Celebrating Our Church Anniversary
“The Lord has done great things for us and we filled with joy.” Psalm 126:3

It is indeed a pleasure to congratulate the First AME Church Family on reaching 130 years of faithful and
dedicated Christian Service.

Since its inception in 1888, First African Methodist Episcopal Church has been a ray of hope and a
beacon of light within the Pasadena community. Throughout the years, the church’s physical location has
changed to meet the changing spiritual and social needs of the congregation and community, but we have
remained committed to the connectional mission of: Ministering to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and
emotional needs of all people by spreading Christ’s liberating gospel through word and deed. God has
truly blessed FAME Pasadena throughout its long history of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ,
crucified and risen for the sin of the world.

Our 130th Church Anniversary theme: “Reflecting our Faith, Rejoicing in God’s Favor, Reigniting our Hope
for the Future” exemplifies a significant milestone in our rich history to shout hallelujah praises for the
great things God hath done. Our paths have brought us through a myriad of experiences that have included
successes and failures. Along the way, we have witnessed many changes and challenges and have learned to
take them in stride. Our joy is to know that despite the road that we have traveled that there has been one
constant in life that has never changed; that is the love of God. It never changes. As Christians, we give
praise to God for bringing us through many dangers, toils and snares. We also give him praise for the
exciting life that He is giving us today and high praise for the glorious future that lies ahead of us.

Therefore, we pause to celebrate and renew our commitment to intentionally build healthy spiritual
relationships with our Heavenly Father (Upward), our Church Family (Inward), and our local
communities (Outward).

Melinda and I are humbled and honored to serve as your Ministerial Leadership Team. We are
overwhelmed by the sweet expressions of the Holy Spirit. The lyrics penned by Hymnologist, Doris
Ackers perfectly articulate our delightful atmosphere of praise, worship and fellowship:

“There's a sweet, sweet spirit in this place, And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord;
There are sweet expressions on each face, And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.”

It is through your obedience to the Heavenly Vision that God continues to richly reward us with
continued and sustained growth in membership, discipleship and stewardship. We thank God for each
and every appointed pastor, servant leader, and beloved member (past and present), for your love,
dedication and faithfulness exhibited over the years. With much praise, we thank God for His tremendous
favor upon the FAME Church Family.

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in
accord with Christ Jesus that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ.

Your Servant in His Service,

Larry E. Campbell

It has been said that to know the real content and character of a people one must know their history. The

130-year history of the people of First A.M.E. Church, Pasadena speaks volumes to their dedication to God
and the greater community. The many sacrifices made by the founding members and those who followed
began the good work that continues today in our God filled worship and service to the greater community.

We are blessed to share in the celebration of FAME, Pasadena’s 130th Anniversary. God’s divine guidance
and strength have empowered us all to achieve this milestone together. It is with deep gratitude that we
acknowledge the work of our Anniversary Committee, under the auspices of the Heritage Committee, and their
tireless efforts to bring about the wonderful celebratory activities that have taken place this year. May God
continue to bless First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Pasadena with grace, love and mercy as we
continue to work together in His vineyard.

To God be the Glory.

Kevin Whalum

Event Musician

Kevin Whalum was born in Memphis, TN and reared in the church his father pastored named, Olivet Baptist Church, where his

