NARRATIVE TEXT ? What are Definition Purpose Teks naratif adalah suatu bentuk teks yang lisan atau tertulis yang menceritakan sebuah cerita dari satu karakter atau lebih yang mengahadapi situasi tertentu yang dibuat dengan tujuan untuk menghibur para pembaca. Jenis teks naratif seperti, legend, fable, fairy tale, folktale, short story, real-life drama, classic, fantasy, adventure, science, fiction, myth dan mistery. Teks naratif dapat berfungsi untuk menghibur dan sekaligus menumbuhkan penghargaan terhadap nilai-nilai luhur yang dijunjung tinggi oleh masyarakat di lingkungannya, seperti kepahlawanan, kesetiaan, kepatuhan dan hormat kepada orangtua, keterbukaan, kebenaran dan sebagainya. Teks naratif juga dapat memberi motivasi dan pelajaran Generic Structure Simple Past tense (Past Verb Form) contohnya: There lived a beautiful girl. or Past Continuous; while she was working, her stepmother came. Noun phrase contohnya: a huge giant. Time connectives dan conjunctions seperti: however, although, later, then. Adverbs and adverbial phrases menerangkan tempat dan waktu kejadian seperti once upon a time, long time ago, happly ever after. Action verbs (kata kerja aksi) menunjukkan satu aksi seperti: stood, explained, smashed. Saying and thinking verbs menunjukkan apa yang dirasakan/dipikirkan/ dikatakan si karakter seperti: told, realized, decided Orientation: memperkenalkan tokoh, tempat, waktu terjadinya cerita. Complication: memaparkan krisis/masalah yang terjadi terhadap tokoh utama. Resolution: krisis/masalah berakhir dengan baik atau dengan tidak baik bagi tokoh yang juga merupakan akhir cerita. Now, you have been familiar with narrative texts. Yet, there are many types of narrative text, the one that we will focus here is Fairy Tales Fairy Tale There are many types of narrative texts. Fairy tales are one of them. Fairy tales are stories with magical, supernatural, or make-believe aspects. The elements that may Inform whether a text is a fairy tale or not are the following points: 1. A fairy tale usually begins with specific lines such as "Once upon a time.." , long time a go and ends with ...happily ever after '. 2. The time setting of fairy tales are set in the past, and usually a long time ago as they are usually related to the local culture. 3. Fairy Tales have fantasy, supernatural, or make-believe aspects. 4. They usually have clearly defined good characters vs. evil characters. The good characters are the hero or heroine of the story. 5. Royalty/enchantment is usually present in a fairy tale, such as a beautiful princess/handsome prince, castle, etc. 6. Focus the plot on a problem or conflict that needs to be solved. There is a tendency for fairy tales to have three tries involving three objects, people or events before the main character/s solve ends. the problem and the story. 7. Involves magic elements, which may be a villain or magical people, animals, or objects. Magic may be positive or negative. (e.g:giants, elves, talking animals, witches, or fairies) 9 Fairy tales usually teach a life lesson, have an underlying theme, or demonstrate moral values important to a culture to which the story grow. 8. L ET'S SUM UP IT . . Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain or amuse the readers or listeners. It also can be based from real story but with additional seasoning to the story to make it more interesting. The purpose of narrative text is to entertain or amuse the readers or listeners and give the reader a lesson/moral value 1) Orientation The stage of orientation tells ‘who is who and where’. This is to say that the stage specifies who takes part in the story. The participants may be human or non human beings, such as animals and things. The stage also indicates the location, namely the place where the story takes place and the time when the story happens. In brief, orientation is an opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced. (2) Complication/crisis The stage of complication treats the crisis or climax in the story. This is the part of the story where something goes wrong and becomes a serious problem. The crisis is of great interest and suspense. This stage is where the problems in the story developed. (3) Resolution The resolution stage explains efforts taken to solve the problem. (4) Coda Coda is also optional in narrative text. The stage of coda closes the story by additional remarks. N EXT OF SUM U P Kind of NARRATIVE Sangkuriang/Malin Kundang/The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu Mousedeer and crocodile/A fox and a cat/The story of monkey and crocodile Cinderella/Snow White/Beauty and the Beast Common forms of narrative text which are studied in high school are: (1) Legend A legend is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history. Typically, a legend is a short, traditional and historicized narrative performed in a conversational mode. Some define legend as folktale. Example: (2) Fable Fable is a short allegorical narrative making a moral point, traditionally by means of animal characters who speak and act like human beings. Example: (3) Fairy tale Fairy tale is an English language term for a type of short narrative corresponding to the French phrase “conte de fee”. A fairy tale typically features such folkloric characters as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants or gnomes, and usually magic or enchantments. Example: Created by: Mrs. Yuki Yoas


LINGUISTIC FEATURES The use of Past Tense Use Noun Phrase such as long black hair, two red apples, etc Use Time connective and conjunction Adverb of time tell us when an action happened, and also for how long and how often. Use Adverbial Phrase Such as Once Upon a Time, Long time ago, Many years ago, Happy ever after... Action verbs in past tense: stayed, climbed, jumped, etc. Saying verbs indicating utterance such as said, told, promised, etc. Thinking verbs identifying the thought, perception or feeling of the characters in the story, such as thought, understood, felt, seemed, etc. Created by: Mrs. Yuki Yoas
