SOUTHWEST FLORIDA REGIONAL
ECONOMIC INDICATOR REPORT
It is my pleasure to provide you the December 2014 Southwest Florida Regional Economic Indicator Report. This has
been a very good recovery year with lower unemployment and increased economic activity. This report is provided by
the Regional Economic Research Institute of the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University.
The Southwest Florida and U.S. economies are showing moderate to fast growth. Although there are some concerns
such as slower growth in China and Europe, creating uncertainty and lower global oil demand, the lower oil and
gasoline prices should provide a boost to the regional economy.
The third quarter national real GDP estimate for growth was revised upward to a high growth rate of 5.0 percent, faster
than the second quarter growth rate of 4.6 percent. The third quarter increase reflects higher personal consumption
expenditures, exports, nonresidential fixed investment, residential fixed investment, and government spending. A
continuation of rapid GDP growth would be expected to shorten the length of time over which the Federal Reserve
can maintain historically low interest rates.
There continues to be moderate improvement in the regional economy. Seasonally-adjusted regional taxable sales
were up 11 percent ($188.7 million) in September 2014 over September 2013. Seasonally-adjusted October 2014
total tourist tax revenues for the three coastal counties increased by 15 percent over October 2013. Passenger activity
for the three Southwest Florida airports grew by nine percent between October 2013 and October 2014, and was
up by seven percent year-to-date over the first 10 months of 2013. Single-family home sales for the three coastal
counties were up 11 percent in November 2014, compared to November 2013.
The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the five-county region declined to 5.7 percent in November 2014 from
5.8 percent in October. Florida’s unemployment rate dipped to 5.8 percent from 6.0 percent in October 2014, while
the national unemployment rate decreased to 5.8 percent in November 2014 from 6.0 percent in the previous month.
The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or longer) decreased to 2.8 million, which is 30.7
percent of all unemployed.
The November Bureau of Labor Statistics Establishment Survey showed that national nonfarm payroll employment
increased by 321,000 for the month, higher than the revised increase of 240,000 in October.
The national consumer price index (CPI) increased by 1.3 percent from November 2013 to November 2014. The
shelter index (rental equivalence measure for homeowner costs) has risen 3.0 percent over the last 12 months. Medical
care services increased 2.3 percent, and energy prices decreased 4.8 percent. Core inflation (all items less food and
energy) increased by 1.7 percent. As reported last month, the closest CPI in Florida is for the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
area, which saw a 2.2 percent increase from October 2013 to October 2014. National housing prices increased 4.9
percent for the 20-city composite S & P Case-Shiller Home Price Index in the 12 months ending September 2014.
