HISTORY

When the Calvinist Methodists left their 1828 premises in Chapel Square, now occupied by
Dovey Marine, they moved into new purpose-built premises in 1864 on Sea View Terrace,
which were much more ambitious than their 1828 chapel in Chapel Square, which was
somewhat overshadowed by the Wesleyan chapel that had been built in 1829. In its new
position it was sufficiently further up the hill to give it a dominant position.

Set back from the sea front, the new chapel was imposing, cut into the side of the hill with a
high revetment wall and was reached via a long flight of steps. The new building was much
bigger than their former chapel, accommodating a congregation of 650 worshippers. It was
on a level with St Peter’s Church, which, and one does have to wonder if the desire to put the
Tabernacle on a level with the church wasn’t a significant factor in the decision to locate the
chapel where it was, up a long flight of stairs that would have made it very difficult for some
members of the community to reach.

Instantly recognizable as a Nonconformist chapel, the 1864 Calvinist Methodist building is a
gable-entry type chapel with four bays, round-headed windows featuring radiating tracery,
and doorways topped with fanlights that echo the design of the windows. It was built from
stone and rendered, has a slate roof, and the steps that lead up to the entrance from the
seafront are also made of slate. The iron gates at the base of the steps with spearhead finials
were manufactured by the Coalbrookdale Company in Shropshire. There are two inscribed
tablets on the façade. The one beneath the gable reads Tabernacl Adeiladwyd
1864 (Tabernacle built 1864) and the lower one reads Tabernacl ir Methodistiadd Calfinaidd
yn y Flwyddyn 1828 (Calvinist Methodist Chapel established in the year 1828). Before its
conversion into flats the interior had a gallery with raked seating supported on cast-iron
columns. The organ chamber was preceded by a segmental arch flanked by fluted Corinthian
pilasters. The scale of investment involved was quite clearly considerable. The chapel was
renovated in 1910 following a religious revival in Wales, which included the addition of
heating, ventilators in the roof and the addition of a pipe organ. The photograph below,
shows something of the interior, including the decorative features at the top of the wall above
the organ, the organ itself, the pews and the underside of the gallery at the left.

It closed as a chapel in 1988 but the exterior of the building was preserved when it was
converted to flats. The building is Grade 2 listed.

PARKING
There is a parking permit left in the apartment, which allows parking for one car on the main car park. If
you could ensure that on your departure it is left in the apartment, as we will be charged £20 for a
replacement copy.
From 30th September to 1st April, there is free parking on the road, but places are limited. From 1st April, the
parking in this area is then limited to free for 45 minutes.
On arrival you can park at the bottom of the ramp (to the left of the steps, this is easier to use when carrying
your bags) to unload without causing any obstructions, wardens don’t mind for about 20 minutes or so. Once
unloaded, then you can find a parking spot. The main car park is a 5 minute walk.

GENERAL RUBBISH AND RECYCLING
It would be appreciated if you could put your general rubbish in the green bins located at the bottom of the
ramp. This is communal, so please fill the bins closer to the road first. Wherever possible, please use the
recycling boxes located in the same area.

BED LINEN AND TOWELS ON DEPARTURE
Upon departure it would be very much appreciated if you could put all of the used bed linen and towels into
the black bags provided, in order to try and prevent any cross contamination of Covid for our cleaners.

RESTAURANTS

These are just a small selection of eateries available, that we can personally recommend.

We do strongly recommend booking prior, especially at busy holiday periods, as some of the more
popular restaurants take bookings weeks in advance:

Coast Deli & Dining 01654 767470
Seebreeze 01654 767449
Dovey Inn 01654 767332
Coast to Go (Pizzas) 01654 767280

A little further afield, but well worth a visit: 01654 711949
Salt Marsh Kitchen, Tywyn 01341 421001
Cross Foxes, Brithdir, Dolgellau

FOOD SHOPS

There are only 2 food stores in the village, which carry a basic range of stock, but be aware they both shut at
6pm (check times in the Summer). They are Aberdyfi Village Stores (100yds from the apartment) or
Aberdyfi Post Office (3/4 mile away by the Golf Club).

So you need to be a little organised with your provisions, as the next nearest stops would be the Co-op or
Spar in Tywyn (10 minutes drive), or Co-op in Machynlleth (30 minutes drive).

CINEMA

On a rainy day, a must visit is the nostalgic “Magic Lantern” Tywyn Cinema, Corbett Square, Tywyn, LL36
9DF. Built in 1893, and still with all it’s original features, quite an experience. Take a look at
www.tywyncinema.co.uk to see what’s going on.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS

The nearest charging point is approx. 8 minutes away at Talyllyn Railway, Tywyn, LL36 9EY. (Supposed to
have the best breakfast in the area, so you can have a bite to eat whilst waiting to re-charge).

There are other points available but they are all a little further away, you can view these at zap-map.com

PLACES YOU MUST VISIT

Our family have been visiting this neck of the woods for over 50 years, and have found many hidden gems
along the way. We’ve actually themed our bedrooms and named them after a few of our favourite places to
visit:

DOLGOCH FALLS – LL36 9UW

Tucked away in a forgotten corner of Snowdonia National Park, a visit to Dolgoch Falls will make you feel
like you’ve stumbled out of Wales and into a tropical rainforest. There are two main waterfalls at Dolgoch,
connected by an easy to navigate path, with dozens of smaller waterfalls demanding your attention along the
way. The two larger falls could easily be something out of a fairy tale – they are simply breathtaking. The
path is wide, flat and accessible up to the first falls, before becoming steeper and uneven for those wishing
to continue on to the rest of the waterfalls. Dolgoch is also connected to lots of local footpaths, so there are
plenty of opportunities to veer away from the main path to explore further afield, for people who want to
challenge themselves with a more strenuous walk. It can get busy at peak times but if you visit out of season
or early in the morning, you’ll likely find it to be extremely quiet. It’s also a great choice for a rainy day
walk as the trees in the gorge will keep the worst of the rain off you, and if you choose to do the shorter
walk around the falls you’ll be close enough to retreat to the café if the rain does get too heavy. You can also
get there via the Talyllyn Railway, which is a treat in itself.

