School For Alternative Learning,
Darbhanga
9th semester, thesis project

Project Brief:

Type: Educational The term “alternative learning” covers all educational activ-

Block, Darbhanga District, Bihar. The idea behind the project was to design a school which
Site Area: 45 acres would facilitate a personalized approach towards students,
Accesibility: 136km from State Capital Patna, and which would have close links to the community, i.e.
--“a school for all”
47km from Darbhanga.
Earthquake Zone V The site for the school is at Darbhanga, Bihar. The traditional
Flood prone zone education system follows a generalized pattern disregarding
the local context and does not fully cater towards the needs
Relation of the site to the nearby villages of the children and the community. As a result, there is a
very high drop-out rate in Bihar (of around 16%). So, there
is a requirement of alternative approaches towards learning
which will form the basis of the school design.
The design also aims to integrate the school with the life of
the local community and therefore community spaces for
learning and the practice of local crafts and techniques have
been provided within the campus.
A crèche is also inluded within the campus. As agriculture is
one of the main occupations of the region, men and women
often go to work leaving their kids at home without proper
care. Often forcing elder siblings to stay at home to take
care of the child. Thus, a day-care facility for children below
school going age becomes a necessity.