love of music was nurtured. Kevin then moved to Atlanta, GA to attend Morehouse College, “Morehouse is a place where a young Black
man is provided with irrefutable proof of the talents, gifts, and contributions of his ancestors, and of the same traits that reside inside
the young man, himself. I would not be who I am today without the standard of excellence Morehouse challenged me to maintain.” After
graduation, Kevin moved to Chicago, IL, where he formed a jazz-funk-soul group called, Kevin Whalum & Fast Forward, one of
Chicago’s most talked-about local bands. Later, Kevin married his beautiful wife, Camille, and moved to Nashville, TN to record and
travel with his famous brother, jazz legend Kirk Whalum. Kevin has recorded 7 albums with Kirk: Cache’, Into My Soul, Colors, The
Christmas Message, Joined At The Hip (collabo w/Bob James), Roundtrip, and Romance Language.
Kevin is best known working with Kirk on his gospel series entitled, Kirk Whalum, The Gospel According To Jazz, Chapters 1-4. Chapter
1 was released in 1998 to critical acclaim due to Kevin’s medley of two Negro spirituals, Wade In The Water/Motherless Child; when
performed on the Stellar Awards they received a standing ovation. “I knew I was in front of some gospel purists who believe gospel
should be one thing and one thing only, but I reject the notion that praise for the Almighty has anything to do with a certain group of
chords, or a certain rhythmic pattern. Gospel is defined as the good news, and as long as that is what fills my heart as I perform, that is
what will exude from me anywhere in the world including, churches or nightclubs. If you love Jesus as I do, you will feel me.” The
Chapter 2 release spawned the remake of Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s classic, I Wanna TaTa Ya, Baby which Kevin renamed, I Wanna
TaTa Ya, Jesus; rewriting the lyric of TaTa, Ya to mean Thank Ya. Chapter 3 is responsible for attracting R&B fans to the Whalum
brothers. For this live recording, Kevin chose a song by the late Luther Vandross called, Make Me a Believer and would be joined by
3-time Grammy winner, Lalah Hathaway. The song was nominated for a Stellar Award for best video in 2008. Again, Kevin rewrote the
original lyric to suit its new purpose, and the song was a hit finding massive critical and commercial success. Chapter 4 is the latest
installment in the series and promises to be as noteworthy as the previous three.
Kevin has 3 solo albums: the self-produced debut, Timetable (2002); the George Duke-produced, One Life To Love (2008); and the new
self-produced, I Live For You (2016). Kevin admits to defining himself as “primarily a jazz vocalist who just happens to be a Christian. I
hope I never agree to be just one thing. I have been-and will remain-free to explore the musical universe. There’s too much out here to
stay locked into one soundscape forever. Music is big, but Jesus is infinitely bigger. I want to touch his face with everything he puts in
my heart to do. I hope people find my new record, I Live For You, refreshing and groundbreaking.”
Kevin officially became a licensed Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ on November 15, 2015. He follows in the footsteps of his father
and two brothers, Kenneth and Kirk, by answering God’s call to the pulpit. “I am not ordained yet, only licensed to preach, but I feel that
pastoring is where I am headed. I feel that pull on my life. Music, however, will never be separate from my preaching. I was given this
gift to share, and share it I shall.”

First AME Church of Pasadena
Salutes Our Community Honorees

Woods -Valentine Mortuary:

James and Annie Mae Woods founded James Woods Funeral Parlor in 1928. Today

it’s one of the oldest African-American owned and operated businesses in Pasadena and
San Gabriel Valley. They saw a need for service in the African-American community and
“Jimmy”, as he was affectionately called, went to mortuary school. After he graduated,
a funeral home was erected at 87 So. Vernon Ave., in the area which is now called Old
Town Pasadena. Jimmy and Annie Mae Woods ran the business for over 20 years and
had the reputation of providing a professional, dignified and caring service. As the years
passed, Jimmy encouraged his nephews, Fred and Clifton Valentine, to learn more about the
business and consider it as a career. They both entered college and received degrees
in Mortuary Science. In 1950, Jimmy passed away after realizing his dream of having a
successful business. His nephew, Fred W. Valentine, continued to run the business for
his widow, Annie Mae. In 1954, she sold the business to Fred and his wife, Arzella J.
Valentine. They were committed to carrying on the family tradition of providing a professional, dignified and caring service,
as indicted by their motto: “Our Aim is to Be Worthy of Your Confidence.” In 1963, the Valentines relocated the business
to Northwest Pasadena at 1455 N. Fair Oaks Ave. A new edifice was built and Woods-Valentine Mortuary was the 1st
African-American business to receive an award from the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation for architectural design
and color coordination.

The family business is blessed to be in its 3rd generation with Fred and Arzella’s daughters, Janyce L. Valentine and Gail
Valentine Taylor, as co- owners. Arzella’s sister, Vannie Brown, Fred’s brothers, Clifton G. Valentine (expired) and James
Adkins (expired), Laven Lanier (expired), James Barker, Ernest Gomez (expired), Lenston Marrow, James Ross,
Leo Vaughn, Lawrence Henderson are other members of the “Woods-Valentine Mortuary family” who have greatly
contributed to the success of the business. The Valentine’s attribute their business success to God, a community that has
placed their confidence in them, and to a caring and hardworking staff. They humbly celebrated 75 years in business on
Sunday, December 14, 2003.

The Valentines are long-time members of Friendship Baptist Church, Pasadena where Fred was reared and baptized,
and where Fred and Arzella married in 1949. Fred and Arzella Valentine are lifetime members and past board members
of the NAACP, Urban League, Pasadena-Altadena Links, Los Angeles County Funeral Directors Assoc., National Funeral
Directors Assoc., CA Funeral Directors & Embalmers Assoc., CA Board of Funeral Directors, Pasadena Chamber of
Commerce and San Gabriel Valley Black Business
Assoc. For more than 40 years, Fred and Arzella sponsored
Northwest Pasadena Little League, Pasadena Ponies,
YWCA Girls Basketball and National Junior Basketball
Assoc. In 2002, Arzella wrote and self-published an
inspirational book, “Growing Up in Mt. Olive”. The Valentines
have made countless contributions to many national and
local organizations’ scholarship funds and to various church
projects and fundraisers throughout Pasadena.

