PRESIDENT’S CORNER By Debbie Fowler Hi Everybody, I can officially say Welcome to Spring!! I don't know about you, but I'm sure ready for some warm weather. It's been a long cold winter, even my crocus and daffodils are small and slow to bloom, can't say that about the apricot tree though. Anyway, I want to take a few moments of your time and Thank You for allowing me to serve as your President for 4 years. It has been quite an honor for me. I know I've learned a lot and had a terrific time working with the ballooning community. As a club, we've come a long way. Things always change both in our club and in life. The trick is to keep the focus on the goals and try to be innovative in how you get there. However, most importantly, the key is to treat each other honestly, be the best you can be, enjoy life in this wonderful place, and have fun! We all have choices in our lives and each of us has the same amount of time in our day. To all of you for making the choice to be a proud Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association Member and for those that step up and help the club in any way you can, my hat's off to you. It shows great dedication and love for our sport to choose to take time to belong and to help when needed. AAAA, you're in great hands going forward! As always, Fly Safe, Be Careful, and Have Fun. I’ve deliberately mentioned this introduction hoping you will be so kind in helping me with the following requests for balloons for so many worthy organizations. Thank you again to Beth Wright-Smith for volunteering to work with Christa Benavedez at Horizon Academy West. Christa requested a demonstration for what she refers to as, Friday children. These are children who attend the facility after school on Friday’s while their parent/parents work. Christa and Beth are patiently working on a suitable date for the demonstration. Hopefully, the Spring winds will cooperate. Saturday, April 10th is a huge fund raiser for MADD of New Mexico. Their event will be held at the Embassy Suites near downtown and have requested a balloon ride certificate, maybe two certificates if possible, for two passengers. These certificates will be part of the silent auction. If anyone is interested, please contact Lora Lee Ortiz at 505- 255-2955 or Lizzi Jay at 505-255-2955. If all fails, by all means call Bud Hebrlee at 505-401-9368. Saturday, April 24th is the annual Spring Fling event being held in support of their non-profit Preschool at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church located at 2400 Monterrey Rd. NE in Rio Rancho. Jennifer Miera is the Director and has requested a balloon to tether and provide what she refers to as simple up and down rides to promote their Preschool. If you are interested, please call Jennifer at 5 0 5 - 8 6 7 - 9 5 6 4 , o r e - m a i l h e r a t [email protected]. Jennifer will be pleased and thankful for your help. Saturday, May 8th and Sunday, May 9th is Herbfest for Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center. They are having a raffle to help raise money for the Nature Center and were hoping a balloonist (preferably a well experienced pilot), (Kim’s request), would be willing to donate a hot air balloon ride certificate for two. Kim Fike is the person in charge and would be extremely grateful to hear from one of our AAAA members. Kim can be reached at 505- 301-1324. Thursday, June 3rd is a special day at Manzano Mountain Retreat in Torreon, NM. Camp Enchantment will be held from May 30th through June 5th for children ages 7 through 17 who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer or who are cancer survivors. We made an attempt to glow three balloons there last year and we had so many balloonist volunteer I had to limit the number I could accept. At the last minute, due to some insurance issue the event was cancelled. This year, I’ve been assured things will be different. Therefore, I am requesting balloons to glow and bring joy to these young person’s lives on June 3rd if it is possible. Please call Helen Pino at 505-301-4810 or call Bud Hebrlee at 505-401-9368. ANY BRIEFER…..IS THIS THE BEST WAY TO USE THE SYSTEM? By Rose Marie Kern A recent issue of AOPA magazine pointed out to pilots that the fastest way to get a weather briefer is to call the 1-800-WXBRIEF number and say “Any Briefer.” Well, they are right, this is the way to get someone fast, but is this what you really want? When you say “Any Briefer” the phone tree will send your call to the first available specialist – without regard to where you are calling from. There are times when this is just fine. For instance, asking general ATC questions. Just keep in mind that you could be talking to someone not familiar with your area, or with ballooning in general. Balloonists around the country are frustrated by the fact that the FAA requires Lockheed Martin to ask specific questions prior to giving a briefing, and most places don’t have enough balloonists locally that the specialists understand your special needs. One thing you might try is asking for a Briefer in the southwest. Briefers in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have a “standard balloon briefing.” They know things about the terrain, the available weather stations, and the weather patterns in their areas especially, but since the data is available nationally, you can ask for a balloon brief anywhere else – say central Missouri – and they can access all the aviation data in that area as well. [7]
