1 0 Cloudboun c e r GENERAL MEETING MINUTES At 6:30 PM our Vice President, Jennifer, opened the meeting with a welcome to our guests - From Los Lunas, the Osborn family, Stephon, Leah, Sawyer, & Ester. Rio Rancho, Zeriah & Shawn Lenard, and Kendra, Kierstlynn, & Charles Wehner, and finally from Albuquerque, Kaylee Zlotkin, JD & Marian Padilla and Veda Ortego. Congratulations go out to Morghan Chando & Ken Beebe for obtaining their Commercial certification this month. Our presentation this month consisted of six local Rio Grande Balloon Camp campers providing their observations, likes and dislikes from the recent Camp. In summary the favorite part of Balloon Camp was being able to pilot a balloon. Learning about the weather was also a favorite, and the friendships gained rounded out the best parts of the camp. As with all teenagers, the worst part of the camp was getting up so early in the morning. Changes they would like to see for next year consisted mostly of more hands on with less classroom lessons, and learning more about competition flying. Following the discussion with the campers there was a pictorial overview of the camp activities, then the live TV interview conducted by Steve Stucker from KOB TV. NM Quilters’ Association presented the 2019 Balloon quilt. They are starting to design the quilt for the 50th anniversary of Balloon Fiesta. To have your balloon considered for the quilt, a release form will need to be submitted with a color picture of your balloon. For more information visit their website nmqa.org. The Board was convened. Members present: President (Caryn); Vice President (Jennifer); Treasurer (Dick); Secretary (Sue); Special Events (Katie); Ways & Means (Madison); Education (Don); Flying Events (Zerek). Members absent: Community Relations (Jason). Vice President (Jennifer) – The August program will be a safety presentation by Beth Wright-Smith. Secretary (Sue) – Reminder that mid-year membership dues are in effect - $15.00 for a Regular membership with a Family membership (over 16 years of age) remaining at $5.00. Treasurer (Dick) – Pie Charts and summary will be in the Cloudbouncer. As always if you need further information or explanation, contact Dick at [email protected]. Committee reports were presented and will be in the Cloudbouncer. Community Relations report was presented by Jennifer. Other Ballooning Organizations: BFA – No representation. VFRS – No representation. FAA – No representation. Top Gun (Steve Mezzancello & Will Fitzpatrick) – Steve – July ‘s event had 17 pilots sign in but due to increasing winds speeds it was cancelled. Will – Top Gun is an Educational organization providing mentorship to pilots wanting to hone their skills and increase abilities necessary for precision flying. If interested, contact any Top Gun Board member or come out to the next flying event. AIBF (Jennifer Garcia) – A reminder that pilot photos are due by July 31 with all other required paperwork due by September 1. Balloon Museum/Foundation – No representation. The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the Sid Cutter Pilots’ Pavilion from 1 to 5 pm. We have been assured that both RPS and AIR insurance agencies will give their full seminar discounts for this event. ROAD SCHOLAR-FIESTA PRESENTATIONS: We have four Road Scholar tour group presentations scheduled during the balloon fiesta. This fewer sessions than in years past but these will be larger groups totaling about 365 attendees. BALLOON CAMP The Rio Grande Balloon Camp was held July 13 to 18 and was a huge success. We had only one day when no balloons were able to fly but the campers were still given instruction on laying out the systems and pre-flight procedures. By the end of camp, all the campers got to fly and had “burner time” either in free flight or on tether. We would like to thank all our sponsors and donors who will be listed in the next Cloudbouncer. But we would especially like to thank the AAA-IBM, Rainbow Ryders, and Aerco for their above and beyond contributions to the camp. We would also like to thank all the staff, pilots and crew who gave their time and effort. Vice President Neida Courtney Bueno will be our presenter this month reviewing the Albuquerque Balloon Camp, which was just held last week. Neida Courtney will be at the meeting to present this year’s Balloon Fiesta Quilt. NM Quilters will also be there with releases for your balloon. Raffle tickets will be sold in the Museum, not in the meeting area. Thank you to the Balloon Fiesta field crew for finding AAAA a smaller shed in the same location. Another huge thank you to fellow board members for coming and helping sort and move into the new shed. Next month we will have a safety corner discussion with Beth Wright-Smith regarding proper securing of your tanks in your trailer. Flying Events We were jam packed with fun stuff for our July event. We had 38 pilots checked in and 1 successfully threw a baggie. Congrats to Mo Chando for his first place throw! Some campers from the Rio Grande Balloon Camp flew off the south end of the field. Big thanks to all the pilots that flew or helped with the camp this year! The Zebras got some footage to use in their training videos for future zebras. C o mmitt ee R e p o r ts 1 3 Crew Development Crew development put together the tailgate cook off for the July flying event. Unfortunately no crews signed up to participate. We attribute this to multiple things happening during this flying event. If you or your crew would be interested in doing the cook off at a future flying event, send an email to [email protected]. If we have enough interest, we will revisit the idea of doing it this fall. Crew development is also hosting an introduction to balloons/ crewing seminar for the navigators on September 8th. This year will not be held during the flying event due to schedule conflicts. We could still use 3-4 balloons to help demonstrate their systems to participants. This will not be associated with a flight. Contact crew-dev@hotairballooning. org.

AAAA In a club the size of ours there are always several different groups of people. We tend to stay within our own group. Those that we grew up with or those that brought us into the sport of ballooning. What I am asking is that you branch out of your group. Get to know others in our ballooning community. Talk to other club members you don't know or have been afraid to approach. Talk to the museum and their volunteers. Talk to Fiesta and their volunteers. Talk the paid ride operators. Talk to the DPEs. Talk to our sponsors. Talk to Top Gun Competition. Talk to the FAA. Talk to BFA. Talk to Rally Balloon Meisters. Talk to our committee members. Talk to our AAAA Board members. Talk to Balloon Explorium. Talk to Chick's Fly members. Talk to CAP members. Talk to our Youth. Talk to ATC. Talk to any other group that I forgot to mention. All these different groups are a wealth of knowledge about their part of ballooning. You might just learn something new and even make some new and exciting lifelong friends.
