The Founder of Rotary

Paul P. Harris

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul P. Harris

Harris was born on 19 April 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. At age 3, he moved to Wallingford, Vermont,
where he grew up in the care of his paternal grandparents. He attended the University of Vermont and

Princeton University and received his law degree from the
University of Iowa in 1891.

In 1896, Harris settled in Chicago and opened a law practice. Four
years later, he met fellow attorney Bob Frank for dinner on
Chicago's North Side. They walked around the area, stopping at
shops along the way. Harris was impressed that Frank was friendly
with many of the shopkeepers. He had not seen this kind of
camaraderie among businessmen since moving to Chicago and
wondered if there was a way to channel it, because it reminded
him of growing up in Wallingford.

“The thought persisted that I was experiencing only what had
happened to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of others in the great
city. ... I was sure that there must be many other young men who
had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in
Chicago. ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing
for fellowship as I was, something would come of it.”

Harris eventually persuaded several business associates to
discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals.
On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr's office
in downtown Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.

In February 1907, Harris was elected the third president of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Toward the end of his
presidency, he worked to expand Rotary beyond the city. Some club members resisted, not wanting to take
on the additional financial burden. But Harris persisted, and by 1910, Rotary had expanded to several other
major U.S. cities.

Harris recognized the need to form a national association with an executive board of directors. In August
1910, Rotarians held their first national convention in Chicago, where the 16 existing clubs unified as the
National Association of Rotary Clubs (now Rotary International). The new association unanimously elected
Harris as its president.

At the end of his second term as Rotary president, Harris resigned, citing ill health and the demands of his
professional practice and personal life. He was elected president emeritus by convention action, a title he
held until his death.

Harris died on 27 January 1947 in Chicago at age 78, after a prolonged illness. Before his death, he made it
known that he preferred contributions to The Rotary Foundation in lieu of flowers. By coincidence, days
before he died, Rotary leaders had committed to a major fundraising effort for the Foundation.

Upon news of his death, Rotary created the Paul Harris Memorial Fund as a way to solicit these donations.
Rotarians were encouraged to commemorate the late founder of Rotary by contributing to the fund, which
would be used for purposes dear to Harris' heart. In the 18 months following his death, The Rotary
Foundation received $1.3 million, which helped support the Foundation's first program — scholarships for
graduate study abroad.

Dear fellow Rotarians:

We have been through trying mes together. We have helped the world cope with uncertainty
and adapt to rapid change. Now is the me for us to dream big.

It is me for us to take on major challenges, to do more and grow more, and most of all, for us to
care for and share with others.

This year, we note all the ways that we Serve to Change Lives. Service is the rent we pay for our
me on earth and we will expand Rotary service as we “grow more and do more.” We will grow

through “Each One, Bring One.” If every Rotary member could bring just one more person to
Rotary, there is no limit to how much we can grow. We will do more by pu ng a special emphasis
on empowering girls, so young women can have improved

opportuni es worldwide. We will also feature Rotary Days of Service, so that all members share
in our good works around the globe and look for new ways to serve beyond their backyards.

It is our a tude that defines service. We all have a great opportunity to lead by example and to
inspire each other to par cipate in projects that have a measured and sustained impact.

The District Board has assumed important responsibili es and I thank them for this hard work.
They have made a commitment to help grow Rotary, adapt to the digital future and make Rotary
more appealing to younger genera ons.

Your good work will help us serve our communi es and help Rotary thrive so we can Serve to
Change Lives.

Kindest regards,

Shekhar Mehta

RI Theme

During this upcoming Rotary Year , I urge you to dream big, guided by our shared vision for Rotary. You will
plan and set goals, inspire and mo vate Rotarians to reach goals — goals to expand the reach of our
organiza on by increasing membership, and goals to increase the impact of Rotary by serving the world.
And in this journey, you will play a stellar role as you share your goals with Rotarians and Rotaractors in
your district and inspire them to "do more and grow more." Friends, this will be our guiding mantra. "Do
more" as in bigger and impac ul service projects, and "grow more" as in increasing our membership and
expanding the par cipa on.

Membership, friends, con nues to be our biggest challenge. So, friends, the dream is to increase our
membership to 1.3 million by 1 july 2022! We need to grow more to do more.

I have always hugely been inspired by the mo o of Rotary — Service Above Self. It has taught me to care for
others and share with others. Service, to me, is about thinking of others even before I think of myself. I am
sure each of you also has found your opportunity to serve. You too may have provided eyesight to the
blind, food to the hungry, homes to the homeless. They may have been small opportuni es for service or
large projects. More than just the size, it is the a tude that defines service.

