INTRODUCTION
Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four
players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a
table using small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.
The sport originated in Victorian England, where it was played among the upper-class as
an after-dinner parlour game. It has been suggested that makeshift versions of the game
were developed by British military officers in India around the 1860s or 1870s, who
brought it back with them. A row of books stood up along the center of the table as a net,
two more books served as rackets and were used to continuously hit a golf-ball.

TABLE TENNIS RULES
Scoring and Games Legal Serving
- Games are played to 11 points - You must throw the ball up straight,
- Players serve two serves each, alternating. from a flat palm, at least 6 inches (16cm)
A player does not have to win specifically off - Your toss and service contact must be
their own serve in order to win a point behind the table surface (not over)
- If a game ties at 10-10, a player must win - You cannot hide the ball from the ball
by 2 points. In this situation, players serve toss to contact, with any part of your
one serve each, alternating body
- In competition, games are played best of 5 - If the ball hits the net during service, it
(first to win 3 games) or best of 7 (first to win is a let, the point is replayed. There is no
4 games). Social games can also be played limit or point deductions for let serves.

Games of table tennis
During normal gameplay, serve alternates every two points (regardless of the winner) until a player wins with a two-
point lead or until a 'deuce' game is required -then serve alternates after each point.
Typically, games are played very much like a tiebreak in tennis, but the target is 11 points and a player must win by at
least a two point difference. Should both players reach 10 points, a "deuce" game comes into effect, with serve
alternating after each point and the game is won by the player who eventually gains a lead of two points. However,
there is an exception - many people may still play the old 21 point game, where service alternates after every five
points.
In table tennis doubles, service alternates every two points between sides, but also rotates between players on the
same team. All the rules of singles apply, but players have to serve to opposite sides of the court (as in a game of
tennis) whereas in singles they do not.
A match usually consists of the best of seven games (the first to win four), but in competition this can also be best out
of five or even nine.
