Celebrating the Sacraments

Baptisms - We joyfully welcome into our faith community those children
who received the Sacrament of Baptism last week!! Congratulations to
them and their families: Makayla Adoma Asare, Gabriela Afua Asare,
Camilla Marie Forde, Evan Charles Walsh, Colbie Marie Mancuso, and Grace Marie Sutton.

Lent begins this week…

What is Lent? Lent is the annual preparation for the celebration of Easter, calling us to
reform our lives and to open our hearts to the spiritual blessings that God has promised to bestow
on us.
When is Lent? Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14th of this year, and lasts for 40
days. Because Lent is a penitential season which includes fasting, Sundays are not included in the
40 days, since they are feast days in the Church.
Who needs Lent? We all do! The practices, traditions, and rituals of Lent are all meant to
turn our lives back towards God. God wants nothing more for each of us than to be happy - truly
happy, the kind of happiness that comes from becoming the person He created us to be. Lent is
our yearly opportunity to take a close look at how we are living our lives and to make some real
changes to get back on the path of becoming that person. Lent is a time to open the doors of our
hearts a little wider so that when we get to the celebration of Easter we are better able to
receive the overflowing of God's graces.
What are the practices of Lent? The basic practices of Lent are prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving, all rooted in Jesus' example about how to be His disciple.
 Prayer - deepens our relationship with God and is nothing more than dialogue with Him.

Spending more time in prayer can be as simple as attending daily Mass, joining one of our
weekly rosary group, going to Stations of the Cross on Fridays or simply spending a few minutes
each day in silent prayer.
 Fasting - expresses our desire to find happiness in God rather than in the satisfaction of our
physical needs. While many people give up particular foods during Lent, fasting from
behaviors or habits that are spiritually unhealthy can also help open our hearts to God. Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics from
age 18-59 and Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. When fasting, a person is
permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a
full meal.
 Almsgiving - providing assistance to the poor is a way of bringing our relationship to others
into the orbit of God's love.

See pages 7 and 8 for a special opportunity to grow together as a community this Lent.

Lent begins February 14th. Ashes will be Stations of the Cross
distributed at Masses as follows: Fridays during Lent

8:00 AM, 10:30 AM - with St. Augustine School, 7:00 PM
4:00 PM, and 7:00 PM

Religious Education

Sunday grade 7 & 8 Religious Education students have been
working with Communities Together of Lawrence on their
Birthday in a Box Program. We sponsor a February birthday party
by putting together a package of “goodies” for children who
attend the after school program in Hancock Courts and who
celebrate their birthdays this month so they and their friends can
have a wonderful party. A special thank you goes to the students
who donated cupcakes, juice boxes, party favors and made
birthday cards for the birthday children. As we begin our preparation for Lent our students are
learning there are many ways to practice “Almsgiving”.

On Ash Wednesday, a special collection will be taken up in every parish across the Archdiocese of
Boston in support of Catholic Charities, launching the Live Your Faith, Love Your Faith campaign.
For 115 years, Catholic Charities of Boston has worked to serve nearly 200,000 of our neediest
neighbors annually throughout Eastern Massachusetts. As one of the largest providers of social
services in Massachusetts, we stand with those less fortunate than ourselves and provide a wide
variety of aid to those in need.
Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities (MVCC) is a community service site of Catholic Charities that
helps nearly 30,000 people in need from Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill and surrounding
communities annually through a wide range of services. The programs at MVCC strive to prevent
hunger and homelessness for local families in a financial emergency; engage young parents
through skill building and education; provide elders support as they raise their grandchildren; and
support families in their effort to build safe, nurturing environments as they follow their own path
back to self sufficiency. Thank you for your generosity!

From the Parish CAP Team…
Did you know that all Catholic school personnel in the Archdiocese of Boston are screened for
their ability to work safely with children, are provided information and training to help them
recognize and deal with issues of child sexual abuse, and are offered guidance and instruction on
appropriate professional conduct with students? Likewise, all seminarians and candidates for the
diaconate go through extensive evaluation and psychological assessment before entering
formation. After ordination, priests and deacons receive ongoing training on maintaining the
integrity of the ministerial relationship. For particular help: email [email protected]

St. Augustine School Celebrates Catholic Schools' Week

It was an eventful week at St. Augustine School as they joined all Catholic schools around the
country in celebration of National Catholic Schools Week. Each and every day was filled with
excitement and celebrations.

On Monday, the elementary students participated in a “Minute to Win it”
competition against their teachers which they won by a landslide! In the
afternoon, the middle school students held a pep rally in the gym, students
on the basketball team were recognized, and the girls’ volleyball team
competed against the teachers! There was even a performance by our
"Auggie" mascot!
Tuesday was an exciting day because students were able to attend a
“Techsploration” presentation that was filled with interactive STEM
activities. On Wednesday, the students were treated to a Patriots Spirit
Dress Down Day which included a movie with popcorn while the teachers had
a tailgate themed luncheon.
Thursday was a special day to honor our volunteers. Students worked hard in art classes to design
table runners and signs for a volunteer breakfast while teachers and the administration were hard
at work cooking and preparing a waffle breakfast.
Students from the area Catholic schools
competed at the annual spelling bee on
Thursday night at Sacred Heart in
Bradford. We are proud of all our students
who participated, especially Luke Reller
who came in first place in the seventh
grade competition.
The week concluded with a special Mass
presented by third grade students on Friday. What a great week for celebrating what makes
Catholic schools so special!
