Message from General Secretary Greetings of Durga Puja! We welcome you all to the 35th year of celebration. Prepare to be enchanted by the vibrant festivities and the spiritual aura as we come together to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Purbapalli boasts to be one of the oldest Bengali associations in Gurgaon. Founded in 1989, by a group of earnest, intellectual people Purbapalli were their dream and passion. With each progressive year, it assumed its own character, embracing the myriad number of members and their cultural and social diversities with love and dignity. We are growing strength to strength every year and it is gratifying to see so many members getting involved in this celebration that this joyous season brings with a sense of community and friendship. Today Purbapalli is not just another Bengali association rather is an identity by itself. Cultural programs have consistently been a unique element of our Puja wherein excellent performances are exhibited by our members year on year. We expect memorable performances by our members again during the remarkable evenings starting from MahaPanchami Thursday October 19, 2023. Special external programs from both Kolkata and Mumbai are also lined up in the evenings. Kindly extend your wholehearted support to make these evenings memorable. We have won the most coveted Sharod Utsav Samman Jury Special Award in All India category and prestigious Narayani Namastute Best Idol award in Delhi NCR in the year 2022. Our idol and traditional manner of conducting puja, an effort to preserve our legacy and culture, have been the pinnacle of our achievements. I congratulate you all for making this possible. The members behind the scenes, brainstorm on problems, put enormous efforts to keep the show running. With dedication and energy, they invest their precious time way before the Puja commences and carry on after the arc lights are switched off, tying up all the loose ends. A Big Thanks to all our Committee Convenors, members, and their family members for their seamless effort from planning to flawless execution. The level of energy, enthusiasm, and passion to excel in all our members, makes us the best. Their devotion, commitment to the community is unparalleled and without this support such a large-scale event would not be possible. Your generosity will further enable us to achieve the commonly shared aspiration. We express our heartiest thanks to our Seniors for their valuable guidance. We convey our special thanks to our sponsors and advertisers for their relentless support to make the event a Grand Success. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who visits our puja and makes it successful. Looking forward to similar support in years to come. I would like to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity to serve you and uphold the values of Purbapalli. I wish you all Happy Durga Puja. With best regards, Mihir Karmakar 5

Shri Chandan Bandyopadhyay 1963-2023 Shri Chandan Banerji as I remember. Shri Chandan Banerji was among the handful of enthusiasts who had mooted the idea of star ng a Durga Pujo in Sector 14 way back in 1989. Chandan was amongst the 21 members of Purbapalli during the first year. He was in the core team of Late Jadu Banerji, the then Secretary of Purbapalli. He convinced interested Bengali populace around for the purpose. Imagine in 1989 there were only few landlines, no mobile phone, no email, no messaging app, mobilizing diverse strangers from unknown background and convincing them for the purpose was not an easy task. In the absence of any SOP, unlike today, every ac vity was to evolve from scratch. Naturally, frequent mee ngs were needed. Frequent communica on and close coordina on were the order of the day. Shri Chandan Banerjee was one of the foot soldiers on a bi-cycle shu ling amongst members extended all support to the Secretary for accomplishing the coveted Goal. A young Chemical Engineer from a premier University, working for a reputed Engineering Consultant, Chandan had virtually no ego and would happily shoulder any responsibility big or small for successful execu on of the project. Most interes ng part of Chandan’s story was – a er all the hard work, he would quietly escape to his hometown, Kul during the Pujo days to spend me with his mother and others family members. Many would not even no ce that. This con nued for a decade ll he got married. We used to be surprised with his dedica on for Purbapalli. Many of us who joined Purbapalli subsequently may not even know his contribu on as he always preferred to stay away from limelight and never bothered for any publicity or recogni on. It was therefore not surprising that somebody, who broke the news of Chandan’s sad demise in PP group introduced him as Choyoni’s father. rd Incidentally Chandan’s birth day was 23 January 1963 if my informa on is correct. The day coincides with that of our tallest Na onal hero who preferred to stay away from the limelight and lived a secluded, austere life in disguise for nearly last 33 years, knowing fully well that he was adored and revered by his fellow countrymen as the “Patriot amongst Patriots”. The similar personality trait may be a ributed to iden cal birth sign, the scale and magnitude could vary. We have already lost some of our founders over the years, but Chandan’s passing away has been very un mely and sudden. His family s ll needed his support and guidance. We wish to place on record our deep condolences and wish the family to con nue maintain close link with Purbapalli in future also. Arabinda Roy A CONDOLENCE 9

Gurgaon Bangla Mela 2.0 - Shoubhik Sen After a gap of 2 years due to Covid, Bangla Mela returned to the Purbapalli calendar. It was held on 12th Feb '23 along with the Sushant Lok Durga Puja Committee. Having tasted tremendous success in the 1st edition, the 2nd edition was multiple times bigger. Other than that some of the notable features included an extension of the time to late in the evening with crowds swelling as the evening descended. The venue was changed to a much bigger and more centralized location. 11

