Proudest That’s Ever Been Honoring These Bankers
Now we find this ancestral home a sacred, protected place
The memories that were made here still echo in this space
So, like the sands upon this shore, the descendants are countless and scattered
Across the country, around the globe, it really doesn’t matter
We may have never lived here, or even slept upon these sands
But somewhere in our DNA, the legacy demands
A yearning builds, that cannot be quenched, no matter where we’ve roamed
The descendants of Shackleford Banks settlers still desire to go back home

Talented, Faithful, Committed Core Sound Quilters
Our quilts tell a story, sometimes an old, old story …
Sometimes celebrating our traditions … and sometimes they tell
about where we are and what our community is experiencing.
Our 2018 and 2019 quilts did just that.
In 2018, this beautiful, colorful quilt highlighted the silhou-
ette of a trawler, a beloved icon of Core Sound traditions.
In 2019, the story has been that of recovery, with fabrics
ranging from the dark gloomy waters of the storm and the damage
it left behind, to the bright colors that represent the strength and
compassion of the people who have lived through the storm and its
aftermath.

Remembering Madge Guthrie
For those who have been p Back in the “old museum,” Wednesday was the day to be there! Mary Sue was always

and laughter to that old house. Their
knowledge of Island history stretch-
ing back to Shackleford Banks and
Cape Lookout, their stories, and their
passion for their community left a
high standard for all of us to follow.
Madge’s commitment to Core
Sound deepened as she helped bring
others to help. She served on the
Harkers Island Electric Membership (REA) Board of
Directors, and pushed others to support our efforts with
an economic development loan for the museum’s original
construction. That was a decision that Board would have
never made without Madge’s persistence, leadership, and
determination.
Madge was a keeper and writer of stories, and her
work is forever ours in the pages of “The Mailboat” and
other places. Her mother, Miss Pearl, was the last teacher
on Cape Lookout, and she instilled in her a deep love for
reading and a strong commitment to “writing it down,”
and for that we are forever grateful. Her contributions to
the Island are significant, and for those of us who knew
her, she will be forever a part of our Island’s history.

That was Madge Remembering
Island Girl
She played along the shore, an island quiet with just the sounds of workboats and gulls, clothes on a line frapping in the
sou’wester, the days of mailboats and netspreads …
Learning the old ways, our Island ways; steeped in the values of church and family, hard work, roots deeply planted in this salty
soil; a childhood of Christmases filled with wishes from a catalog, but gifts made by hand, an apple and an orange, a coloring book and
crayons, all filled with love, brightened by a starry night long ago …
Yet, she moved on with the next generation, bold and determined, embracing new ways in different places, venturing into an
unknown world in her own way to work, travel, meet new people, explore new places, but still holding on to home in her heart and soul.
Island Woman
She was a loving mother and grandmother, raising a family, suffering heavy losses along the way; a committed caretaker, a dedi-
cated daughter to her teacher-mother, and a giver to the people and places she believed in …
She was the writer and keeper of our stories with deep meaning and strong roots, a treasured thread to the past, capturing mo-
ments of everyday life that would have been forgotten if not for her; forever part of our shared foundation, our Island strength …
Leaving a legacy of connections and caring, holding on and letting go; seeing the beauty in all of us, encouraging us, laughing
with us, praying for us.

She was at peace in the wind, sitting on the sand beneath her
beloved oaks of Red Hill, looking offshore, listening and remember-
ing those happiest of days along the shores of Shackleford, tending
to that sacred ground, holding onto memories remaining only in the
blood …
Over her long years she grew in her understanding of life’s
heartaches and joys, realizing every day how blessed she was, how
much she was loved, and surely knowing in her heart, how deeply she
will be missed.

