How many Thai people back in 1946 would have believed that bottled water one
day be big business? Thailand was still a clean, green country where people collected
rainwater for drinking, boiling it if they wanted to be more cautious. The onset of
industrialization and economic development following World War II, however, brought
about concerns over pollution, hygiene, reliable packaging as well as a new emphasis on
convenience.

In 1958, North Star Co, a joint venture between Thailand-based Daradon Co.am
its US counterpart, grabbed the opportunity and introduced bottled water for drinking
to Thai market under the Polaris brand. Polaris encouraged more awareness among Thais
the dangers of polluted rain or well water, and was therefore a popular product. The
bottled water industry has been thriving in Thailand ever since, seeing rapid growth in
the 1990 due mainly to the expansion of leisure and tourism. In its first 30 year, Polaris
dominated the market. The Polaris trademark became a household name, as popular as
brands such as Fab washing powder and Kotex sanitary products.

North Star was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1990. However, the
proliferation of new competitors, notably Boon Rawd Brewery Co, forced the company
into difficulties. North Star was delisted later on following a bankruptcy suit in