There were more than 50 stalls with the best of Bengali cuisine, Handicrafts, textiles and books. The highlight were 10 artisans who came from the remote villages of Bengal. The venue was packed throughout the day. Performances were held throughout the day, showcasing Bengal in all its glory. The very best of Bengali brands were present - Biswa Bangla, Bijoli Grill, Senco and Anjali Jewellers, Protha etc. Overall, the response was truly beyond expectations. Everyone enjoyed. I am sure that Bangla Mela has become an important part of the social calendar of Bengalis in Gurgaon. Our fellowship and camaraderie with the cohosts were instrumental in organizing a very successful event which everyone enjoyed. Till Bangla Mela 3.0 then ...... with expectations of a bigger offering. 12

PP- JPC CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2022 Purbapalli Cricket Team It is said that Cricket is a Gentlemen’s Game. And in India, it is more than a religion. It is played in every nook and cranny of the country by young and old, men and women. A victory for India is celebrated with much aplomb and a defeat is mourned by the country, the cricketing champions are worshipped as Gods in the country. st It is with this zeal and enthusiasm, the Joint Puja Committee in Gurgaon organized its’ 1 Cricket Tournament on th a chilly winter Sunday, on the 11 of December 2022. As always, Purbapalli Durgabari Samiti decided to participate in it with much enthusiasm and vigour along with 7 other Puja Committee teams of Gurgaon. A team of 14 players were formed for this tournament to represent the Purbapalli cricket team, and these bunch of players practised sincerely and regularly for 3 months during weekends and after Office hours on week days. On the tournament day, the matches start early in the morning and continues till past midnight when the temperature drops drastically. A total of 5 matches were played by Purbapalli team on the same day (3 League matches, Semi-final and Final). The players had shown tremendous stamina, endurance and fitness level in giving their best under severe cold and foggy weather. All the commitment, effort, and hard work paid off as the team became the Runners-Up in the tournament, beating 3 other teams convincingly in the League games and Bangiya Parishad in a tightly contested Semi-Final match. It was only in the final, where Purbapalli suffered their only defeat against Sahasrabdi Durga Puja Committee (SDPC). However, SDPC was stripped off their Winner’s Trophy later as it was found they had resorted to unfair means by inducting non-members and external players in their team, which violated the basic Rules & Regulations of the Tournament set by JPC of playing with all members team only. The JPC organising committee had asked our team if Purbapalli wants the Winner’s Trophy, which was politely declined, and the team expressed that they are happy as proud Runners-up of the Tournament. Purbapalli emerged as the best team of the Tournament playing with honesty and integrity and displaying the values and spirit of Purbapalli on and off the field. The team not only won the matches on the field but also won the hearts and admiration of spectators and opponent teams. - Saptarshi Mondal 15

THE WINNING MOMENT With the Runners-Up Trophy Each and every player of the team played a critical role, and the triumph is a result of everyone’s collective efforts and commitment. Herbalism, with its deep connec on to nature, ancient wisdom, and commitment to overall well-being, is a philosophy that resonates with people worldwide. This ancient prac ce not only nurtures physical health but also fosters emo onal balance. As we explore the essence of herbalism, let us also delve into the concept of Durga Puja, a celebra on deeply intertwined with nature and spirituality. Durga Puja, a prominent Hindu fes val, honors Goddess Durga, the embodiment of divine feminine power. This fes val is a reflec on of the profound respect for nature and the recogni on of the interconnectedness of all living beings. The idol of Goddess Durga, cra ed from clay and adorned with natural materials, symbolizes our reverence for the Earth's beauty and resources. As we celebrate Durga Puja and the divine feminine energy that flows through all crea on, herbalism encourages us to connect with the healing power of plants, which are a manifesta on of nature's wisdom. This parallel reminds us of the importance of cherishing our planet and embracing sustainable prac ces. Herbalism, as a way of life, encourages us to seek ethically sourced herbs, mirroring the idea of respec ng the environment by using eco-friendly materials. This commitment to ethical sourcing in herbalism aligns with the preserva on of biodiversity and the delicate balance of ecosystems, much like the reverence for nature in Durga Puja. There is a transforma ve journey that expands our consciousness. Through Durga Puja, we honor our forebearers' wisdom and tap into a collec ve consciousness that transcends me. Similarly, herbalism invites us to learn from ancient tradi ons and connect with the meless knowledge of herbal remedies. Herbalism encourages self-educa on, self-awareness, and intui ve healing prac ces, much like the devo on and introspec on we go through during this fes ve me. Are we empowered individuals who take an ac ve role in their physical and spiritual well-being? Now, let's explore how herbalism seamlessly integrates into skincare and haircare. Just as Durga Puja celebrates the goddess's radiant beauty, herbalism offers gentle and effec ve solu ons for various beauty concerns. In skincare, herbs like neem and tulsi provide soothing and healing proper es akin to the calming energy experienced during Pujo. Aloe vera, with its hydra ng abili es, mirrors the rejuvena on and renewal associated with the fes val. Kumkumadi oil, rich in an oxidants, aligns with the desire for youthful and radiant skin. For haircare, herbal remedies like Amla, known as Indian gooseberry, promote hair strength and growth, reminiscent of the vitality celebrated during the fes val. Just as Durga Pujo encompasses various rituals, herbalism allows for the crea on of customized blends to address specific beauty needs, offering a personalized approach to well-being. Introducing "Tender, Love & Care for you (TLCforyou)," rooted in herbalism and natural wellness principles. Our brand embodies a profound commitment to nurturing your beauty and well-being, just as Durga Pujo nurtures our spiritual connec on to nature.
