of practicing From celebrities to athletes, everyone seems
to enjoy and talk about the benefits of this

Hot Yoga practice. Here’s are some of the benefits you’ll
get when you sign up for hot yoga class:

Increased flexibility: the room

by Patricia Carrera is intentionally heated to warm your muscles
and allow you to safely reach new levels of

personal flexibility. I would consider this to be

one of the greatest benefits of practicing Hot

yoga. Being that one of the most common

misconception that prevents people from

coming to a yoga class is not being flexible

enough. Over time your body will improve and

you’ll gain the flexibility that you never thought you

could have.

Cardiovascular: Practicing yoga in a heated room
will increase your heart rate and you get a great cardiovascular

workout. The heat allows your blood vessels to become more flexible which makes circulation easier and increases

oxygen and nutrient flow throughout the whole body.

Detox: The heat also stimulates detoxification of the body through sweating. As mentioned above, the heat
improves circulation in the cardiovascular and the lymphatic system, which aids in the flushing out of toxins.

Weight loss: Each posture combines flexibility, strength and balance to work your body from the inside out.
With persistence, patience and dedication, you can lose inches of excess fat and develop muscle tone and strength

that might never come from other forms of exercise. Practicing yoga draws bodily systems into harmony, regulates

metabolism, and normalizes weight. Weight loss is one of the most popular side effects of practicing Hot yoga.

Breath: Your Breath work is very important during a yoga practice, especially in a heated room. If there is no
breathing, there is no yoga. It won’t take long before you learn to breathe in a full and controlled manner.

Relaxation: Hot yoga goes above and beyond when it comes to relieving stress and building inner
confidence. This practice is the true definition of“mind over the matter”. The endorphin rush you receive after

completing a 60 or a 90 minute sweat session will leave you feeling like there’s nothing you can’t accomplish.

No matter what your level of fitness is, Hot yoga is for anyone and everyone
who is willing to try. You will find Hot Yoga physically and mentally challenging,
yet you’ll feel amazing after it and cannot wait to be back in the Hot Room.

When we consume other species’ mother’s milk as adults,
the same opiods go to work, making us sleepy, lethargic,

animals, laughing when they behaved funny, wiped off
the sticky saliva with your sleeve when one of them got
close enough with trust and showed some affection.
Those little yellow chicks were so cute and you wanted
to take one home with you! Later in life, some of you
made the connection that beef is a cow, pork is a pig,
venison is deer and so on. You might have felt betrayed
