Defining Relative Clauses

คือ ขอความทีท่ าํ หนาที่คลา ยคาํ คณุ ศพั ท (Adjectives) เพอ่ื ไปขยายนามทอ่ี ยขู า งหนา
ใหไดใ จความสมบรู ณ และชัดเจนขึ้นวา เปน คนไหน สิ่งไหน ของใคร เปน ตน หากไมมี
Defining Relative Clauses มาขยาย นามทก่ี ลา วถงึ นน้ั กจ็ ะไมเ จาะจง จะเปน การกลา วขน้ึ มา
ลอย ๆ ซึ่งอาจจะทําใหผูฟงเขาใจไดไมกระจาง อาจจะตอ งซกั ถามตอ ไปอกี วา เปนใคร สิ่งไหน
หรือของใคร เชน

The man was killed. (ผชู ายถกู ฆา )

จากประโยคน้ี ผฟู ง จะไมท ราบเลยวา ผูชายคนไหนที่ถูกฆา แตถาเพิ่ม Defining
Relative Clause เขา ไปทห่ี ลงั the man จะทําใหค วามหมายชดั เจนยงิ่ ข้นึ เพราะทาํ ใหท ราบวา เปน
ผูชายคนไหน เชน

The man who went to the party with Mary last night was killed.
(ผูชายคนทไ่ี ปงานเลย้ี งกบั Mary เมอ่ื คนื น้ีถกู ฆา )

2. ไมมีเครื่องหมาย comma (,) คั่นระหวาง นามกบั Defining Relative Clauses
3. จะขน้ึ ตน ดว ยคาํ สรรพนาม ดังน้ันคําสรรพนามทข่ี ้ึนตน Defining Relative Clauses

จงึ เรยี กวา Relative Pronouns ซง่ึ จะตอ งสอดคลอ งกบั นามทข่ี ยาย เชน ถา Defining
Relative Clauses ขยายนามทเ่ี ปน คน Relative Pronouns กต็ อ งเปน คาํ ทใ่ี ชแ ทนคน ฯลฯ

1.1 ถา เปน คน ใหใช who หรอื that แตนิยมใช who มากกวา เชน
The man who is singing is Mr. White.
(ผูชาย คนทก่ี าํ ลงั รอ งเพลง คือ Mr. White)

(มาจาก The man is Mr. White. รวมกบั The man is singing.)
1.2 ถา เปน สตั วห รอื สง่ิ ของ ใหใช which หรอื that แตนิยมใช which

มากกวา เชน
The dog which is on the table is from America.
(สุนขั ตัวที่อยูบนโตะ มาจากอเมรกิ า)

(มาจาก The dog is from America. รวมกบั The dog is on the table.)

2.2 ถา เปน สตั วห รอื สง่ิ ของ ใหใช which หรอื that แตนิยมใช which
มากกวา เชน

I like the cat which Paul bought last week.
(ฉนั ชอบแมว ตัวที่ Paul ซอ้ื มาเมอ่ื สปั ดาหท แ่ี ลว )

(มาจาก I like the cat. รวมกบั Paul bought the cat last week.)
*** ถา Relative Pronoun ทาํ หนา ทเ่ี ปน กรรมของกรยิ าทต่ี ามมา (which เปน กรรมของ bought)
