From The Interim Rector’s Study

Coming to Terms with the History of

St. John’s Episcopal Church, Kingsville, Maryland

1692 – 2015

The interim period between Settled Rectors is a prime time for the renewal and the re-energizing of the parish in its life
and mission. My job as your Interim Rector is threefold:

Maintain the regular worship and pastoral life of the congregation;
Offer special teaching and prayer programs helpful for the success of the interim period; and
Guide the congregation through the successful completion of the 5 Developmental Tasks unique to the interim period.

The Five Developmental Tasks include the following:

Heritage – Reviewing how the congregation has been shaped & formed by its history from its founding to the present;
Leadership – Reviewing the membership needs & its ways of organizing & developing new & effective leadership;
Connections – Discovering all the relationships a faith community builds outside of itself, including the Diocese of
Maryland , local Episcopal Churches and the broader ecumenical community;
Mission – Defining and redefining sense of identity, purpose and direction; and
Future – Developing congregational and pastoral profiles, and preparing for Interim Rector’s departure and new Settled

Rector’s arrival.

A History Time Line is now on display in the Parish Hall. It traces the history of St. John’s Church from its founding in
the mid - 1600s to the present day. More of the Time Line will be displayed as I complete writing the history of your church.
Everyone, male and female, old and young, is encouraged to review the Time Line and add your name and the date and
how you joined St. John’s Church. You are welcome to make additions and corrections as well. Copies of the completed
text of the History of St. John’s Episcopal Church will be available on line and hard copy from the church office beginning in
August.

Parish Wide History Nights will be held on the Friday evenings of July 17 and 24, and if necessary on July 31 as well.
We will meet each night in the Parish Hall beginning at 7:00 PM and conclude by 9:00 PM. Each night will begin with a time
of fellowship with Wine and Cheese, move to the program, and conclude with Compline together.

On the first night, July 17, we will review the rich history of St. John’s Parish from its beginnings in the mid 1600s to the
present.

On the second night, July 24, we will lovingly review the ministry of several of the faithful priests who served this con-
gregation in recent years. We will learn about some of their strengths and weaknesses, and tell a funny and an en-
dearing story about each.

If any unfinished parish business surfaces during the first two nights, we will plan to meet a third night, July 31, to posi-
tively resolve these issues.

My fourteen years of experience as an Interim Priest has taught me that the parish History Project is one of the most
important bits of homework you will accomplish during the interim time. Every congregation I have done this project with
has enjoyed it immensely. It is a positive, healing time of learning for new members and long term members alike. You will
learn a lot about your church’s past and what that means for the future to which God is calling you. And,.. it is a lot of fun,

too!

A Sign-Up Sheet for History Project is on the table in the back of the church. A count of how many will attend will help
us to plan for Wine & Cheese, etc. Thank you.

Parade News

A truck, a truck! My kingdom for a truck!

We need a pickup truck for our entry in the 4th of July parade. Do you know some-

one with a relatively new pickup without a cap who would be willing to drive

their truck in the parade? Our St. John’s banners will be placed on the sides so

everyone will know who we are!

A few more fun loving folk are also needed to either walk with our “Jesus” or
greet the public on our campus. Can’t make it on the 4th? You can still help out by

dropping off food, beverage or snack donations for our hardworking Americorp
and parish volunteers. Drop off is Friday evening July 3rd between 6 & 7:00 at the

parish hall or

DefiniƟons of Bible Study

Taken from Michael Hardin, A Theologian from Lancaster, PA

DefiniƟon for Adults

“The Bible Canon is a dialogue in process into which we are invited, to discuss, to debate, to learn, to listen, so
we may disƟnguish the voice of the (crucified) vicƟm from that of the persecuƟng community, and thus to
hear the Voice of God, and see the face of God in the dying Jesus.”

DefiniƟon for a 13 Year Old

“The Bible is a collecƟon of stories and leƩers from different perspecƟves. To read it is like when you come
upon two friends in an animated, or even heated discussion about some topic. There are sides to be taken
when reacƟng to the Bible. SomeƟmes the people that tell the story are those who hurt others and so they
jusƟfy their hurƞul ways. Then there are stories and songs told from the perspecƟve of those who are unfairly
blamed and hurt by others. This is why God came in Jesus, to show us that God takes the side of the vicƟm’s
way of telling the story of what happened. God shows us in Jesus’ death how God is God.”

DefiniƟon for a 6 Year Old

“This is a big book with lots of scary stories. And there is a good one, too. When you are a liƩle older, I will
read some of them to you and you may ask all the quesƟons you want.”

Sunday School at St. John’s?

Yes! We do hope to start up a Sunday School Program for the New 2015/2016 Season!

The new season will begin on Sunday, September 13, with our annual Parish Picnic held in the Beach-
mont ChrisƟan Camp located at 6433 Mt. Vista Rd., Kingsville, MD 21087. FesƟviƟes will begin with Holy
Communion in the park at 10:30 AM, followed by fellowship, good food, and fun and games.

The first Sunday School Classes will be held in the Parish Hall the next Sunday, September 20. Classes
will begin at 9:15 AM and run for about 45 minutes. Then at about 11:00 AM, the children will be escorted
into the big to church to sit with their parents/guardians for Holy Communion.

Our curriculum we will be “Seasons of the Spirit” lecƟonary based materials. There will be convenient,
on line access for volunteer teachers.

A One Room School House model will be used in the beginning with all age levels learning to-
gether in one class with two teachers. This set up is easy to expand as the Sunday School program grows.

RegistraƟon for the 2015/2016 Sunday school Season begins immediately. Simply contact An-
gie during Church Office Hours. She will collect names and informaƟon.

Wanted: Volunteer Sunday School Teachers!

We need 6 adult volunteer Sunday school teachers to form 3 Teaching Teams of 2 each. Fr. Dan
will facilitate Safe Church Training with the volunteers this summer, and review the curriculum and schedul-
ing for the year. A Volunteer Sign-up Sheet can be found in the back of the church and in the Parish Hall.