BIRD ROCK (CRAIG YR ADERYN – LL36 9TN

This has to be one of the most magnificent walks in the area. Although it has one of the most imposing
North faces in Wales, which is ideal for climbers, (you can go our way and walk up the rear which is
relatively easy). You might want to drive on to the 13th century ruins of Castell y Bere if you have energy
left afterwards.

As well as a destination for some of the most fabulous views in the area, it is also well known as the nesting
site of cormorants (the furthest inland nesting ground for cormorants in Wales) and red-billed choughs (the
latter on the endangered list). It is also houses a two-phase Iron Age hillfort. The hill used to be inhabited
by feral goats, which were introduced in the 1960s, but slowly died out. In the more recent past the hill has
been used as a quarry for road stone, but this has now been stopped. Today it is protected as a Site of
Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. As the birds nest on the north face, they are
undisturbed by walkers, and climbers are only allowed to scale that face outside the nesting season.

CADAIR IDRIS

Our family favourite, or our Dad told us it was, having to walk it every holiday as kids!! Cadair Idris (Idris's
Chair) stands at the very south of the Snowdonia National Park, it is the 2nd highest outside of the main
Snowdonia Mountain Range, it looks and feels a lot bigger than that of the peaks further north.
Cadair Idris, like Snowdon, is a classic horseshoe with Llyn Cau in the centre of the mountain, and Llyn-y-
Gadair to the north.
There are 4 main walking routes up the mountain, from the south, The Minfordd and Mynydd moel Paths
and from the North the Pony and Foxes Paths, the Pony Path being the easiest way up, and from the South a
walk up the Minfordd Path and down the Mynydd Moel path offers the Walker a more strenuous day, but
well rewarded with the stunning views of Craig Cwm Amarch and the Llyn Cau,alow around 4-5 hrs for this
circuit.

In the event that it’s a rainy day and you just want to
chill, please enjoy our selection of board games or books
located in the side board.
If it’s a sunny day, please enjoy the communal area at
the top of the impressive steps, with a tipple or two, and
take in the fantastic views of the estuary.

We hope you have a lovely time in Aberdovey, and Thank
You for staying with us.

Safe Trip onwards and hope to see you again!

ACTIVITIES

There cannot be too many hobbies and interests that aren't catered for in and around Aberdyfi. There are
many beautiful walks for the casual and enthusiastic rambler, cycle routes, both on and off-road and a whole
host of both wet and dry activities and pastimes that can be enjoyed.

Walking - From the village you can walk up into the hills and across to Pennal taking in some spectacular
views of the Dovey Valley and passing Carn March Arthur and the Bearded Lake on your way.
Alternatively, you could walk the old Roman Road, along the rocks and estuary as far as Picnic Island.

There are countless other walks in the area but some of the most popular are - the banks of the Dysynni, Bird
Rock, Talyllyn Lake, Dolgoch Falls, Cader Idris, Morfa Mawddach (pub at the end - my favourite!), Torrent
Walk, and Precipice Walk.

Cycling - Main roads can be a little busy during the summer months but at other times and also on the
smaller, quieter roads there are many routes ripe for exploring. The areas around Bryncrug, Bird Rock and
the Dysynni Valley are particularly enjoyable. Cycle hire is available from Llanegryn or Tywyn.

There are a number of off-road cycle routes such as the Morfa Mawddach (pub at the end - still my
favourite!) and the Forest Enterprise Visitor Centre at Coed-y-Brenin which has routes across the mountain
and through the forest..

Water Sports - Aberdyfi is an absolute paradise for water sports enthusiasts. The estuary is ideal for sailing,
canoeing, sailboarding paddle-boarding and water-skiing. The coastline up to Tywyn is popular with surfers
and kite-surfers. Throughout Cardigan Bay there are some lovely ports for those into yachting. Aberdovey
has good facilities for yachts with moorings and quayside berths.

Conscientious power boat, jet bike and jet ski owners are also welcome and there are launching facilities
available through the Harbour Master. The best swimming/sunbathing beaches run from the western tip of
Aberdovey up to Tywyn - 4 miles of sand-dune-lined golden shoreline!

Fishing - Sea fishing can be enjoyed from the shore or on a fishing boat trip. Catches can be quite varied but
mackerel, bream, pollock, skate and even sharks are quite common. The estuary is home to several types of
flatfish and also the famous Aberdovey bass - the fighters of the fish world.

There is a good choice of game fishing too, from river fishing for sea trout (the Welsh "sewin") and the
occasional salmon, to stocked lakes with brown and rainbow trout. There is also coarse fishing available at
Trawsfynydd.

There simply isn't room to cover everything, but rest assured within the area are facilities for pony trekking,
clay pigeon shooting, quad bike riding and of course, a good selection of golf courses. There are several
leisure centres within easy reach with the usual sports facilities and indoor swimming pools.

The area is a Mecca for artists and photographers with numerous galleries and painting scenes galore.
Wildlife enthusiasts are also well-catered for with RSPB reserves nearby and the varied natural habitat of the
area providing homes to many different species of creature, flora and fauna. Lying within the Snowdonia
National Park, the Dyfi Biosphere and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, there is always plenty to see.
