Transferable Skills

have developed many skills from coursework, extracurricular activities and your total life experiences.

many occupations. A prospective employer expects you to be able to apply the skills you have learned
in college to the work environment.

Career Exploration
I remember when I was ten years old. I would watch criminal shows like First 48 and
Criminal Minds. I watched the shows every day! I found it so interesting that I knew in my heart
being a police officer would be perfect for me. I like taking risk. I like dealing with crazy people
but, only because I find the humor. I know it is a dangerous job, but I know I can do it. My “Do
What You Are” results were very accurate. I am a fair person. I pay attention to detail. I am
talkative, and I can make decisions quickly. Those are some good qualities a police officer needs.
When researching details on how to become a police officer and the requirements needed. I
learned that you don’t necessarily need a college degree but, it does help you have a better
chance at getting the job over someone who doesn’t have a college degree.
The police academy is where applicants receive the most important training that will
allow them to serve as police officers. Training can last six months be covering topics such as
search and seizure, criminal statutes, traffic laws, firearms training, driver training and physical
conditioning. Getting a high school diploma or GED is the minimum formal education
requirement for most police officers. Many law enforcement organizations may require or prefer
applicants with a bachelor’s degree, associate degree or a certain number of postsecondary
education credits. Most applicants will need to be a US citizen, have a valid driver’s license and
be at least 18 or 21 years old, depending on department policy. Applicants will also need a clean
criminal record, although some police departments may allow those with criminal records as

long as their offences were very minor. Felonies will disqualify someone from this profession. A
bachelor’s degree is usually needed for more advanced law enforcement positions, especially
those at the federal level, like the FBI or US Fish and Wildlife Service. Even if it’s not required,
police departments are increasing beginning to look favorably on applicants with college
degrees. Depending on the department, moving up the ranks depends on level of experience,
performance reviews, scoring well on a written promotion exam and obtaining additional skills
and training. Pay increases with a promotion, but so does the level of responsibility and potential
bureaucracy.

A day in the career as a police officer consists of twelve hour shifts usually. Driving an
assigned police car and monitoring the area a person is stationed. I may be asked to patrol a
certain area of the city and I would have to look out for any suspicious activity. Monitoring the
roads and people speed limit. My job is to catch any one breaking the law and either giving them
a warning, ticket, or taking a person to jail. I will have to do a lot of questioning and
investigating. Usually police officers who work during the day shift will be asked to come to
court and testify about a previous ticket I have issued. I will always have to look for stolen cars.
Find people with warrants and take them to jail. Most officers start off as patrol officers. Typical
day to day duties also include assisting in emergency scenes, responding to burglaries, and
monitoring the roadways and stopping cars that are driving erratically or speeding. For every
incident that occurs, a police officer is required to file a report. Doing paperwork is a major part
of the job, it is a necessary and frequent task. Additional benefits for this position include strong
medical coverage, paid sick time and vacation, tuition reimbursement for pursuing higher
education, a pension, and the opportunity to retire early. A police officer can retire after only 20
years of service, though their pension will then be reduced to 50 percent.

Last Name 3
Police officers must undergo rigorous testing and training in order to enter this
profession. Once I am hired on as a police officer, there is a great deal of room for specialization
and advancement. After going through an initial probationary period of about a year, Police
officers can begin to move up the ranks, starting with promotion to corporal, and then on to
sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. Police officers can also move into specialized positions such as
a training officer or investigator. I do not need a degree for this career, but I will get an associate
degree in criminal justice at Lone Star College.