Rotarians keep serving because we want to change lives. Many of you have been an important part of
similar service projects, and you have changed the lives of people. There was a need to serve, and you
served. Today the need to serve has become even more necessary and apparent. I urge you to lead by
example and inspire Rotarians and Rotaractors to par cipate in projects that have a sustained impact. Join
hands with other Rotarians, other organiza- ons, corpora ons, and do projects that impact your
community, your city — projects that can change lives of people across the country and around the world.

As we all serve, we change the lives of not only others; we change our lives, too. Friends, to live for others,
to care for others, to serve others and change their lives is the best way to live our own lives. Just as Albert
Einstein said, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."

And friends, as we go about our service ini a ves, our special focus this year will be on empowering girls.
We will serve all children, but our focus will be specially on the girl. There are many issues that girls face in
different parts of the world, and you as leaders will ensure that we try and mi gate the disadvantage of the
girl that they may have. the task ahead is challenging. And that should excite you. Rotarians love
challenges. A ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what ships are meant for. They need to go out in the
high seas. Life, my dear change-makers, is about adventure and not maintenance.

WE HAVE THE POWER AND THE MAGIC TO SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES
Therefore, the theme for our year is : Serve to Change Lives.

Dear Shekhar & Mover DG Sunil Phatak,

You are now the torchbearer of an essential element of the Rotary World and with it
comes a lot of responsibilities. I hope the upcoming governor year excites you and
prepares you for the challenges ahead.

It's said more than the destination the “Journey" is what makes your path defined
and happiness endless.

My association with you and your district has increased lots of hope and dreams for
betterment and change in the coming year.

I am a great believer that “You’re never given a dream without the power to make it
true.“
You are in the sky of Service and “the one sees farthest who flies highest “.

I have learned more in the streets than in any classrooms ….urge one and all to go
and explore the needs locally in your district and in every club what they need as a
priority in the community. Someone will like to work in Environment, someone in
Health care or Literacy or water. Rotary leadership gives you the opportunity of
Service and “SEVA“ is the path of purification. Seva is where social and spiritual life
meets together.

This journey will connect you to thousands of people someone who will share his
knowledge/someone who will be a volunteer/someone who will be an
advisor/someone who will support fundraising/someone who will listen to you and
someone who will be a critic. You will need all such persons in your Team who will
finally showcase the best Symphony of your Rotary Year.

My dear friend Sunil set the highest standard for training/spellbound incoming events
/ Classic Dist conference/learning modules with the adoption of technology /
informative publications/stories of beneficiaries and emotional photos. Create a
euphoria of Successful leadership which will mark the life long engraving in people's
minds and society.

Your year should be remembered as the year of Perfectionist, Wizard thinker,
Creative, Go-getter, Charmer, to raise the fallen, to cheer up the suffering, to bring
solace to the affected.

These are my aims and ideals. I will help you and guide you. I live to serve all. I live
to make you all happy.

God bless.

On graduation in 1970, was invited to join the Tata Administrative
Service (T.A.S.). Unfortunately, due to his Father's failing health, Gulam
had to leave T.A.S. in 1974 and take over the reins of the Family Business.

Gulam's initial "Eureka" Moment in Rotary happened in 1978 when he
was selected as a Member of the District 314 Group Study Exchange GSE)
Team to Rotary District 656 in Indiana, U.S.A. In December 1979 he was
invited to join the Rotary Club of Bombay Downtown, and in 1985-86 was elected to serve as President, and
in 2002-03 D-3140 unanimously elected him as District Governor.

As District Governor, he united the District Leaders and Presidents of all Rotary Clubs, by a motivating
message "Working Together Works". This bonding resulted in a record contribution to TRF in District 3140
of US$ 654,000, the largest contribution by any Rotary District in India till 2006-2007.

There was an equally big Game-Changer.... the Jan Seva Abhiyan or Railway Station Adoption Project.
Rotary Clubs across the District adopted Railway Stations and made it their mission to ease Local Rail
Commuting. This was an unqualified success which resulted in very positive PR for Rotary.

In acknowledgment of his leadership and commitment, he has been, among other International
appointments, Training Leader (twice), Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator (2004-2007), Chairman of
RI's Communications Committee, Chairman of TRF's Alumni Advisory Committee, Member of the critically
important TRF Future Vision Committee and member of TRF Peace Centers Committee.