Remembering Guy Tucker
p Guy Tucker, the ultimate “Southern Gentleman” Guy Tucker … speak those words anywhere in Carteret County and
54 you see the smiles, hear the laughter, feel the friendship. Guy Tucker …
think about it.
My first encounter with Guy Tucker was now almost 30 years ago … back
when the museum was just a dream and men like Mr. Homer Fulcher and Julian Ham-
ilton and Norman Hancock and Curt Salter and Roy Willis and many others would
gather once a month to talk about old hunting trips and show-off their decoys while
a growing number of would-be carvers and collectors came to listen, wanting to learn
more. Guy came to visit, talk, listen, talk some more. He learned too ... but mostly
about people and their stories. The friendships he made there lasted him his whole life
through.
From all this, thoughts of a “show” on Harkers Island began to circulate and
the numbers began to grow. Guy was there encouraging others, often bringing in new
folks, giving … making friends and adding way more to this effort that we could count.
Guy wanted to be part of “something good” for Down East – and he did. It was hunt-
ing that brought him to Carteret County in the first place many years before he moved
here to stay, so just imagine all this -- a farmer from CHERAW South Carolina there in
the midst of room full of true Coresounders … It was “the best of times …”
Now looking back, it was a privilege and an education just to watch these
friendships grow along with the plans that eventually became the museum. Guy was
there from the beginning as a faithful giving board member – and he holds a lifetime
seat on that board to this day. His commitment never, ever, waivered; and neither did
the friendships that evolved over the long years it took to build this place. His respect
for Billy Smith was deep and he, like all the others in Carteret County, believed in Billy
to make this museum happen.
And Guy truly believed is us and the shared vision. Guy called me the day
that the first memberships to the museum would be announced that night – August
the 20th, 1992 – and told me to sign him up – he wanted to be the first. He brought
a check for $500 that night. His license tag still reads CS0001 … Guy made sure he
would always be #1 ... and he always will be. Mr. Homer Fulcher was #2. I have the
paperwork to prove it. Oh my, what a journey this has been for all of us.
A Friend to All Remembering
There’s never been a friendship any greater that Guy and David Lawrence’s. During all his Guy and his good friend, David Lawrence, p
years of sickness, Guy was helping with things seen and not seen. Gas for the cars to take David to a friendship that lasted for decades.
Chapel Hill … a light bill … a car repair ... Guy gave quietly and out of sight. For him giving was
what mattered. Guy loved David, and David loved Guy, and I believe if Guy could have given David p Guy and founding Museum Board Chairman Billy
his own liver he would have. I watched Guy cry the day David died. Smith, two businessmen and friends who helped lay
a strong foundation for the Museum’s future.

first person I went to when I heard about Purcell’s passing. We talked about him even up until a few
weeks ago. I just cannot explain to those of you who did not know Guy on the inside – and how he 55
was ... Guy Tucker was of Billy Smith, Purcell Jones, David Lawrence character and stature, and to
those of us who have had the privilege to know these men, you understand ...
No matter what -- Guy gave ... Holidays were his signal to pull out the Whitman’s Samplers.
He’d come w/ a car full, spreading them around Down East to all the women he knew, many of them
women who probably had never had a box of candy all their own before. He gave fruitcakes and pock-
etknives – and whatever he could roundup - to all of us at Christmas and for any family who needed
more, he gave more. Guy was Santa to more families than we’ll ever know … Wherever, whenever,
however the need was, Guy was there to help – without notice or applause -- with the joy of knowing
he had made a difference -- that made his Christmas.
And what a difference he has made in all of us – all year round. Of all the wonderful things
Guy owned, I want most to see his “little black book” of birthdays. He never missed anyone ... ever! I
– like many of you – have a stack of birthday wishes, all on yellow legal paper, with a note … “You are
special.” Guy was the special one for sure …
Guy TUCKER thank you … for all you gave to all of us. For all the kindnesses all along the
way to everyone you met … the laughter, that sneaky smile, the constant friend you were to so many.
Thank you Guy Tucker for reminding us of a generation of men and women who were steadfast, hon-
est, devoted and caring … For friendships deep … For memories of happy days with you …
Rest easy Guy Tucker … You will never – ever – be forgotten. Your light of love and caring will
shine in us, calling us to give as you gave to us, teaching us the value of caring, compassion and friend-
ship … Thank you Guy Tucker for being who you will always be in our hearts. We will miss you so ….

Don Walston was there when the Museum’s original founding board chairman died

kept us moving forward toward building this Museum for Eastern Carteret County.
Don was there for the groundbreaking that cold, rainy January day in 1999. He
was there during the hard decisions and years of fund-raising to get this building “out of the

he shared and worked for. Thank you, Don Walston.

Members 2019 Members ~ Our Family
Our members, aka family, are what makes the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center possible. And that has been
a fundamental truth from the beginning. Our first year’s 1000 member mark proved to funders, partners and US that Core Sound’s
revival of heritage and community spirit was indeed real. The accomplishments that are so visible today are proof that the community
commitment has continued to grow and strengthen over the past 25 years.

Congratulations,
William Chadwick,
on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in October 2018.
You make your family proud, continue to do good things.
The Scout Law
On my honor
I will do my best
to do my duty to God
and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
to help other people
at all times;
to keep myself
physically strong,
mentally awake,
and morally straight.
William’s Eagle Scout project consisted of
benches and picnic tables at the
Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center,
he could not think of a better place to do his project.
