Based on Dear Mr. Kilmer novel by Anne Schraff, I found that there is one memorable incident
that I can relate to.
[Thesis statement]: It was a memorable moment when Joyce Kilmer replied to Richard’s letter.

[Topic sentence 1]: Richard was mesmerised upon hearing a poem recited by his English
teacher, Mr. Hansen.
Explanation: The poem was written by Joyce Kilmer and called the ‘Tree’. He thought that the
poem was beautiful. It was straightforward and similar to his writing style. Richard knew that
he has found his role model in poetry although his passion was still unknown to people around
him; especially his family members. I can relate to Richard’s hesitation to reveal his true
potential because like him; I am afraid of others’ harsh opinion upon me.

exemplary characteristics.
[Thesis statement]: He was a tender, kind-hearted, an honest person with a strong sense of
justice and did not try hard to fit in.
