Mr. Theeraphon Niyom

National Artist of Thailand for Visual Art and Applied Art (Architecture)

Mr. Theeraphon Niyom, currently aged 67 years old, was born on May 17, 1951, in Phang Nga Province. He graduated secondary school from
Suankularb Wittayalai School, Bachelor of Architecture from Chulalongkorn University, and received a scholarship from the German government to study master's
degree in community and rural development at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. He is the leader in the establishment of the Plan group; the Arsom
Silp Community and Environment Architect, the Arsom Silp Institute of the Arts; Saeng Arun Arts and Cultural Center; Sarn Sang Arun Foundation; and Rung Arun
School Foundation.

Mr. Theeraphon Niyom has continued to create his own architectural works with the confidence that architecture and architect are an extremely
significant part of the civilization process of human society. The architect must, then, be the one who has a comprehensive understanding to integrate various
dimensions such as the physical, social, economic, cultural, environmental and human dimensions in order to reach "the true value of architecture" that truly
benefits human life. He created outstanding architectural works and contributions in a variety of areas, such as (1) pioneering architecture that interacts with the
city and society by encouraging project owners to increase public or semi-public areas in the project, (2) creating a new standard for Thai real estate industry by
increasing the proportion of green areas to uplifting the quality of life for residents, (3) inheriting and decoding local wisdom of Thai vernacular architecture
applying in the contemporary architectural design, continuously and explicitly, (4) being a volunteer in a large number of public architectural projects, and (5)
playing a major role to produce and push forward the participatory architectural conservation projects and community architecture projects in order to promote
the architectural profession as a tool to solve social problems and provide opportunities for low-income community members to reach professional architectural
services. His creative works have won numerous awards both in Thailand and abroad such as receiving the Gold Medal for Outstanding Architecture from the
Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage; winning Outstanding Urban Design Award from the Thai Urban Designers Association (TUDA); winning
ARCASIA Award For Architecture Winner 1994 from Architect Regional Council of Asia; winning Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation from
UNESCO; and winning the award from the new parliamentary contest, Bangkok.

At the present, he has turned his attention fully on the architectural learning process for the community and the environment in terms of being a
job base for nurturing, training and self-development as well as being a learning base for young architects. In order to do that he founded a private university: the
Arsom Silp Institute of the Arts as a nonprofit organization under the Rung Arun School Foundation to cultivate young architects the awareness of the inheritance
of their local wisdom in architecture as well as community activities and participatory conservation; and to serve social development at all levels in the integrated
dimension of community, environment, economy, society, culture and spirituality.

Therefore, Mr. Theeraphon Niyom was honored as a National Artist of Thailand for Visual Art and Applied Art (Architecture) of Year 2013 (2556
Buddhist Era).