He is currently serving a four year term as Trustee of the Rotary Foundation up to 2022. In the Rotary year
20-21 he has been appointed as Chairman of the Trustees 'Stewardship Committee and a member of its
Executive Committee. He will continue as Chairman of the Trustees Stewardship Committee and a member
of its Executive committee in 2021-22 also.

A Major Donor, he is a recipient of RI's Service Above Self Award and TRF's Citation for Meritorious Service
and Distinguished Service Award.

His Motto of Service encompasses other Initiatives. He is a Member of the Governing Board of Mumbai
First, a high-powered group of Citizens committed to improve the quality of Life in Mumbai, Trustee of the
Mohalla Committee Movement Trust and Public Concern for Governance Trust, both spearheaded by
Mumbai's Former Police Commissioner Julio Ribeiro that works for probity in public life, promoting the use
of RTI and promoting Communal Harmony.

A proficient Rider from childhood, Horses have always been a passion. He is currently a Member of the
Board of Appeal of the Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd.

Haseena, Spouse and the Love of his Life passed into the Ages on New Year's Day in 2015. Everybody who
knew her affirm that Gulam was blessed to have such a Life Partner.

Son, Zameer, a partner in the Family Business, which now encompasses diversified ventures, Daughter-in-
law, Khatija, Granddaughter Sumehra, Son-In-Law SatpalBrainch, Daughter Zahabia and their sons Rishaan
and Jaiyaan, are testament to the inclusiveness and understanding of this remarkable Individual.

Rotary in India

Birth of Rotary India

J. Coombes, the manager of steel products company in Calcutta was on a business trip in U.S.A.
There he got interested in the Rotary movement and was impressed with the ‘Friendship,
Fellowship, Service’. After his return to India in 1919, he organized a Rotary Club in Calcutta. The
first meeting was held on 26th September 1919, and the Club was granted charter on January 1,
1920, in 1921 S. C Rudra was admitted as the first active Indian member with the classification
‘Mining Engineering’. In 1926 an Indian Honorary Secretary was elected in the person of Nitish C.
Laharry. Finally, an Indian, A.F.M. Abdul Ali, was elected as President, the first Indian to head a
Rotary Club anywhere.

The Rotary Club of Bombay, launched by Jim Davison, was added on 19th March 1929 with a
charter strength of 38 members of whom 37 were Non-Indians; and the one and the only Indian
was Sir Phiroze Sethna, a member of Indian Legislature, who later became the District Governor.
Jim organized a pleasant group of 28 at Maiden’s Hotel Delhi on 26th April 1929. R.T.H.
Meckenize, Manager of the Burmah Shell Oil Company Ltd, a Britisher, was elected as President.
Even before the club got under way, members began leaving town. With departures on long
leave the Membership dwindled to half and finally the club had to be closed down in 1931.

In Madras, Jim Davidson, with the help of F.C. James of the United Palters Association of South
India organized a meeting on May 10, 1929 with 30 Charter members, all Non-Indians. The first
President was C.G. Armstrong, Chairman of the Madras Port Trust; and the first Secretary was
Morton Chance, Manager of a hotel in Madras.

The growth has been slow, perhaps due to the reason that India at that time was based
essentially on agricultural economy while the whole framework of Rotary membership was
based upon industrial and professional structure of society. Gradually as India emerged to an
economy issued on modern industrialization, extension of Rotary became possible. Rotary club
of Amritsar was born in 1933 and that of Bangalore in 1934. In 1935 five clubs were formed:
Ahmedabad, Baroda, Jamshedpur, Poona and Sholapur, all fast developing Industrial centers
producing textiles, chemicals and iron and steel. Three clubs namely Cochin, Lucknow and Surat
were established in 1937. Rotary Club of Cochin, then the only club in Kerala, was chartered on
23rd August 1937. Of the 22 chartered members, 10 were Non-Indians. Another three Clubs –
Asansol, Madurai and Rajkot came into existence in 1938, and Agra, Salem and Jubulpore in
1939. Delhi Club was also revived in 1939. After the World War II and India’s Independence in
1947, the real Indianisation of Rotary started. By the end of Rotary Year 1946-47, there were 71
Clubs (14 in Gujarat, 10 in Maharashtra, 10 in U.P, 7 in Tamilnadu, 7 in Karnataka and 23 in other
States) with a total membership of 3121 in 7 Districts as against 3 Clubs (with 235 members in
1929-30 in one provisional district, the District comprising of India, Burma and Ceylon).
