One Hen Welcomes New Executive Director, Matt Schatzle

Last month One Hen bid a fond farewell to One Hen’s Executive Director of
three years, Helen Rosenfeld, and welcomed aboard our new Executive
Director, Matt Schatzle. Helen’s guidance has been pivotal in One Hen’s growth
and Matt’s experience promises another exciting phase of innovation and
evolution. Click here to learn more about this important transition.

First-Ever Summer Camps are a Success!

This summer, One Hen ran two 1-week Social Entrepreneurship
Camps in partnership with Roxbury Tenants of Harvard and Jubilee
Christian Church. The 36 campers enjoyed daily presentations from
professionals and entrepreneurs from local businesses and
nonprofits including Lovin’ Spoonfuls, School the World, Chicken
and Rice Guys, InnerCity Weightlifting, Dirty Boys Composting, and
Bulfinch. One Hen also arranged for the youth to enjoy field trips to
B.good and Sapient Nitro where they toured the facilities and
learned how both businesses use their services and products to
help their communities. Throughout the week, the campers spent
hours developing their businesses and worked in teams to create
marketing materials, design products and prepare their final
presentations for a panel of adult entrepreneur judges.

The campers also held a sell events where their homemade cards, jewelry, key chains and wallets
earned them hundreds of dollars and enabled them to make generous contributions to Cradles to
Crayons and Boston Children’s Hospital. On the final day of the camps, the business teams
presented to a panel of local professionals from The Bridgespan Group, TD Bank, The Stearns
Family Foundation, Tiger Presentations, The Matthew 19:26 Fund, and The Black Alliance for
Educational Options. These professionals provided each group feedback on their business model
and then mentored individual students on their personal entrepreneurship plans and goals. After
theses presentations and the mentoring session, the campers and guests enjoyed an ice cream
party, funded with the remaining profits from their businesses.

Another Strong Season in South Boston

The Tierney Center ran two One Hen programs this year and
are preparing for their third this fall. The Center’s first
program involved a group of girls who named their jewelry
business The Cool Colorful Kids (CCKs) and donated a
percentage of their profits to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
The CCK girls sold their wares at One Hen’s spring gala on
May 9 and two members of their business team spoke about
what they had learned through the One Hen program to an
audience of over 200 One Hen supporters.

This summer, the Tierney Center kept the momentum going with another program that birthed two
new businesses: The Awesome Business Boys and the Awesome Business Girls. These youth
sold ice cream and homemade bracelets at their end-of-program celebration and raised $120.
Both groups paid back their $10, plus $1 in interest and then agreed to donate $10 each to
support an animal rights organization in their community. The Tierney Center Director matched
their donation, allowing them to give a generous $40 to the Northeast Animal Shelter!

Up next, the Tierney Center staff will attend a fall One Hen teacher training workshop that will
equip them to teach the program this fall to all of their students over the age of 8. Now that the
program has gained popularity among their community, the center is expecting an even larger
group of One Hen kids and more business success – keep up the great work Tierney!

A Dream Summer with Dream Mentoring

In June, One Hen trained six staff from the Dream Program,
an organization that pairs young people from affordable
housing neighborhoods with college students, under a
mentorship model, with the goal of “empowering youth to
recognize their options, make informed decisions, and
achieve their dreams.” The six trainees then ran One Hen
programs for five groups of youth in Roxbury, Somerville and
Cambridge. One Hen supported these young facilitators as
they developed the curriculum to fit their beneficiaries’ unique
needs, obtained resources and support from their communities, and arranged for the students’ sell
events and charitable donations. The 51 participating youth made beaded bracelets and key
chains and then sold them at National Night Out in South Boston. Dream’s Program
Empowerment Director, Shavel'le Olivier, was pleased to how actively engaged the youth were in
these empowering business activities:

“The youth of DREAM have learned to exercise their creative freedom. They came up with
the name of the business, they got to pick out the products they wanted to do, and they were
excited to see the products that they themselves made being admired and sold."

Esteemed Professor Contributes Blog Series

This summer, One Hen had the honor of welcoming Dr. Annie Whitlock
from the University of Michigan-Flint as a guest author on the One Hen
Blog. Between June and August, Dr. Whitlock wrote six riveting articles
summarizing her experience using the One Hen curriculum with a group
of students to inform her PhD dissertation, One Hen: Teaching
elementary-level economics for civic engagement. Throughout the
blog series, Dr. Whitlock distills her One Hen experience into lessons
learned, class examples, and best practices for other One Hen
educators to learn from. Check out the series here:

Update on Africa: New Partners and Growing Programs

This summer saw the scale up of One Hen's partnership with
Tearfund to expand youth programming to Ethiopia and Tanzania,
reaching over 1,000 youth with our 26-week group Self Help Group
program. Guided by the program's mobile application curriculum, 50
trained facilitators recruited youth participants, initiated the group
meetings, established bylaws, and started saving. The facilitators also
provided feedback each week on their group's experience and the
app content so One Hen and its technology partner, Code Innovation,
could continue improving the curriculum content and program implementation strategy.

One Hen is also pleased to report the start-up of a second international program in Tanzania, with
implementing partner World Vision. The program will begin in early November and involve six
youth groups in the Babati region. The Matthew 19:26 Foundation is to thank for making this new
project possible and thereby expanding One Hen's youth programming so hundreds more
Tanzanian youth can become economically and socially empowered.
