INQUIRY GROUPS
13th – A Documentary Screening and Discussion Facilitated by Kelly Halcom, Social Worker at Wiley and Chasity Beckless, HR/PD Coordinator
13th is a documentary, by Ava DuVernay, award-winning director of the movie Selma. The 13th
amendment of the Constitution made slavery and “involuntary servitude” illegal, except in cases
when a crime has been committed, a loophole that is central to the film’s message. DuVernay uses
interviews and historical footage to show the evolution of the criminalization of African-Americans,
by exploring the 13th amendment loophole, considering the media’s portrayal of people of color,
and critiquing the current state of mass incarceration in the United States. After the screening, a
discussion will be facilitated to explore our own emotional reactions to the film’s content, as well as
how the film’s content informs our roles as educators and our district’s work related to racial equity.
A light breakfast will be provided.
Important Note: This film contains language which some may find offensive, brief nudity, graphic
images of racial violence, as well as a clip from a movie that contains sexual violence. The images in
this film are not re-created, but are rather from actual footage, which may be very triggering and
upsetting. Please keep this information in mind when choosing this PD opportunity.

your foot into those shoes that are just a bit too small; too much pressure, very limiting, and just not
enough room to breathe. In this session K-5 teachers will spend time exploring how to get the most
bang for your buck by integrating required curriculum, technology and design thinking, and hands-
on projects to prepare students for the 21st Century. Walk away with a unit framework and