Lockheed Martin’s phone tree is set up so that if you call and ask for Texas, and it happens that all the Briefers assigned to Texas are busy, within a few seconds the system starts looking for an available Briefer in the surrounding states. This accomplishes two things: it reduces your hold time, and it attempts to get your call to someone familiar with the area you want, or in the case of balloonists, someone familiar with the weather products you prefer. This system has significantly reduced hold times nationwide. If you want to speak to someone at a specific facility, whoever answers your call can put your call back into the queue for that facility. In this case your call will stay in the queue until someone from that facility is available, which may involve holding for a few minutes. Another thing to keep in mind is that the system allows you flexibility when you need information from some other place. For example, if you are in Arkansas and you want to attend a balloon event at the Grand Canyon, while preplanning you can call the 1- 800-WX BRIEF phone number and ask for Arizona. Specialists from New Mexico or Colorado can help a flat-land pilot understand mountain flying, or you can call Illinois, Indiana, Michigan or Ohio to learn about flying the Great Lakes area. Have a question about the famous Santa Ana winds? Call California. This is a valuable tool for getting specific information well in advance of the actual flight. The highest call volumes are between 6am and 10am in each time zone nationwide. Keeping this in mind, we suggest that if you do want pre-planning information, give Flight Service a call later in the day as a courtesy to other pilots whose flights are imminent. Do you remember the TIB’s? Transcribed Information Broadcasts (TIBs) are still available to pilots. These are recordings of the weather and aviation information pertinent to predetermined routes. Some pilots prefer to call them instead of talking to a Briefer when they are flying short local hops. The TIBs phone number is 1-877-484-2799. The flight service phone tree allows you great flexibility when it comes to flight planning and briefs. Be sure you know what you want before you call and ask for “Any Briefer” and you will have a more pleasant briefing experience. Rose Marie Kern has worked in aviation for over 25 years. If you’d like to ask Rose a question send her an email at [email protected]. SHORT BLASTS A Celebration of Life for Chet Brown will be held at 9am Saturday April 3rd at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. For the benefit of those who didn't know Chet, before his ballooning life he had a distinguished military career in both the Navy and Air Force. He served with distinction in Korea and Viet Nam and flew just about everything that could fly. Ballooning was a relatively late addition to his plethora of ratings; he started flying in the 1980s. Chet was a great mentor, both to balloonists just coming into the sport and to some of us who've been around awhile and were able to benefit from his enormous store of knowledge. He was a Balloon Fiesta Safety Officer in 1997 and 1998 was Chief Safety Officer from 1999-2001. He continued to volunteer with the Fiesta, the Balloon Explorium, the Smokey Bear Balloon, New Mexico State Parks, and the Balloon Museum up until his final illness. Above all, Chet was a downright nice, forthright, generous person. Karen conveys her thanks and that of Chet's family for all the support, thoughts, and prayers over the past several weeks. We will miss him enormously. Kim Vesely Thoughts and prayers go out to Pam McCarty and her family for the loss of her father, Lyle C. "Mac" "Grumps" McCarty. He served our country in the Army during three tours in Viet Nam, retiring as a major after 21 years. He was owner and operator of Mac's Trucking. Donations may be made to Otero Oncology, 2559 N Medical Suite G, Alamogordo, NM 88310 or to Alamogordo Home Care and Hospice, 1859 Indian Wells Road, Alamogordo NM 88310. BALLOONS AND SUBMARINES Not a likely connection, one would think. But when old friend, old-timer balloonist and former submariner Dick Brown called to ask about a balloon ride for the Captain and Chief of the Boat of the newest Virginia-class nuclear submarine, the USS New [8]
Mexico [SSN-779], in September, 2008 little did I guess that this connection would become a strong bond of men (and women) and machines (as of this writing, only men can serve on US submarines, which may change). It seems that as part of the public relations for the USS New Mexico, the Commissioning Committee, headed by Dick Brown, was working on invitations for some of the naval officers and sailors to come to New Mexico during the 2008 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. His idea was a balloon ride in the New Mexico State Flag Balloon (the McConnell Family’s yellow and red Zia Balloon). Since there were 8 men plus several wives, the AIBF Board volunteered to take all the Navy folks for rides on the morning of October 11, 2008. The 8 men arrived at the VIP building in full dress uniform, participated in the opening flag ceremony, and the day was dedicated to them. