PARADOX

BY NISHI

a small phrase said in the start has a great
meaning at the end. The person whom the
paradox is on ,might experience it and then
realize the total different meaning of it.

example: by Romeo and Jutiet:

Jutiet-‘My only love sprung from my only
hate!

Too early seen unknown, and known
too late!

That I must love a loathèd enemy.’

TRAGEDY

BY YOURS TRULY; NISHI

an event causing great suffering,
destruction, and distress, such as a serious

accident, crime, or natural catastrophe.

example:The hunger games:
people did not at all think that katniss’s
little sister will get selected for the hunger

games. That is a tragedy. An another
tragedy was seen when katniss volunteered
to participate for the hunger games instead

of her sister.

SOLILOQUY

a speech given by a character in a play when the
speaker is alone

Presented to inform the audience of what is
happening in the mind of a character .

example:hamlet mouses on life n death

To be, or not to be? That is the question-
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And, by opposing, end them? To die, to sleep-i dont

know what to do!

NEMESIS

Refers to a poetic justice* where good
characters are rewarded for their good things
and bad characters are punished for their bad

things.

example: from spiderman
At the end Green Goblin gets defeated, and
spiderman gets rewarded by the respect he

gets from the public.

iMAGERY

use of figurative language to
represent objects, actions and
ideas in such a way that it appeals

to our physical senses.

example: yuvi made
It was dark and dim in the forest. – The
words “dark” and “dim” are visual images.

FORESHADOW

Is when the author gives a hint as
to what is going to occur in the

drama later.

example: romeo and jutiet
“Life were better ended by their hate,
Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love”

DRAMATIC IRONY

Is an important device used in
drama. The audience knows
something which the character/s
is/are blind to. Thus creating

humour and suspense.

example:romeo and juliet
“There’s no art

To find the mind’s construction in the face:
He was a gentleman on whom I built
An absolute trust.”

ASIDE

a character speaking to the audience. By
convention the audience is to realize that
the character's speech is unheard by the

other characters on stage.

example; romeo n juliet

‘Time thou anticipatest my dread exploits.
The flighty purpose never is o’ertook

Unless the deed go with it. From this moment
The very firstlings of my heart shall be
The firstlings of my hand.’

tragic hero

the protagonist of a particular
drama who makes a wrong

decision which unavoidably leads
to his or her decline in the drama.

example: titanic
Jack in the movie Titanic was in love in with

a woman named Rose, who was already
engaged to person for financial reasons.
While the ship was drowning she had the
chance to be safe but jumps back on board
for her true love. Jack helps her survive but

he dies at last

Hamartia

Hamartia is a personal error in a
main character's personality

that brings about his or her loss
of wealth, power,

reputation/something that ruins
something in a terrible event

example: romeo jutiet
Hamlet’s tragic flaw in Shakespeare’s play
“Hamlet” determines his tragic downfall.
Hamlet’s hamartia is his indecisiveness. He

cannot make up his mind about the
dilemmas he confronts. He reveals his state

of mind in the following lines from Act 3