This year on May 13, 2017, the beloved Fred W.
Valentine passed away at age 98. He will be remembered
as a prominent business man, community icon and family
man. Fred had a wonderful celebration of life at Friendship
where his family and staff pledged to see his awesome
legacy of a professional, dignified and caring service
live on. Arzella, his partner in marriage for 68 yrs., and in
business 53 yrs., is retired and consults with Janyce and Gail
for the continued success of the family business.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.:

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on the campus of Howard University in

Washington, DC in 1908. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter
organization established by African American college-trained women. To trace its
history is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th
century. The audacious group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of
a privileged position as college-trained women of color, just one generation removed
from slavery. As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes: the
importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability
and courage.

To date, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is comprised of over 265,000
college-trained women from around the world who represent a diverse constituency
of women. The local Pasadena Chapter of Eta Lambda Omega was chartered in
1960 by 32 Charter members. Under the current president, Ruthie Hopkins, ELO
has grown to over one hundred members serving the community in various ways.
Under its mantra, “Service to All Mankind”, a few of the Chapter’s programs include
the annual Health Summit, Backpack Giveaway, Diaper Drive, MLK Day of Service,
donations of food, coats and blankets to Union Station Homeless Shelter, Sister
Chat for high school girls, Young Authors for elementary school children, and the
annual Scholarship Workshop for high school students in the San Gabriel Valley.
At their annual Fashionetta® fundraiser, a Mother of the Year is crowned and
scholarships are presented to graduating high school students. For the past 57
years, over $150,000 in scholarships have been awarded in the 21st Century alone.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.:

Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate

women at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated is an organization of college educated women committed to the
constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary
focus on the Black community. Membership is open to any woman who meets the
requirements, regardless of religion, race, or nationality. Women may join through
undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through an alumnae chapter
after earning a college degree. With a sisterhood of more than 300,000
initiated members who are predominantly black college-educated women, the sorority currently has over 1000 collegiate
and alumnae chapters. The first public act of Delta Sigma Theta was participating in the Women’s Suffrage March in
Washington D.C., on March 3, 1913. Today, it is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization. Since it’s
founding, Delta Sigma Theta has created programming to improve political, education, and social and economic
conditions, particularly within black communities. In addition to establishing independent programming, the sorority
consistently collaborates with community organizations and corporations to further its programming goals.

The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust. More than ten
thousand members typically attend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s biennial national conventions, and each
of the seven regional conferences (held during years when there is no national convention) typically hosts thousands of
members. At its recent 51st National convention held in the District of Columbia, more than 38,000 members registered
and attended.

The organization celebrated its centennial
year by being the first black Greek-lettered
organization to participate in the
Tournament of Roses Parade in
Pasadena, CA on January 1, 2013 with a
float entitled “Transforming Communities
through Sisterhood and Service.”

Gamma Zeta Boulé Foundation,

Leadership, Achievement, Management,
Professionalism (LAMP)

The Gamma Zeta Boulé Foundation is committed to developing leadership potential in young men, while cultivating,

achieving, and sustaining the highest quality of life within the San Gabriel Valley community for students and their
families. Although Gamma Zeta Boulé Foundation has been providing scholarships for students since 1998, the
organization decided to launch a special mentoring program in 2009. The program specifically targets African-American
males, a statistically under-performing demographic in the Pasadena Unified School District educational system. One of
the main goals of the LAMP Mentor Program is to prepare students for college.

The Gamma Zeta Boule Foundation (GZBF) LAMP Mentor Program has been nationally recognized as an extremely
valuable and successful community social action program. The program promotes leadership, volunteerism, community
service, civic involvement and decision making skills. The program’s goal is to collaborate with professionals, community
leaders and educators in support of high school students committed to attending and graduating from the university or
college of their choice. The exposure allows the young men to interact with successful members of the community who
are willing to share management and leadership techniques and concepts. Recently, GZBF has increased its efforts in
preparing students for careers in the STEAM-
related fields. For the past two years, GZBF along
with the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., Sorority has
co-sponsored two very successful “Career
STEAMposiums” at Pasadena City College. This
event allows students from throughout the San
Gabriel Valley to interact with professionals in the
areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts
and Math to explore career goals in these important
fields.

During the month of June, graduating high school
seniors from the LAMP program are recognized for
their achievements with a scholarship award.