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate that morning, and no balloons flew. But all was not lost - the annual Zia crew appreciation brunch at the McConnell home happened to fall on the same day, so all the submarine people and many of the Zia crew and friends had a grand time eating and downing a few cervesas and getting to know one another. The new owner and pilot of Zia, Tom II, even had his jazz band present. Gifts were exchanged, including Zia pins for all the crew and a yellow and red balloon spinner with the Zia symbol for the submarine. The summer of 2009 presented an opportunity for a balloon ride in Zia for Commander Mark Prokopius, Master Chief (of the Boat) Roger Meffley, Laura Meffley and Dick Brown, Mothers Day, Sunday May 10. During the Balloon Fiesta of 2009, several submariners from the USS New Mexico and Navy PR personnel came for another visit, and this time even Commander Prokopius boss, Rear Admiral Paul Bushong came to see what the balloon fuss was all about. Lieutenant Wielkoszewski also came with the group, along with others involved in the Navy Day festivities. Thanks to General Mike Rice and others, more balloon rides were given [e.g. the Admirals wife and Cdr Prokopius]. The weather finally cooperated. Then on February 1, Dick Brown called to invite Mary and me on a VIP Cruise aboard the submarine, as part of the Commissioning Committee official activities. At about the same time, Dick unofficially invited the Zia Balloon and Crew to Norfolk, Virginia for the commissioning ceremony, to be held on March 27. Tom II and wife Cindy and two longtime crew agreed to drive the balloon from Albuquerque to Norfolk, and to meet up with their daughter Sarah and family (recently retired from the Navy themselves) and their twin sons, both recently on active duty with the Navy, one in Charleston, SC in nuclear technical school, and the other in Jacksonville, FL, assigned to P-3 flight engineer school. Mary and I flew to Orlando FL, along with Dick and 15 members and wives of the Commissioning Committee, on February 17. We met Commander Prokopius and Lieutenant Commander Stan Stewart (Prokopius is called Captain on board, and Stewart is the Executive Officer) that evening for some informal all-you-can-eat snow crab, and the next day, headed out to the submarine base in a Navy bus at abut 5:45 a.m. All 18 of us climbed aboard, down the hatch, to the ward room, where we met our babysitters, Lieutenants Wielkoszewski and Woods. We had a hearty breakfast while the boat undocked, we received our anti-puke pills and a briefing on what to do and what not to do, where the heads were, and general submarine protocol. We had tours of the torpedo room, the officers and sailors quarters, the galley, the blower room, the Navy Seals hatch, and the control room. For those of us who could climb ladders straight up 35 feet, we were allowed to go on the flying bridge. It was there that the Zia balloon spinner was secured, blowing in the breeze, along with the US and New Mexico flags. We submerged to about 400 feet, the Captain practiced battle stations, we blew up an enemy submarine (OK, it was a computer simulation), cruised out from land about 50 miles, ate two more meals aboard, and headed back to the dock after about 12 hours on the boat. To say the least, it was an experience of a lifetime. Unfortunately, the Navy would not allow our balloon to be tethered on the dock during the commissioning in Norfolk (security issues), which, as I write this on Friday, is tomorrow. The only Zia Crew attending tomorrow will be EM3 Kevin McConnell, Sarah McConnell Calhoun and husband Scott, and two darling some-day Navy children. And that is the connection between balloons and submarines! Tom McConnell, Antique Balloonist [with technical help from Dick Brown, Antique Submariner] Friday, March 26, 2010 [9]

CELEBRATION of HONOR FLY 2010 Pilots, It seems as though we were just refueling our balloons with propane and ourselves with Golden Corral breakfast burritos, and now here we are again, planning the next Celebration of Honor Fly. 24/25 July will be on us in no time, so start planning. The event in Casper, WY has been changed so as not to conflict with the Fly. We appreciate that and look forward to welcoming pilots to South Park, who normally head north that weekend. Fort Carson is fired up about the event and one of the Command Sergeant Majors was requesting information about the CoHF even before Dave and Jackie could make the first contact. This year, the guests will all be combat troops and things, the CSM tells us, will be different from last time. The past months have been rough for Fort Carson’s 4th ID Combat Brigade as the war in Afghanistan has taken its toll on their members. As I write this letter, soldiers are in Haiti helping victims of the earthquake. We want to thank everyone who has participated in the past and will this year. You are all fantastic people. The organizing committee cannot tell you often enough how much you are appreciated with an extra back pat for all who drive many hours from out of state and the far out parts of Colorado to honor the soldiers. We have a change this year at the request of numerous participants. The launch site is being moved so pilots have a better choice of switch-out spots, especially south of Hwy 24. The field is on San Miguel a couple miles east of the former site. It is north of Hwy 24 across from the large hill known as Sulfur Mountain. On the corner of Hwy 24 is a brown, ranch house with a “pole barn” garage. The launch field is two blocks north of the house. Look for event vehicles that will be on site before you arrive. We are looking forward to many soldiers going back to Fort Carson with happy memories. We are hoping for more balloons to carry more soldiers and you are getting this letter because you have been part of the Celebration of Honor Fly. If you know anyone who has not and would like to be, have them contact Jackie at the address or phone listed. Thanks again for being a part of this chance to thank our soldiers. Stephen Please let Jackie know if you are going to join us. You can reach her via email at [email protected] or [email protected] , she needs to know which the day you plan to fly, (hopefully both), size and balloon name. [15]
