Mississippian, Maya,

Aztec and Inca
Civilizations

By:
LOGAN

Multiple-tier timelines use two or more rows of events. While each row
represents a different subject, the time period is the same.

Multiple-tier timelines can be used to help us look at cause and effect
relationships or patterns and themes among events in a specific period
of time.

We will be using a multi-tier timeline to show the rise and fall of four
early civilizations in the Americas: The Mississippian, Inca, Maya, and
Aztec and look for RELATIONSHIPS between the dates.

The

Mississippians

At the end of this unit,
you will insert at least
three images on this page
that you feel represent
the Mississippian people.

this is complete.

The Mississippians were an ancient tribe that we don't know much about. No
wonder they are so interesting to study! They had a neatly set up society in an
organization of classes. The commoners were the bottom class. They did all the
work. There were also elites, who had no job and got a bigger house and better
clothing. There were a lot more commoners than elites though! There was the
chief, also known as the sun, was believed to talk to the gods. Speaking of the
gods, the Mississippians had a powerful relationship with their gods. They made
GIANT TEMPLES just for the gods!!! They practiced religion every single day.
They held festivals for the gods as well. They soon realized that other tribes,
scattered across the U.S. grew other foods that they couldn't grow. They thought
about this and came up with a giant trade franchise that would help everyone.
These are only some great facts about this great historical, society

In addition to developing an organized society, demonstrating a
strong faith in their gods, and creating art and a system of trading, the
Mississippian people also were tremendously impacted by their relationship with
their environment. While Mississippian tribes lived throughout much of the great
United States we know and love today, they originated in central Georgia. This
area provided warm temperatures and a long growing season, which greatly
helped the Mississippians. This useful long growing season helped them grow
food such as corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins. The area where there were lots
of trees. They used the wood for building fences, walls, and many other useful
things to help their society. They soon figured out that they could use the wood to
build their temples. They also needed to have sheltered the families. So, They
figured out that they could also use the long grasses in the area to build roofs.
The final reason is that the Mississippians used their environment for survival by
hunting. A LOT of animals lived in the area and the Mississippians were able to
easily hunt for moose, deer, elk, and geese for food and clothing. Rivers and lakes
around the Mississippian settlements were a BIG help to the Mississippians
because this means that they could not only find drinking water but they soon
learned how to fish. Clearly, the location of the Mississippians people made their
lives much, much easier. The people had both had a purposeful relationship with
their environment.

Where in the World…
Were the Mississippian Located?

What is the approximate latitude
and longitude of the location you
colored?

What might the weather be like in
this location based on the latitude
and longitude?

What is the relative and approximate absolute location of the center of the South Appalachian
Mississippian culture? The relative location of the center of the south Appiliations mississippians
was around Atlanta, Georgia. This location is west of south carolina and East of Alabama. The
absolute location is approximately 33°N 84°W.

What might the climate be like in this location based on the latitude and longitude? It would be
warmer than most other parts of the united states. High levels of humidity make it feel hotter
than it actually reads.

How would this affect the way people live in this area? People may need more water. Clothing
may need to be lightweight, and they would need shelter from the sun.

The Mississippian
Social Structure

Chief: The Chief was sort of like
the boss in the mississippian
civilizations. When the Chief
died, he would pass his rulership
to his eldest son. The Chief gave
all of the orders, And was the
ruler of the mississippians.
Elites: If you were a mississippian, you would be lucky to
be an Elite. You would have NO JOB, a bigger house, and
more food

Commoners: The commoners were sort of the “Average”
people. They had jobs or made art. They had lesser food than
the Elites. Life of a commoner isn't lucky.

Settlements: The houses were in orderly rows around a central
plaza. They also had a big social area were they could play games.
They had a big temple in the middle for worshipping their religion.

The “Fort Ancient” tribe has a
personal relationship with their

spent years making a serpent
mound just for their gods. There
definitely needed to be some
personal relationships.

The Aztec

The Aztecs were an ancient tribe that lived in what we call Mexico city.
This tribe is very interesting to study. I'll tell you a bit about them.
The Aztecs were a bunch of tribes that banded together to form the triple
alliance. The tribes were very different. but, they had 1 thing in common,
the Nahuatl language. This was useful because they could communicate
easily. The Aztec tribe also had their own religion. They had gods that
ruled a different part of life. Like, Taloc was the god of rain and storms, and
Tonatiuh was the god of the sun. The Aztecs had agriculture too! They built
islands called chinampas witch had farm-rich soil. They grew crops on the
islands and brought It to their cities.

Besides the Aztecs history, their religion, and their agriculture, they
had some pretty interesting cities too. There were bustling cities, big
plazas, and a giant worship temple smack-dab in the middle of it all.
Speaking of social stuff, the Aztecs had a variety of different groups that
were important. The emporer ruled everyone, Then there were the
city-states, then there also were groups of families, Then, the families
themselves. The Aztecs also had an interest in art. One of their most
famous masterpeices is the "double headed serpent" witch is in a museum
in England. The Aztecs also made a highly decorated calender that was
pretty cool. This is just some of the info about the mighty Aztecs.

one next to my creation is the actual serpent.

Aztec art was very interesting. The double headed serpent (shown
above,) Was a very important piece of art to the aztecs.
